Perhaps why tickets were so expensive - retirement pot for MC.
Tickets in general for every artist that big is around that price, I think it is just a symptom of the royalty-stingy streaming times for artists to make a profit moreso than Matt specifically
Given that Pearl Jam has the antithesis of a rigorous touring schedule for a band of their size and ilk there are only three options that make sense in terms of this move IMHO:
1) Celebrate Soundgarden’s legacy on the heals of their forthcoming RRHOF induction. Perhaps in the form of a tour or new album with reinterpretation/recreation that still tastefully pays homage to its first incarnation with someone such as Brandi Carlisle fronting. It’s important to remember that Ben and Kim haven’t been generating as lucrative of a regular source of income . It would be a full circle moment in which “one hand, washes the other”. This scenario seems the most likely to me in some capacity.
2) The Foo Fighters are a successful and energetic live band, but a move to the FF is a step down in terms of MFC’s legacy. He would be playing a setlist of very night which to this time was entirely written by someone else . At 63 years old and having a shelf life , the only benefit that could possibly provide is either a bigger pay day (ie. pay raise or higher frequency of shows)
3) A general feeling that the dynamics of the band or at least his involvement in the band has run its course. Maybe personality misalignments, creative outlet disagreements or patience has won thin . It happens in marriages every day.
On a side note, I have always been generally curious at how PJ Inc contractually structured their agreements with their past drummers including Matt Cameron in terms of their royalty cuts on albums, merch, concerts , etc. Many huge/large bands aren’t equitably split between the members and some members have no control over the output of said band name entities .

I think he is just ready to simplify things for himself. I do hope there is SG activity.

I’ve always been curious about that last part. Most bands go through some changes, and while they all handle it differently, I’m sure there’s a norm to follow. I would assume passed drummers get royalties from albums there were on, even rereleases 30 years later. But nothing from albums they weren’t on. But I’m sure things like the vault complicate it. They’d probably have to include the performing drummer, but also not want to cut Matt out when they release a pre-98 vault. Would be kinda odd if only 4 of the current members made money off something they put out.

The #1 scenario to me is the first thing I thought of. Mainly because there is unreleased/unfinished music in the can to work on. 2026 could very well be a Soundgarden kind of year. In looking at the official statements from both camps, Matt mentions "...the mighty PJ" and the band replies with "...the mighty Soundgarden". Regardless, best of luck to both.
Who the fuck wants Soundgarden without Cornell singing? Like MFC is his own person, but jesus that'd be disappointing.
Me...just like STP and AIC...the music continues
STP wasn't good after Weiland died, let alone Bennington—I have no interest in their new stuff, perhaps it's decent. Black Gives Way to Blue was a great album, but everything after it hasn't been.

AIC is the perfect example. For years it seemed Laynes voice was to unique to be replaced. They have many fans who are happy they are a band again.
the “only Chris can sing for them” folks are free to not listen and stay home. If the surviving members want to reunite, that’s their right. Just as it’s Matt’s right to not give us two words about what led him to his decision.
Layne's departure/death made it evident just how important Cantrell really was to the signature AIC sound. And like I said, BGWTB was a genuinely killer album. I just couldn't get into the next two.

I just happen to be listening to a Canadian Indie / Rock mix today and Big Wreck came on...man that dude was def a fan of CC - maybe too on the nose to be a SG singer.

STP? The DeLeos can play. Was never an AIC fan. To me there is no Soundgarden without Chris. I think Vicky will to see to that. Not sure how PJ moves on from this. I guess they have replaced drummers a few times.
I can’t imagine how exhausting it would be to be that age and touring, maybe the dude just wanted to slow down and enjoy a different pace of life with family?

That's my guess. I hope to retire at 62 as well.

Artists, art. I can't see any way that any of these guys "retire" in the 10 to 20 years. Continue as PJ, maybe not. But look at the Stones, Who, Neil Young and a whole bunch of musicians in their 70's and 80's. It's in their blood to create and perform.
As for Matt. He got a good taste of stepping out from behind the kit in Portland 2024.Maybe that's more his next move. Pull a Dave Grohl.

I agree with this. So many great bands continue until they physically can’t. A big difference when you’re older is they get to play when and where they want. They don’t need to do 70-show tours, 4 nights a week unless they want to. People who retire at 60 will still take up a hobby. I imagine for a lot of them that is still music when it can be on their own terms and not just a grind.
A big difference between SG and the other bands is wasn’t Chris the main writer for soundgarden?
Hard to replace both the main person behind the music and the voice. STP and AIC was different. Although, I’d see any of them if it was local. Still would be good, just not the same. I Wanted to see AIC a few times, but was out of town when they came by.

I agree with you on AIC... I've had little to no interest since Layne passed. It's not the same for me, but if others like it, more power to them.
Fans: Yes sir… I have an idea.
And AIC...Rainier Fog was a great album and they still rock live.
I was an SG fan first....didn't get into PJ hard core until SG broke up.
