I don't really blame him at all. He was probably already in Hawaii and he gets to go pick up a few hundred grand for a short set to a small audience, then gets to hang out and stay at the Four Seasons in Lanai for free. Who wouldn't do that? I sure as hell would.
i agree
i still dont understand some ppl on here that still like to bitch...calling your favorite singer a sellout and acting like a teenager (no offense) and people ranting about 3.5 yrs for 36 minutes.....i'd rather have "ramones" and "doors" type 3 minute songs instead of drawn out, lengthy songs like Come Back and Parachutes (no offense) but that's just the way i feel and i didn't mean to put down your profession. Sorry for cursing. --my version of Seth from Superbad--

I was not very familiar with Oracle as a corporation, so i googled them to see if they are indeed an "evil" corporation.... It looks to me like they are active in the enviroment, food for women's shelters, and education... Similar charities the band is interested in... Not all corporations are evil... I hear a bunch about target too, how many millions have they raised and donoated to United Way?... I don't know, I think it is a very nice thing that Ed and the company did for their top performers; the company was not a greedy corporation in that they spent this money to reward their employees. And what a treat! I went to a similar gig for wells fargo in hawaii a few years ago. We had Sheryl Crow, but i wished it were Pearl Jam!
I'm just pissed that the years I made it we got Counting Crowes in the Bahamas, Elvis Costello in Vegas, and Roger Daltrey in Banff. The one year that they make it much more difficult to qualify, due to the recession and restricted budgets and all, they get Eddie freaking Vedder. It's like god slapped me in the face.
But, I stand by Oracle as a pretty respectable corporation. They do lots for the green technology movement, tons of women's and LGBT promotion in the workplace, very active Volunteer community, local clean up projects in the Bay Area quite often, etc... So, it's not like he is getting paid by some lumber company or some evil corporation that he has attacked in the past.
And the more I think about it, he probably had a blast. Real small, everyone is partying/celebrating on vacation, and in one of the most beautiful places on earth. Average age is probably mid 30's to mid 40's, so the folks there are really familiar with Ed and probably rocked out pretty hard with him. Must have been a killer party.

do they tell the "winners" ahead of time who is going to be there, or is it a secret until the show starts?

after seeing how crowds behave at PJ and EV shows and how every little thing is examined under a microscope by the fanbase, he's probably relieved to be at a show where everyone just has fun regardless of what he plays and how he plays it (or what color pants he's wearing).
the only sad thing is that exclusive shows used to be for fans/fanclub members. wish they would do more of those.

they don't let you know beforehand at all. There are usually some rumors circling though. My friend that was in Lanai said "rumor has it PJ is the entertainment" about an hour before Ed came on.
I finally got to talk to him, he said Liam joined him for a few songs, and the gal (cant remember her name from the solo shows I went to last year, Liza?) and that they were all just mingling with the crowd afterwards. He did say they played a temple of the dog song, some elvis covers, dylan, springstein, and half a dozen or so PJ songs. Said he played for over an hour and a half and then hung out for about 3 hours afterwards with some friends (Slater, Finn?) and then took off at about 1 AM with his family. My friend is not a huge music nut, so I cannot get to the bottom of those tracks. And it was so exclusive, I don't know anyone else that was there to ask.

