Less than a week till Australia retains the Ashes.

I'm pumped, should be a good series, plenty of late nights coming up.

I think Aust will be too strong, only weakness is Hauritz.

Thoughts on the series?

not less than a week till we retain them, we need to win a few games before we do that... so it will be a few weeks till we retain them

Correct, by game 3 or 4 we should have them.

Should of been Krejza in the side. Can not believe how the selctors have just avoided him when he clearly has more wicket taking potential in his little finger than what Hauritz has in his whole body.

I thought with Aussies and Poms on this board, this thread would be a little more popular, but oh well...

Brett Lee out of the first test and possibly the 2nd with a side strain. Disappointing after his good bowling against the British Lions.

    Thank you for clarifying!
I don't know much about cricket but it sounds like this will be a big tournemant. I bet the guy that works at my sandwich shop that always has his computer pulled up to some cricket web site will be excited about this.

It's a test series (5 x 5-day tests) played between Australia and England. The biggest sporting contest that takes place regularly between the two countries.

Today was the first day of the first test so this game can go on until Sunday 8-)

The series is named after a satirical obituary published in an English newspaper, The Sporting Times, in 1882 after the match at The Oval in which Australia beat England on an English ground for the first time. The obituary stated that English cricket had died, and the body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia. The English media then dubbed the next English tour to Australia (1882–83) as the quest to regain The Ashes.

That is actually pretty cool. thanks for sharing.

I was pretty impressed with out pace bowlers. I'm not a massive fan of Hilfenhause but he did well. Hauritz is rubbish as always, but a good smart wicket against Pieterson.

Hopefully we can clean their tail up and Hughes and Katich will carve em up.

And Chime, you should feel honoured to be mistaken for an Aussie

1st test day 2 about to start so what do we expect??

I'd be happy with about 370 ... and if we could get a handful of wickets before the end of the day that would be a bonus 8-)

... as this is all going on while I'm at work I have to rely on www.guardian.co.uk over by over coverage so can't really comment too much

Don't mind Hilfenhause at all he can really make his mark now. He swings it both ways and if he takes a leaf out of Terry Alderman's book he could cement himself a place in the side for a while to come. Yeah Haurtiz...meh. Would of Krejza a go myself. Hughes has been such a run machine. Hope he keeps it up!

The Hilf has impressed me. Perfect conditions for him. I would of been all over Krejza. 13 wickets in 2 tests, man, he must of porked Ponting's Mrs not to be in that team.

THere best wicket takers so far have been Rudi and and Billy Doctrove. I can understand them getting the Hussey one wrong, but how could they fail to not pick up Flintoff's no ball and not refferring the Strauss 'Catch' up to the 3rd umpire.

But Clarke and Haddin have batted beautifully. Backs against the wall, hopefully they can put on 100 plus tonight and Johnson and Hauritz can do some good work for us. Money would still have to be with england at this stage.

Not with 209 runs to win, 5 wickets in hand and a whole day to play.It is either win or lose, Draw is not an option (unless the weather plays a part) Rudi and Billy have been good contributors for you in this innings, they're playing well :D

The last dismissal was extremely hard, he was unlucky to hit the floor with his bat at the EXACT same time the sound would have been for the edge.

a victory is entirely possible in this game
540 balls minumum, probably throw in an extra few overs due to the list time over the match
5 wickits in had, 2 batsmen playing well, and a very strong batting tail. if we play for a draw, we will lose, the only way is to play for a win, and if that happens, the series is over! the physocological blow if will give the english is massive!

Will be hard for clarke and Haddin to start again. But at least they will be fresh after hopefully a good night's sleep. But you would think that they would have to put a minimum 100 runs on together. Johnson is good, but you don't want to leave the tail with too much.

As for Haddin, if he scores a ton at the home of cricket, this will give him a lot of confidence and will even help his keeping, cause he has been a bit dodge this test.

    Come on Aussie....

Haddin will have to knuckle down if he gets his ton. If they last out until he gets a hundred that'll be the time they both might relax mentally. If one of them gets out early the other will have to be there for the rest of the innings. On the plus side there won't be in any rush to get the runs. Plenty of overs to do it in.
