When you put a company's name next to your band's name, you officially have a sponsor. Rolling Stones and Sprint. The Police and Best Buy. Tons more I can't even think of.

Who says they are putting their name next to Verizon's? They are just using a Verizon product to disseminate their music.

I don't see what the big fucking deal is.

If it had been Billy Bob's Cell Phone company, would you have felt better?

I did not realize Verizon was the tour sponsor. Is that the case or is this like using I-Tunes to download music. That would make a big difference. The rules have changed too btw. It is 2008 and shit is not good

Verizon isn't sponsoring the fuckin' tour ... I don't know wtf the original poster if fucking talking about.

so I guess you're saying that I didn't comment on how it'll feel "superficial" like American Idol. Well, American Idol isn't superficial because of sponsors or advertising, as you're suggesting that PJ sponsored by Verizon will.

What he's talking about is you keep ignoring the part of his post where he says he doesn't feel that way about Pearl Jam, though.

yeah all they're doing together is "mobile bootlegs" or whatever.

for some people, phones with internet use have replaced computers. when PJ first started with the digital bootlegs on their website, they were ahead of the curve. people who get their music from V-Cast or whatever it is will probably make use of it.

    Interesting Point.

I know i have the 94 atlanta boot and Ed makes a big deal about saying something like:

"Well we don't have to thank any sponsors because we dont' have any fuckin sponsors"

Seems like the band cared a lot about that before i guess not as much now.

IMO its almost more gimmicky to make a point of saying that you DONT have sponsors... that was in fashion back then in the "grunge" circle... so werent they just doing what was cool back then? their intentions now with this "sponsor" seems more sincere and considerate of the fans than their old actions and words... its still being carefully moderated and controlled by the band and itll never take away from the music

What, so trying to distribute the boots in a new and inovative way makes them sellouts? They're doing this for the fans. The only way the can do this is through a phone network, like Verizon. Quit your whining.

Didn't Pearl Jam 'Sell-Out' when they signed with Sony/Epic is 1990? I mean, in 1990... was Sony a 'corporation' or not? Couldn't they have continued to make records in the tiny independent scene, like Mudhoney?
    ...
So all of this 'Sell-out'... 'corporate'... bulllshit from talentless people really doesn't mean shit if these fans bought into it... right? And aren't you a Corporate whore/Sell-out if you drive a car? Ride in an Airliner? Use a computer? All those things are made by corporations and your buying into them make you a corporate lackey, don't it?

that felt like a huge hand job to me. give me a break. who are these fans? sorry, but they don't exist. i've been posting here for years. NEVER have i read anyone requesting music via mobile phones. NEVER. do a search for it yourself. do you really think they were getting all these requests and yet the boards were totally silent about it. no way.

so, they made a deal with verizon. ok, i have an opinion about that but i don't even feel like getting into that right now. my point is, don't hide behind what was really just a multi-million dollar deal by claiming you're doing some kind of favor to fans by meeting their non-existent requests.

is it going to stop me from listening to their music? no. but i'd be lying if i didn't say it was kind of annoying.

that being said, still super pumped about the shows this summer.
yah thats the line out of the whole bootleg message that really got me too... there are times when no explanation is necessary... id rather that than some total BS reason... i dont really have much of an opinion on the matter tho... nothings changing... its just one new option

This is such bullshit! This fucking band is doing something that's semi-inovative and "new age" fan friendly...and some of you motherfuckers get on your high horse and call them sellouts.

Well then get the fuck off the bandwagon a-holes! Every fucking move they make is scrutinized by the fucking peanut gallery.

I can't see how this is anytihng resembling a sellout move. They are trying to bring us music in a new and cool way...it's called staying modern and moving with technology.

I started the first thread about the Verizon deal, and it was that line about fan requests that pissed me off. But I kind of overreacted, as is my habit when it comes to things like this.

If I had taken a second to get my thoughts straight, I probably would have written something similar to your much more reasonable post.

Anyways, even though this is a fan board, I think a little dissent is welcome once in a while. They're just guys who make great music and sometimes have to make tough decisions. And sometimes those decisions deserve to be criticized, or at least discussed.

Ed's encore speech at San Diego, 6-5-03.

"You know, this is ridiculous and it's been on my mind all night. I thought this is ridiculous to talk about at a show or a concert, but I just have to talk about it. Are you willing to...

You know I find this one kind of artist, singer, something or other poet actress, whatever, fascinating. This person fascinating. And her name is Jewel. (laughs, cheers)

And for me I'm anticipating her next record so highly I can barely think of anything else. So when I mess up a lyric or I do...it's because I just can't wait for this new Jewel record to come out you see. It's an obsession.

But here's the great news I found out today. That before it even comes out her song, one of her, some...this song, can't wait to hear it. It's actually gonna be I'm not even gonna have to...it's gonna be part of a commercial for uh I think ladies' razors or some other feminine hygiene product (scattered boos)...

