Ed's encore speech at San Diego, 6-5-03.

"You know, this is ridiculous and it's been on my mind all night. I thought this is ridiculous to talk about at a show or a concert, but I just have to talk about it. Are you willing to...

You know I find this one kind of artist, singer, something or other poet actress, whatever, fascinating. This person fascinating. And her name is Jewel. (laughs, cheers)

And for me I'm anticipating her next record so highly I can barely think of anything else. So when I mess up a lyric or I do...it's because I just can't wait for this new Jewel record to come out you see. It's an obsession.

But here's the great news I found out today. That before it even comes out her song, one of her, some...this song, can't wait to hear it. It's actually gonna be I'm not even gonna have to...it's gonna be part of a commercial for uh I think ladies' razors or some other feminine hygiene product (scattered boos)...

So I am just so excited because I don't even have to download anything...I can just watch TV and wait for the commercial. I'm so excited! Wow!

And it's not like ya know, it reminded me of this offer that we turned down. But the best one that we got was for Viagra. And it was a...they showed us these little story boards and it was a singing penis. A little singing cock singing I'M STILL ALIVE. It was really cool. (cheers)

Six Million dollars we turned down to prevent our song to prevent our song to be sung by a cock.

Alright, I'm gonna...if I can forget about Jewel and cocks and something for a second, I'd like to play a song... um and it's uh, I mentioned the Who before and it's a rarity. And uh, sing it for Pete who's my hero." (goes into Blue, Red, and Grey on ukulele)

So maybe Ed saw how well the memory of The Who did selling out with all their music in countless commercials... It all makes sense now!

Remember when Pearl Jam almost canceled a concert in 2000 because the venue had Dodge billboards on the stage? (or something like that)

Wow.

Remember the first time they played Letterman? It's cause it was a commercial free show. From then it turned into their regular talk show circuit, and all the performances have been awesome. Remember all Ed's on stage jokes and speeches about American Idol and Sheryl Crow etc?

I never called Pearl Jam a sell out. Ever. Not when they began using ticketmaster again in '98 (they had to), not when they signed with J Records for Avocado (really, who cares), not when they made videos, not when they played on SNL with Lindsay Lohan, not when they made everyone line up at Tower Records to try to get into a free show, not ever. All of those were logical, common, business and music moves from a band that wanted to let people they're out there.

But, I am afraid, this is Pearl Jam's first Sell Out move.

Perhaps just another Who tribute....

When you put a company's name next to your band's name, you officially have a sponsor. Rolling Stones and Sprint. The Police and Best Buy. Tons more I can't even think of.

Congratulations, Pearl Jam. The 2008 Verizon Tour. This was not done "By fan's request." This was done as part of a bad business deal. Not sure how they got suckered into this one, but it stinks.

Do us all a favor and don't go to any shows. That way we'll all be closer to the stage.

why do you care about this? so it's the verizon tour. big deal. It's like when you tune into the Nokia Sugar Bowl or the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. Sure it's lame that they're called that. but does it take away from the actual game? of course not.

How did they used to have integrity but now they don't? because of the Verizon thing?

I cant say that your point is not interesting...much respect on it. But well...they have already became much more than a rock band, they have a bunch of employees they have to care about, families, etc etc....what can we say...all that people must have to eat something, dont they?

what i know is that you're blowing something waaaaaaaaay out of proportion. something that should be a good thing has somehow turned into a warped view on false greed.

Maybe after the whole At&T thing at Lolla last year, they decided to partner up with Verizon???? just a thought.

It doesn't bother me though, I'm in it for the music. They keep putting out great music, and I'll keep coming back for more. I don't give a shit about selling out/integrity or any of that shit....I'm here for the tunes.

  • What's the diff between AT&T and Verizon?..... weren't they knocking AT&T for censoring them at Lollapalooza?

other than the fact they are two different companies?
  • at least they could admit it, like when weezer called their yahoo sponsorship the corporate sell-out tour.

and btw, it's obvious that those who are saying, "why do you care," are only saying that cuz they care as well, maybe even more so than you.

maybe they will do a a gateway remix of do the evolution next... who knows?

"can you hear me now?" "good."

Actually it can. It makes everything feel so superficial. Like American Idol. No substance.

I don't feel that way about Pearl Jam, though.
I pledge to you a government that will not only work well, but wisely, its ability to act tempered by prudence, and its willingness to do good, balanced by the knowledge that government is never more dangerous than when our desire to have it help us blinds us to its great power to harm us.

    well times have changed
since large groups of people dont pay for the music anymore, they have to make some money

and just because they are using the service to distribute the boots, why does that make them a sell out.

Like American Idol with no substance? WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT!?!?!?!?!?!

It's going to be like any other pearl jam show. it's not like Ed's going to have "Verizon" written on his guitar!

Jesus Christ people. Give it a fucking break. The day Pearl Jam takes advice from people like us who post on a message board is the day they truly lose their senses.

I did not realize Verizon was the tour sponsor. Is that the case or is this like using I-Tunes to download music. That would make a big difference. The rules have changed too btw. It is 2008 and shit is not good

i can see what the OP is saying... i dont get the move on PJ's part... maybe just because i dont have the capability to D/L music on my phone... or if i do i dont know how... id say most PJ fans are purist when it comes to music quality tho (thus the vinyl enthusiasm) and phone music is never the highest quality... and how large is the youth fanbase really?? i mean, im only 20 and i dont know that many PJ fans... and the ones i do know dont do stupid trendy shit like D/L 3 songs out of an entire show onto their phone... the fun is having the whole show as it actually happened...

its not a shot at PJ... just dont get the move... the option to get the physical CD this tour definitely outweights the negative of this whole verizon option... and its not like verizon will have anything to do with the shows themselves as theyre happening (as far as i understand)... itll just be after the fact to get the music to fans (with fancy phones :D)
