Since 2022 I started realizing that PJ could come to an end relatively soon. During the DM tour these feelings have grown. With the end of the wonderful MC chapter, the heart of a rock band, I am frightened that they won't be together longer than 2026. Really hope I'm wrong..
I agree
It has a feeling of Radiohead after 2017. They put out one of the best albums of their career, and sounded tight as ever/had a joyful tour before silence.

The Comes Then Goes tag makes a bit of sense given the new hindsight of the meaning of those Pitts shows.

Anybody else puzzled as there is no reason given? If it‘s retirement, too much touring, creative differences…all that could have been said easily. So gotta be a different band or a reason that is not supposed to be public?
Matt, simply put, thank you. While this was a Monday morning gut punch, I am happy for you and wish you the best.
This makes me appreciate attending Pittsburgh night 2 even more. Following that amazing show, I wrote my first-ever Fanview ... after 24 concerts since 1996. In it, I included the comments below. Today's news makes me feel this even more. We need to enjoy everything about this incredible band for as long as they choose play.
"Knowing that the guys are going to take a well-deserved long break, I am excited to hear new music from them in a couple years. But I also wonder how long they can do this. While I would love to see their live shows for many more years, I also want them to be appreciated for putting out relevant music and being incredible live, and not like so many bands that stay around too long and hurt the reputation they worked so hard to build. While it will be interesting to see how it plays out, I am stoked to know they will be back in 2026 or 2027!"

Been thinking about this all day... Why would Matt need to leave the band, if he didn't have to? Drummer for Pearl Jam is a cool job, but not the most demanding of gigs. 8-12 shows a year, an album every 4 or 5 years or more? What's going on? Doesn't make any sense, unless Pearl Jam is about to start recording with someone else, very soon, or Matt is going to be full time with someone else... Just hope Matt is OK because this is really a strange situation. When is the next time Pearl Jam will need a drummer and what would stop Matt from being that guy?

I though the same thing but saying creative differences would causes a bit of controversy given their drummer history. Might be a health thing but I think it's more to do with the commitment of being in a band of this size, it's a corporation at this point. He probably wants the freedom to do what he wants, when he wants. I think doing double duty for PJ and Soundgarden was a lot for him and he doesn't want to do that again if he has other interests.

I think being in PJ is a commitment, regardless of how many days they put into it in a year. Its a big entity and stuff needs to be planned and I'm sure theres so many mechanizations at work for them. Maybe Matt wanted to be 100% in charge of his schedule and not beholden to what crops up for the band. Yes he could balance side projects, or whatever is happening with SG, and what PJ needs to do, but maybe he just wanted more freedom than that. It sucks, but he's earned it and owes us nothing.

Maybe something with Soundgarden, to close that chapter. And Maybe he is really starting to feel it physically, so he bowed out. We may never know, but all the doom talkers are not helpful here (not meaning you).
Please, Pearl Jam, consider a Benaroya Hall vinyl reissue!
I really see no way that this has anything to do with a Soundgarden reunion. There is no reunion, no Soundgarden, without Chris Cornell. Now, he could look to "reunite" with Kim and Ben, but that would be an entirely new band IMO. I could get behind a "Foundgarden" project with Liv Warfield on vocals.

I dont feel like Soundgarden would be a big enough project to make him bow out of PJ. When Soundgarden had conflicts before they disbanded, Matt chose PJ over Soundgarden.
Hopefully it's just Matt being ready to retire and that he's in good health and what not.
I think it’s as simple as the man is ready to just 100% do his own thing, on his time. Which he deserves many times over. Legendary drummer and musician and a staple to the era of music that is the sound track to all our lives.
Cheers to MC

I’m still trying to gather my thoughts around this. Saw them in NZ and Aus in Nov not realizing that that would be the last time I would see Matt with the band. Had amazing views of Matt at the NZ 2 show. What a drummer. I feel saddened that a part of my life has slipped away having followed the band from 2006-2024. All the best to you Matt and thanks! Love and peace.
I just hope the next drummer is unable to play any Dark Matter songs! And frankly, I don't go to PJ shows to focus on the drummer. It stinks that one of the guys is leaving, but drummer is most replaceable.
I'm surprised no one on this board read into all the hugs the band gave Matt at the end of the show. Hindsight...
I don't think the band will be calling it a day, yet. We'll probably get a few more tours probably with previous drummers or Josh Klinghoffer.
I definitely think that they knew this was Matt's final PJ show, especially with it being on the anniversary of Chris Cornell's passing. I don't think Matt is done yet, he mentioned in his post "more to follow." I doubt he will be joining the Foo Fighters at his age, instead we may be getting one final run of shows (maybe new songs) from the remaining Soundgarden members. After that I think Matt will officially retire.
It hurts my soul. I had tickets to Nashville 1 and had to pull out for reasons. Hurt then, hurts more now. I only know MFC on the throne live. First live show was 2003. I've been to a few shows since then and it never failed that Eddie would make it a point to call out how lucky they were to have Matt in the band, So true.✌️❣️🤘
I always dreaded the day this would happen to any member of Pearl Jam. Thank you Matt Cameron for everything you have given to Pearl Jam and the fans for all these years! Your love, energy, passion, talent, for the music soundtrack of my life and all for the great memories and watching you play live. I wish you all the health and happiness always!

I know how much I dislike things about modern Pearl Jam (Eddie’s onstage chit chat, Klinghoffer being there). It’s entirely possible a band member feels the same way, and quits.
Inevitable that some insufferable dumbshit goes here - I'll help you out so we can shut this down now. Try singing with all your effort for say...10 minutes. Now try 30. Oh, your little throat is sore? Now go for 2.5+ hours and do it every night or other night for two months. Insufferable nonsense. Please be more like Matt and leave this conversation with some fucking grace.
I sing in public 4 nights a week for 2.5 hours each gig.
Hopefully if they tour again they can work around Eddie’s vocal limitations in other ways. Like say, maybe Pearl Jam can JAM on songs and extend instrumentals rather than Eddie blathering on.
"I'll tell you what: If all I had was Pearl Jam, and I didn't have another band in the world, I would not be worried. Because in there is the essence of making great music. You don't have to use it all at once, but it's there." - Neil Young
It seems like this was decided before the tour. No way to know right now but a lot of the things Ed said indicate that. So based on that and the bands statement it doesn't seem like they plan on being done right now. Otherwise why would Matt say he's leaving something that's ending? Things change, but that's just my take. Either way Matt Cameron is THE drummer of Pearl Jam in my book. He played as great as ever on this tour and I'm grateful for the 27 years he was part of the group. He's the only drummer ive ever seen live. Whether it's retirement or something else all the best to Matt.
Shock... sadness... gratitude... wow. It's going to take some serious time to process this. Thank you Matt for making this the best band in the world. Nothing but respect and warmest wishes for your next chapter. Best drummer, period.

This still feels like a punch to the gut, though MFC stabilized the most the most revolving door position in all of rock since Spinal Tap.
