Since 2022 I started realizing that PJ could come to an end relatively soon. During the DM tour these feelings have grown. With the end of the wonderful MC chapter, the heart of a rock band, I am frightened that they won't be together longer than 2026. Really hope I'm wrong..up here in my tree in Vienna

Wild being at the last 2 shows with MC in the band. Also seeing You Are in Vegas in 2024... Amazing drummer and an even better person from what I hear.Grateful for everything he has brought to the best band in the world. So glad I saw them three times last year!!!
Take care Matt.0 -
I love me some MFC!
Sad, but kinda relieved though.
The rumor that I was told before a flight to Nashville was that it was going to be a band members last show in Pittsburgh.
They said it was gonna be Mike that was leaving. Maybe to throw me off.
Love MFC, but no PJ without Mike.
I didn't take it seriously, but they insisted and said to do everything I could to get to Pittsburgh. Hmmm. Missed those.
I am not in the " know" at all, but I'm pretty sure the band has known for quite a while.

My first show was in 1998 so all I've ever known is Matt behind the kit...until the Oakland 2022 shows where he was stuck in Arizona with COVID. While I was amazed at what songs they were able to pull off without him, there definitely felt like something was missing. There were very few Gigaton songs played over those two nights.I also had a ticket to Sacramento 2022 which got cancelled when Jeff got COVID. Thankfully, they were able to reschedule Sac for 2024 and I was able to see him behind the kit one last time. They even played Dance of the Clairvoyants, which I was really excited about.Matt really stabilized the lineup when he stepped in for the 1998 tour, and I will always be grateful for that.0

The Comes Then Goes tag makes a bit of sense given the new hindsight of the meaning of those Pitts shows.Randall's Island, NY 9/29/1996, Randall's Island, NY 6/8/1997 (Ed and Mike), Jones Beach, NY 8/23/2000, Los Angeles, CA 7/10/2006, Hartford, CT 6/27/2008, Los Angeles, CA 10/6/2009, San Diego, CA 11/21/2013, Los Angeles, CA 11/24/2013, MSG, NY 5/1/2016, Seattle, WA 8/10/2018, Los Angeles, CA 5/6/2022, Los Angeles, CA 5/7/2022, Camden, NJ 9/14/2022, St Paul 8/31/2023, St Paul 9/2/2023, Las Vegas 5/18/24, MSG NY 9/3/24, Philadelphia PA 9/9/24, Ohana CA 9/27/24, Atlanta, GA 4/29/25, Pittsburgh, PA 5/16/25, Pittsburgh, PA 5/18/250

Thank you for everything, Matt. What a privilege for all of us to witness your greatness for so many years. Wishing you all the best.0

Anybody else puzzled as there is no reason given? If it‘s retirement, too much touring, creative differences…all that could have been said easily. So gotta be a different band or a reason that is not supposed to be public?0
-
Not at all puzzled if you know this band. Private about everything.0

Matt, simply put, thank you. While this was a Monday morning gut punch, I am happy for you and wish you the best.
This makes me appreciate attending Pittsburgh night 2 even more. Following that amazing show, I wrote my first-ever Fanview ... after 24 concerts since 1996. In it, I included the comments below. Today's news makes me feel this even more. We need to enjoy everything about this incredible band for as long as they choose play.
"Knowing that the guys are going to take a well-deserved long break, I am excited to hear new music from them in a couple years. But I also wonder how long they can do this. While I would love to see their live shows for many more years, I also want them to be appreciated for putting out relevant music and being incredible live, and not like so many bands that stay around too long and hurt the reputation they worked so hard to build. While it will be interesting to see how it plays out, I am stoked to know they will be back in 2026 or 2027!"Pittsburgh night 2 - 2025

Been thinking about this all day... Why would Matt need to leave the band, if he didn't have to? Drummer for Pearl Jam is a cool job, but not the most demanding of gigs. 8-12 shows a year, an album every 4 or 5 years or more? What's going on? Doesn't make any sense, unless Pearl Jam is about to start recording with someone else, very soon, or Matt is going to be full time with someone else... Just hope Matt is OK because this is really a strange situation. When is the next time Pearl Jam will need a drummer and what would stop Matt from being that guy?0