that's awesome! our last sales meeting was in a drury fucking inn.
This show, another show, a show here and a show there.
Good reporting from WoodenHammer. Thank you. An Oracle sales rep rewards event played by Vedder for big money is an interesting and comical story.
It seems fair to give Vedder some good-natured ribbing for this appearance. Maybe an "Oracle" chant like the famous "Darryl" chant from the 1986 World Series. I mean, Eddie Vedder played an annual sales meeting at a hotel ballroom. Granted, it's a sales meeting for an accomplished company's best performers at an exclusive location, but nonetheless, it's a sales meeting. Did he lead an afternoon roundtable on building brand awareness? Or was it a morning coffee on on ways to make clients commit to a big buy?
I don't feel too strongly about the Oracle appeareance but it will always be part of this tour in my mind. I dished out a fair amount of cash on tickets and a poster in Albany. And I liked the show and poster but part of the reason I was willing to listen to Ed's stories and part of the reason I could forgive all the screw ups was because I have respect his work and public persona. This appearance cuts into that respect. It seems to have been part of the tour from the beginning. I mean, why isn't the Oracle event listed on my Albany poster? He didn't invite anyone onstage in Albany but I guess I ain't no V.P.'s son.
Again, WoodenHammer, good post. Almost seems like this is watchdog journalism aimed at Pearl Jam. In other words, if the band and Vedder want this sort-of public respect, they'll be held to a higher standard. Reminds me a bit of a politican taking a lobbyist's paid junket.
Also reminds me of that line in "Society." Just a low-key little message, "You can't do that."
Yes he did. He played my companies private party in Lanai. He hung out afterwards for a few hours and had drinks around the pool. The setlist was typical Ed solo list, but more covers - i dont have it exactly but was being texted throughout. I have a photo of him playing with one of my VP's sons.
This is 100% confirmed.
For a moment, I thought you were just being a jackass, but then I saw the picture.
Thanks EPOTTSIII!

well said.
live and let live...unless it violates the pearligious doctrine.
I work in the music industry and know that in these days in times you have to do whatever you can do to make a dollar. You don't simply make an album, tour and then make tons of money. The industry is a totally different animal now. With that said, the only problem I have with this is that for the past 15 years he's been bashing corporate America. Practice what you preach my friend.
Further back and forth a wave will break on me, today...
another thought.........if ed did a fanclub only show and charged $300 per ticket...........those of us that can afford it would be evil and everyone would be in a pissy about ticket prices.
i hope ed does more of these shows..........

does it really matter if it was part of the tour. Ever think oracle did this at last minute. Your points are very weird and out there.

Nice description of the event, but as the pic points out, money can buy you anything, including being upfront and center with EV at a private corporate party. :? :(

or working your fucking ass off. I bet none of would be complaining if ed did this for the company you worked for. So then shut the fuck up bout it.

I notice, metsfan, that you have a problem with anyone who has an opinion that differs from your own. Last time I checked, everyone does not have a right to YOUR opinion...they have a right to their own. Deal with it, and have a nice night.
I don't have a problem with anything really. But I do have with people like yourself jenwah always bashing the band for everything they do. Wow he played for a big evil corporation, he's such a fucking sell out. I work for 2 big corporations, I guess that makes me a sell out doesn't it then.
Ron: I just don't feel like going out tonight

Metsfan, yes, it matters that the Oracle event is almost part of the tour, whether planned or not. It's a paid performance of the same type at an exclusive corporate event. It has at least a small impact on how I view that poster, which I'll still frame and hang in my house.
I agree, some of my points could be shot down. That they seem weird and "out there" is probably better than if my points were dull and normal.
The Oracle appearnce does not make Vedder a sellout. You are not a sellout because you earn a paycheck from a corporation.
It's somewhat similar to Manny's recent steroid test. It's just a slight chip off Vedder's reputation in my mind. And I believe that, as a longtime fan, it's worth knowing and WoodenHammer's insight seems accurate and valuable.
And, Metsfan, what about the Darryl Strawberry mention?

that's fine it matters to you and I totally can respect that. darryl was his own worst enemy. I saw darryl once as a met when I was either 4 or 5. it was his final season here in ny

He gave a concert and got paid. Why is this considered bad by some people?!
Isn't that what he usually does? (Give a concert, and then get paid for it.)
Is it just the fact that it was a private concert?

no its the fact it was a big corporation. Thus it makes him a sell out

EV has been bashing Corporate America since the beginning of Pearl Jam, Justam. All of a sudden the man who stood up for what he believed in has done a 180. That's what this is about. Practice what you preach, as EV always used to do. Not anymore though.

Well, perhaps they are a less evil group than the executives of Haliburton?
