So glad I got to see them before Matt retired, never thought he was the best fit for the band but admire his longevity. I hope they don't do the session drummer thing and get someone from their era willing to be a member of the band and just do less touring. Jack is still a beast on the drums but I don't think they'd ask him.
I believe Dave Krusen, since Matt's announcement, has said he would be open to if they asked and I also saw an interview in May last year where he said he thinks there is 'unfinished business' and he wished that things could go 'full circle'. I mean, if they still have a good relationship I don't see what is stopping this from happening. I can live with Even Flow being 20BPM slower again and getting it's GROOVE back.
How do we all say thank you to the band and the crew for all the time we've spent together in rooms filled with incredible music? We say thank you, Matt Cameron for keeping time, keeping the band together, and keeping SoundGarden in our ears and hearts. Matt, you kept time with thunderous precision, soul, and love and stability. It's incredibly sad to see you leave, you will be missed so much. SG and PJ are linked forever, and Matt helped ensure that both bands thrived. Thank you, Matt.
I do hope Matt, Kim, and Ben can finish those songs they started with CC - they deserve to be heard.
Reading Matt's post and knowing how painful repetitive stress injuries can be, along with thinking of the years of music and miles he's put on his body, one knows that the decision to hang it up was not an easy one. I don't think he would have made this decision unless he was putting himself at risk physically. These guys are athletes - we never see the training, workouts, and lifestyle choices they make to perform at such levels, kudos to the guys for rocking as much and as well as they have into their 60s. I know, right? Where did the time go?
Matt Cameron was the first drummer. Then Dave K. Then Matt Chamberlain. Then Dave A. Then Jack. Then Matt Cameron again. Seems like it's Dave K's turn again next...
I do hope Matt, Kim, and Ben can finish those songs they started with CC - they deserve to be heard.
I think this has a lot to do with his decision. The legal situation that prohibited that, has been somewhat resolved, I believe. (As much as its likely going to be.) I would not be surprised to see Matt devoting time to a project with Kim and Ben that shares a little more Chris/SG with the world, whatever form that takes. I have NO info, just my belief. Its been their heart's desire.
** and yes, I agree. In a way, Matt was PJ's 1st drummer.

I can’t imagine anything has changed since CC’s death where MC couldn’t devote time to SG related projects and still stay in PJ.

Yah, PJ has a lot of downtime as a band. I don't think it would of prevented him from laying down drums and what not for an EP's worth of songs?
I'm guessing he's getting older and drumming take it's toll. Probably wanted to take a step back from active touring and drumming at the scale.

Agreed. I don’t really get the opinion that he’s prioritizing SG to the exclusion of Pearl Jam. When both bands were touring after King Animal came out, he chose Pearl Jam over Soundgarden. Why would that change now, especially after Chris’ death?
you couldn't swing if you were hangin' from a palm tree in a hurricane
Because of the timing of it all, I feel like he is going to be working on another project (Soundgarden) that they aren’t ready to fully announce yet. I feel like if this was a full retirement and that both sides knew for a while they each would have had a little more to say.. 27 years is long time to just end with a small paragraph each. So they each release a small statement now and then in a few months we probably hear more from the Soundgarden people. They may also be setting this up to coincide with the HOF induction since they will be in the spotlight. But if this is the path it seems a bit strange to have to announce a retirement from PJ now. They just finished a new record and two tours so it seems like there would be some natural down time to where Matt could go work on another project. If it is a Soundgarden project that doesn’t feel like a multi year thing. Matt has done both before so why not just scope out the Soundgarden thing for a bit. If it ends up becoming more of a full time thing then you go ahead and announce a retirement from PJ at that point. Unless… PJ has got the itch to get back into the studio now while the fires are hot. Matt says I’ve got this other thing I’ve got to do so you would have to do it without me this time. Since anything after that would be 5+ years away, maybe now’s the time to step down from PJ so both sides can keep moving forward while there’s still time…

Because he's in his 60s now. 14 years ago he was in his late 40s.
There's a world of difference of what some can do considering that vast difference in age and the amount of miles on his drumming arms and legs.
If he is looking to slow down... doing a side project studio EP from home versus full-time internaional touring duties in a major band are worlds Apart. I know this is the Pearl Jam way of owing us nothing, but a little hint as to his thoughts would have been something. As this is a massive announcement and he knows his fans or caring and concerned. And there are so many possible reasons, some of which having to do with factors other than Pearl Jam.

I guess? I just don’t thinks he’s choosing SG over PJ. He's leaving Pearl Jam, and possibly doing some SG something, but Pearl Jam was a full time gig. SG will likely not be.

I see no reason to think that this was a bad breakup.
I think he realized he’s not a spring chicken, playing 50 shows on 3 continents in 13 months probably helped him come to realize that the drummer for Pearl Jam needs to be all in. Maybe he was slightly nudged out, and maybe the band wants to do more touring, longer setlists, etc. Maybe he just realized I’ve only got 3-8 more years where he can do the things he wants, and he just wants to skydive and play drums and do collaborations.
The way the band celebrated him in retrospect gives me enough visual evidence that this wasn’t some sort of Jane’s Addiction style drama.
This might be the end, but I see no tea leaves indicating that. Lots of drummers can play shows and we’ll have a blast. Matt’s creative side will be missed, and he’s one hell of a drummer. As long as whomever replaces him can handle the entire catalog, then I’ll be good with it. I honestly hope this means 30 song setlists come back too. The ticket prices and travel expenses to watch them play 23 songs got a little extreme on the DM tour.

so he’s not retiring…
"...I changed by not changing at all..."
There is no plot. He is done with Pearl Jam. Everything else is white noise. Let's get a new drummer and move on.
