I agree. And this is nothing compared to what I've been reading on the guns and roses forums. With some of those guys you wouldn't even believe they liked gnr, and they're supposed to be "fans". I don't think 3.5 years is a long time to wait, considering GNR fans waited 15 years for chinese democracy! It gives us some perspective eh!

And let's not forget Golden State and Santa Cruz. That's at least 8 minutes of new music to add on there. So when Backspacer comes out, just burn yourself a new copy that includes those 2 songs and you're up to 45 minutes

Compare apples with apples though - Axl is a volatile person who makes decisions one day, and seems to change them the next. Pearl Jam have all their sanity it would seem. Not to mention that Guns 'n' Roses are no longer really GNR at all.

If it is thirty -six minutes , I'm more than happy. I used to love seeing The Ramones. 28 to 30 songs in one hour and fifteen minutes. I have a life . People to see and things to do. Or vice-versa. I can't spend all my time listening to music.

I am going to look at this from another point of view, Pearl Jam usually plays around 2.5 hours or so, so if the new album is only 36 minutes or what not, then that will still give them plenty of time to work in some of the older tunes.

Edit * and just to say what most of you have, can't wait for any new material however long or short it might be.

Actually sir, 36 minutes divides really easily into 3.5 years. that equates to 10 minutes per year plus one additional minute.

You should be thankful that PJ is giving us that extra one minute.

    this made me laugh!

i reserve judgement for when i actually get to LISTEN to the new album...all else....moot points up until then imo.

however, i thinl perhaps we have many, many members here who simply like to stir the pot, for the simple joy of stirring the pot. ;) and this place is just too easy at times for those so inclined to do so. shit-stirrers....

I didn't look at the tracklist because I wanna be surprised when I get the album in my hands.
But dude I've heard the tracks "Got Some", "The End", and "Somethings Going On/The Fixer"
And this album is gonna be damn good from what I can tell from these songs so just wait until you getta hear it.
I'd rather it be 36mins of great music then a buncha boring songs that they just threw on

Most of the time long lengthy albums bore one to death anyway. By the time song 12 comes arounds Im ready to shut it off and listen to something else. Riot Act and Self titled had way too many songs on it, Im hoping this is refreshing and a bit different.

Remember when almost all albums used to be about 40 minutes or so? Because you only had so much room on a LP.....

albums like Harvest and after the gold rush immediatly come to mind.

It will be cool. I rather have 11 strong songs that go together cohesively then 15 lackluster songs that don't flow.

I'm pretty excited it is a short album.

That's a good point. When vinyl ruled the world albums were far better constructed than they are now. You needed a strong opening track, something to close side 1, then grab our attention again with a side 2 opener. The 30 to 40 minute restriction was a good thing IMO.
Too many bands nowadays feel the need to fill up the whole 70-80 minutes on a CD. They may feel they are giving fans VFM, but 9 times out of 10 the album as a whole is weaker as a result, too many fillers.
Give me quality over quantity everyday, 36 minutes of PJ at their best will do me fine!

dude, they weren't making music for this album the whole 3 1/2 years. They were doing other stuff.

36 minutes ain't bad. This album will be tight!

Relax and stop bitching! If I were the band and read this, I'd be like fuck you, I'm not making jack for you next time. :P

If it is only 36 minutes, I will be disappointed. Their best song in years is Inside Job and its a long epic; we need more of those. I get a little tired of the short punky songs; somebody in the band tell Ed to quit it.

A-motherfucking-men. I've been saying this for ages and people round here act like I've been advocating kidnapping the band's family for ransom or something. It's ridiculous. The crappy little punk songs are lame and utterly forgettable. Their best songs are ALL longer epic tunes. Any concert you see, what's the show stopper? Alive, Immortality, Present Tense, In Hiding, etc. What is the last song anyone remembers? Oh yeah, they played Gods' Dice, Get Right, Big Wave, etc.

That said, I don't give a shit how long the album is. 36 minutes is fine with me, as long as the songs are good. What worries me is the indications that it will be an entire album of crappy 3 minute punk rockers. It could be 75 minutes and 25 songs and if they all sound like Comatose, it's going to suck. It could be 6 songs and 35 minutes and be one of their best if they get back to writing songs with drama and tension again, the let Ed belt out and Mike wail.

This doesn't rule out that we could still have a longer 5-8 minute track on "Backspacer".

Queens of the Stone Age's "Rated R" clocked in at barely 40 minutes (11 songs)
Most of the songs on the album range around 2:30 seconds however..."I Think I Lost My Headache" is like 8 minutes long and is fucking epic.

    That album was brilliant.

The Stooges "Fun House" is another short but awesome album

Do I even have to mention THE RAMONES????? C'MON!!!.

I'm glad you mention them, because that's exactly the kind of mediocre generic crap I'm getting bored of. Though I'd even be slightly happier if the band could write short punky tunes half as catchy as the Ramones.

And one longer song surrounded by 10 mediocre punk tunes doesn't make a good album. It makes a good single and concert staple and a bunch of filler.

(Rap, I'm especially looking in your direction. Not every album needs ten skits, you're not REQUIRED to fill up the entire 80 minutes with your answering machine messages and fake gun shots).

So true. Snoop is the worst... Doggystyle is 45 minutes all killer. Everything since... shit. Skits, 15 producers, 20 songs... rap needs to get its shit together.

36 minutes is great! i don't have to switch cassette tapes at work to hear the full album. one maxell 90 minute tape (45 mins per side) works well! i can record the album 2 times now on that cassette tape! 2 sides for the price of 1!
  • haha, you moan about the speculation of this album being 36 mins long and thats its not worth buying...

but i guarentee youll still buy it!

Pink Floyd Dark Side of the moon, just under 40 minutes. Led Zep albums around 42 minutes.

I'd rather not have stuff like Ghost filling the void between the Vinyl and CD media capacity.

It would be fun to take all the PJ albums and think in terms of the 1970's. Pick one album which gets to be a double album. Then, limit all others to 45 minutes of content. For each album, what songs would you leave in/out?

i'll be honest here.......i hope the album isn't 36 mins long.

Obviously i will have to listen first and get a feel for it......but if I read a review that said the album was 50 mins I would immediately feel a lot happier about it.

Leave all other assumptions at the door (quality over quantity crap, comparisons to other albums) and I am left thinking more PJ = better. As of right now I do not see any other facts out there, so this is what I am going off of.
