I think you have a point. However, I trust the band to make the best decisions under the circumstances. Or at least decisions in relatively good faith. And honestly, if it helps with Ed getting off his fucking high horse and disparage random artists from the comfort of the stage, then be it.
Integrity. The band used to have it.

Clicking into this thread was sort of a buzz kill... who cares... 1995 isn't 2008... People change... bands change... situations change... everything changes.

Everyone in the world has to kiss the corporate ass sometimes. I dont like wal mart. Do the have great prices? Hell yeah they do, cause its a free market and money is tight right now. Do you have a job with a corporation? Probably. Whether it's Verizon, Safeway, U-haul, Subway, or Tampax. Corporate sponsorship probably helps the band out with the bills. If someone wanted to pay for my gas say and put a magnetic logo on both sides and the back side of my car, but my gas was free, I would sure as hell let them.

I dont see this as that big a slap in the face if it helps bring the band to the fans. Now play AZ please. I'll even swtich my cell phone to verizon at the show.

so i get home and see this thread is still going strong?

verizon is not sponsoring this tour. how anyone surmised that out of the announcement about the bootlegs is still beyond me.

the point of mentioning verizon is because people with verizon phones are the ones that will be able to receive this download. end of story.

my god, you people know how to blow things out of proportion. :p

That is actually a pretty good point. It is pretty easy to bash another artist when you are on a stage in front of thousands of your own fans. Kind of a low class thing to do too I think especially since what Jewel does with her songs is no one's business but her own.

As far as I know, verzion didnt buy naming rights for the tour, like Best Buy did for the Stones.

Pearl Jam just partnered with them for downloads. The 10C, as far as I know, isnt operating a phone company at the moment.

Times are different. I understand the shock and awe of them with Verizon. A year or two ago Ed laid out the possibilities of a sponsor, as much as he also was and I am sure is against it, it is necessary to make some money.

Sure, 13 years ago when the fan base was up, record sales were up, and the cost of living was way down, they could do without. But none of those things are true anymore, and I am quite sure it costs a very shiny, pretty penny to tour even just one coast.

Not excusing it, just maybe reasoning it. And possibly there still will be no Verizon banner hanging behind the stage...as others have said, the "tour" is not sponsored by Verizon, just the downloads for the Verizon phones.

I'm sure Pearl Jam has heard the term "sell-out" from day one. Didn't Kurt Cobain call them corporate rock way back when they first hit? But I see this Verizon deal as nothing more than a simple one-off distribution deal. This time it's just mobile downloads instead of CDs. And in fact Verizon is only getting a small fraction of what will be offered to the fans directly from the band themselves through the 2008 bootlegs. Bootlegs that are coming directly from Pearl Jam, no record label, no third party.

If I were a band and I wanted more people to hear my music (not just core fans but new fans too), in 2008 it makes a lot of sense to distribute some music with a mobile carrier instead of a record label. CD sales are down and sinking while mobile phones are evolving into mobile devices with faster download speeds and better quality sound and video every year. Why not get your music out there? Pearl Jam retains ownership of all their music, there is no Verizon logo anywhere near the stage just like there was never a Sony logo, Pearl Jam doesn't do any stupid commercials, and some people might actually get turned on to Pearl Jam by listening to a FREE live track. I really don't see a down side.

    Get over it.
  • I read this whole thread before I even read the news release from ten club about the boots. Doesn't this single paragraph from that release explain thing?:

"Pearl Jam continues to explore new and innovative ways to get their music to their fans," said Ten Club Manager Tim Bierman. "As we have learned from our younger fans, more and more listeners are accessing their music through their mobile phones." Continued Bierman, "Since Verizon Wireless and V CAST are at the forefront of that technology, this collaboration makes perfect sense to us. With our proven track record of delivering high quality bootleg downloads and CDs, we feel this new approach will not only benefit our fans, but provide an exciting opportunity to share Pearl Jam's music in a more interactive setting."