So I am just so excited because I don't even have to download anything...I can just watch TV and wait for the commercial. I'm so excited! Wow!

And it's not like ya know, it reminded me of this offer that we turned down. But the best one that we got was for Viagra. And it was a...they showed us these little story boards and it was a singing penis. A little singing cock singing I'M STILL ALIVE. It was really cool. (cheers)

Six Million dollars we turned down to prevent our song to prevent our song to be sung by a cock.

Alright, I'm gonna...if I can forget about Jewel and cocks and something for a second, I'd like to play a song... um and it's uh, I mentioned the Who before and it's a rarity. And uh, sing it for Pete who's my hero." (goes into Blue, Red, and Grey on ukulele)

So maybe Ed saw how well the memory of The Who did selling out with all their music in countless commercials... It all makes sense now!

Remember when Pearl Jam almost canceled a concert in 2000 because the venue had Dodge billboards on the stage? (or something like that)

    Wow.

Remember the first time they played Letterman? It's cause it was a commercial free show. From then it turned into their regular talk show circuit, and all the performances have been awesome. Remember all Ed's on stage jokes and speeches about American Idol and Sheryl Crow etc?

I never called Pearl Jam a sell out. Ever. Not when they began using ticketmaster again in '98 (they had to), not when they signed with J Records for Avocado (really, who cares), not when they made videos, not when they played on SNL with Lindsay Lohan, not when they made everyone line up at Tower Records to try to get into a free show, not ever. All of those were logical, common, business and music moves from a band that wanted to let people they're out there.

But, I am afraid, this is Pearl Jam's first Sell Out move.

    Perhaps just another Who tribute....

When you put a company's name next to your band's name, you officially have a sponsor. Rolling Stones and Sprint. The Police and Best Buy. Tons more I can't even think of.

Congratulations, Pearl Jam. The 2008 Verizon Tour. This was not done "By fan's request." This was done as part of a bad business deal. Not sure how they got suckered into this one, but it stinks.

I despise the term, 'Sell-out'. It is normally reserved for pimpled faced adolescents who have nothing of value to offer and use it to pretend they have something to bring to the table.
That said... I'm glad to hear Led Zeppelin or The Who on commercials. It sure beats the lame ass jingles that used to be written by the likes of Barry Manilow. Zeppelin? Manilow? To me, it's a no brainer.
And I'm GLAD people like Nick Drake, The Buzzcocks and Iggy Pop get paid royalties by corporations for songes they wrote decades ago and only got nickels and dimes for. What is more Punk Rock than a big corporation paying out thousands to a punk rocker so they can use a song he wrote about alcohol, drug abuse and male prostitution to promote their Cruise Ships?

Integrity. The band used to have it.

Flame on, fuckers. You know it's true. :)

You are right to call them out on this because they have been so obnoxious about not being sponsored by anything for so long. It is lame to have Verizon mentioned in every press release.

I wouldn't go so far as saying they don't have integrity but it is hypocritical to do what they are doing.

I was looking at the rider someone posted from thesmokinggun.com and I think it said that ad signs by the stage have to be covered. It is hypocritical to now have "Verizon" in all the press releases giving them the advertising.

That's what I have been trying to say but no one else seems to listen. All this talk about the band not wanting corporate masters, yet from the get-go they were signed to Sony. Their very first album was "Ten" which sold over ten million copies. Pearl Jam never really was an underground indie band that got popular and sold out.

And while they do try to take ethical stances on a lot of things, at the same time this is also their jobs. What the hell do people think the reason for all that stuff being sold in the goods section is for?

I wonder how many of the people who are crying, 'Sell Out' have a boatload of posters and sit and contemplate the monetary value of their vinyl collection.
You like the band... or you don't. It's that simple. If you model your life around a rock band, you have priority issues. If you want to get riled about something... how about getting riled about the soldiers you've sent to war, coming home to ghetto like conditions at our veteran's hospitals... or how we plan to 'Spread Democracy' to others, while forfeiting our own liberties here at home.
I happen to like the band... but, I know there will come a day where I will move on. It's rock And Roll, kiddies... not Life Or Death.

Pearl Jam is sponsored by Boeing Aircraft... because they fly a Boeing built 757 from Seattle to Tennessee.
And Boeing Aircraft Company makes F15 and F-22 Fighter Aircraft... which are used in Warfafe... therefore, Pearl Jam supports WAR.

I think their insistence to break away from anything 'commercial' got a bit cringe worthy and self-righteous. However, I still agree with them and believe that they were 100% right. Whilst there's no indication that Verizon are sponsoring this tour, it would be weird to see them do a U-turn on this stance.

Eddie Vedder (and I know it's not just down to him) has always struck me as a person that if you were to interview him in 1992, then interview him in 2008 with the same questions, he'd still have a similar outlook. Obviously he's not as aggressive as he was, and maybe is a bit more relaxed in regards to the music industry biz. But it would be dissapointing if he went back on his values.

But at the end of the day, there's no indication that Verizon are sponsoring the tour.
