do a little research on the history of our tax rates....we've had it very good for quite some time....Reagan was smart to reduce the rates when he did...the problem was they should have slowly crept up every year but they didn't because that was political suicide....George Bush was right to raise taxes and they crucified him...if taxes had been raised over the years since 1986 this recession would not have hit as hard and there would be the ability to drop the top tax rates again like Reagan did to stabilize the economy

bah, everyone knows it's only democrats that raises taxes!!
    don't compete; coexist

what are you but my reflection? who am i to judge or strike you down?

"I will promise you this, that if we have not gotten our troops out by the time I am president, it is the first thing I will do. I will get our troops home. We will bring an end to this war. You can take that to the bank." - Barack Obama

I don't think it's wise to attack the small business owner - as it's the same as slitting your own economic throats. BTW - Bill Gates is a Billionaire. I don't see him living in a shack. Do you think he will be first in line to accept this Healthcare Plan? Why all of the anger? You got the President you wanted, with a Democratic Congress to boot. I'm the one whom should be angry.

I have a hard time believing that raising the income tax 5% on someone making $350,000 per year is "clobbering"

    It's a 5% raise, it's not just 5%. And that's $17,500...additional.

misleading....a 5% increase in the bracket doesn't mean 5% of your total income....it would be 5% of the taxable income in that particular bracket

when is enough, enough? people who make $350k a year already pay the MOST and now you want to tax them more.

what happens when 5% isn't enough to pay for this plan. should we just tack on another 5%? no no, maybe 15%. because thats what it will probably end up costing.

and its almost hilarious that some here think its selfish for OTHERS not to pay more in taxes. are those of you who want the rich to pay for everything going to donate more of your check to the IRS voluntarily? if not, why are you so selfish?

That's how are system works. Like it or not. Tax rates increase and decrease. I think Kennedy dropped the rate from 70% at one point. Taxes are a function of our economy...that's why the code is so involved because we require the tax system to encourage certain behavior. The rich need to be soaked because they're rich....that's just the way it is...and the way it's always been

I think it's selfish for rich people to think they are more deserving of health care than poor people.

    rich people don't think that.

are you going to donate a % of your paycheck to the IRS to help pay for this? if no, why not?

I think some of them do feel that way. And some middel-class people feel that way on behalf of the rich people (just in case they ever make it big).

Of course I'll help pay for this. I pay taxes too, ya know. And I would be happy to pay more taxes to provide healthcare to everyone.

so are you going to send more money to the IRS voluntarily if this bill gets passed?

Do they have a mechanism by which to receive my money and make sure it gets to the right place?

This bill doesn't represent the system for which I'm advocating anyway.

This emotional plea comes up barren when faced with the facts that today in the United States the wealthy are taxed less than most other industrialized countries, and less than even the United States itself historically since it became an economic power post WWII.

why should the wealthy be taxed as much as other nations? just because other nations do it, doesnt make them right and us wrong.

If that seemed like the most effective method by which I could support universal healthcare.

I support universal healthcare, but I think a single-payer system would work best.

Anyone in the 40% bracket most likey has investments, and the tax rates on ordinary dividends and long-term capital gains are way below 40%.

High net worth individuals who derive a great deal of income from their investments get very favorable tax treatment., and, they have many options to commit tax evasion, which is just as bad as welfare fraud.

    thats cool. I respect that

:o makes me cringe to think I'd have to 100% rely on the government for my healthcare. I want those who are less fortunate then me to have care, as well as children, and the elderly. ok ok, sorry, we've covered this ;)

lets close ALL the tax loopholes and deductions and flat tax everyone. 8-)

How's about we allow those loopholes, but make it so the alternative minimum tax kicks-in earlier!

You're an accountant, right? Or am I confusing you with someone else?