It looks like Pearl Jam is just taking advantage of some great technology for fast delivery of quality boots:

All of Pearl Jam's bootlegs recordings will be professionally mixed in real-time at each show to create the mobile bootlegs. Pearl Jam's recording engineer will mix the recordings on the Verizon Mobile Recording Studio Bus.

My initial reaction to seeing a corporate name next to Pearl Jam's was disturbing. I was at that San Diego show when Ed talked about Jewel, and I was at the Irvine show with the Dodge advertisements (anyone remember, "Can't find a better van?"). High Fidelity made a fine point, and it's okay to criticize (how soon we forget the lambasting this board saw following the Ed solo tour ticket debacle)... we just need to be civil about it.
First show: 3 November 1993 (San Diego)...

Most recent show: 12 July 2008 (VH1 Rock Honours)...

Next show: Let's get a tour together...

Ten Club... you make me smile.

What's the diff between AT&T and Verizon?..... weren't they knocking AT&T for censoring them at Lollapalooza?
They are competitors. But really that not different, they both suck!

On the day Pearl Jam opens their East Coast Leg of a tour... in the South, where they haven't played since when... 2003? You'd think that Pearl Jam fans would be celebrating and feeling happy for their fellow fans tonight.
    ...
Instead... what? Calling them 'Sell-Outs'... hypocrites... and pretty much telling them how and how not to run their business.
    ...
I'm glad they don't read this bullshit message board. This way, they can still have the image of us being cool people... instead of the judgemental little people with a huge sense of self-righteousness.

    the who sell out.

i have that on 8 track.
  • i understand your point, but its not like the band is doing anything greedy with verizon....they have phones being donated to help those less fortunate and they are getting their live music out a new way, which includes a free song from each show! you cant beat that

people we're calling them sell outs last year and the year before that, but then lolla happened and everyone shut(ed) the fuck up

I don't know. It just seems to me that Jewel would be an easy target that requires no risk when you bash her in front of thousands of your own fans (and probably very few if any of hers). Plus I don’t recall Ed ever speaking out against Zeppelin or his good friends The Who when they sold their songs to be in car commercials.

The way I see it if you are a professional musician, it is similar to being a pro athlete in that, unless you want to go back to a regular job when your music career is over, you very likely only have a very small window in which to make enough money to set you up for the rest of your life.

I'm a HUGE defender of the band...come hell or high water!

However, I kinda have to agree on this one. I'm not sure why they did it. There had to be some necessary business move in play. Maybe it was needed to help pay for the actual tour without charging us an arm and a leg for the tickets. Whatever the reason, Pearl Jam and Verizon should never be in the same sentence together, let alone a ticket stub.

Does anybody REALLY give a shit about this stuff? I mean come on, what difference does it make?

As long as they are the ones writing and performing the songs then I really don't see the point in us bitching and moaning at each other beacuse of some deal that has been done that in now way affects the music.

    just my two cents worth...

Didn't Pearl Jam 'Sell-Out' when they signed with Sony/Epic is 1990? I mean, in 1990... was Sony a 'corporation' or not? Couldn't they have continued to make records in the tiny independent scene, like Mudhoney?
    ...
So all of this 'Sell-out'... 'corporate'... bulllshit from talentless people really doesn't mean shit if these fans bought into it... right? And aren't you a Corporate whore/Sell-out if you drive a car? Ride in an Airliner? Use a computer? All those things are made by corporations and your buying into them make you a corporate lackey, don't it?

Exactly! Everyone needs to chill out. When I go to see Pearl Jam I dont give two shits if there are ads everywhere or not. Im not looking for the ads and I am looking at the stage and listening to the music.

Talk to me when they start name dropping corporations in their songs. Then I'll be concerned.

Seriously, the original poster has a point. I love it when everyone gets all bent out of shape when the truth is spoken. If you love the band to death or not, it is the truth.

Dosen't make them (PJ) evil for doing it just as much as there is nothing wrong in pointing out Ed's hypocrisy. It is a message board, talking stuff out it what it all about.
