Last three landed today of 18 variants from the RHCP store.  The US Clear is the same color as the Euro Clear - different pressing plants and bar codes.  Somewhere between love for RHCP and boredom intersect is where I found myself hunting these down.  All are open and will need to be cleaned before playing - surprised at how staticky and grimy there were upon opening.  I’ll be keeping them in their outer wrapper due to the hype stickers…sorry that annoys some people.  Inner sleeves take a beating shipping these all over.

Someone asked about the red variants.  The Target one is in the middle and is semitransparent, the dark burnt red hype sticker is the most transparent (left side), and the other red hype sticker is solid (right side).

:o That is something to behold. Is this the only release you have done this for or do you normally chase down different variants of releases? With this one having so many variants, it must have been a chore.

I bought a second copy of Vitalogy (I owned the reissue, but found a nice OG copy), when my wife saw it, she sort of side eyed me and told me that I already had a copy of it. After explaining the difference, she cut me a little slack. If she saw that stack you have, the eye roll from her would be deadly.   :D

Wow that 18 variants collection is impressive. I felt super guilty ordering the black deluxe (German press) yesterday as and upgrade to the Orange Canadian version I have. I’m just not happy with the level of surface noise even after a VPI vacuum clean and want to enjoy this one on the TT.

I think the new Chilis is getting overhyped some. Solid return but the weakest Frusciante album by a large margin and as typical with the Chili’s would benefit from a more selective track selection.

As an artistic statement and attempting to chase the muse, Gigaton slays UL. Strongest PJ album since Avocado to me.
For me Unlimited Love is a massive improvement over Stadium Arcadium. SA has so much filler throughout. Although by no means perfect, UL only has a couple of filler tracks in my opinion. And as for Gigaton, it’s my least favourite album by PJ. Still can’t get into it at all. And I’ve really tried.

I think all the Frusciante albums have filler. Problem with UL is that it has very few real standout tracks and a pretty predictable album overall. Say what you will about SA, but there’s easily more than an album of really great and varied songs.

I split the difference between you two

SA is by far their best album. UL isn’t quite there but I enjoy it a lot. More than Gigaton for sure

Yes. Really got me into them. Lost touch after that, picked up the new one b/c of all the hype. Didn't listen yet but liked the one song I heard on the radio.

I LOVE one hot minute. Always loved the second half of BtW. The first half is so good that it often gets overlooked.

Update on surface noise issues: Maybe I'm the only one here bothered by the quality of the pressing on the colored vinyl.  I had the Orange (made in Canada) version purchased at my local independent shop. In between tracks was an ungodly amount of surface noise, and even with a full VPI vacuum clean it wasn't any better. I decided to get the Deluxe version that's currently available on Amazon (Canada). I zoomed in on the picture of the listing and it clearly had the "made in Germany" logo.

Needle hits the lead-in to Black Summer and instantly I hear nothing but dead silence until the opening notes. I had intended to only listen to the first few tracks but it's Unlimited Love, and as it does, I was completely drawn in and sat through the whole thing.  Finally a worthy pressing of a beautifully recorded album and the best RHCP record in over a decade.

Consensus: If you're shopping for this record I would recommend anything made in Germany, and possibly stay away from the colored variants. It used to be a snobby collectors thing to say that colored vinyl didn't sound as good as black, but in this case at least it was proven true for me with a small sample of course.
