Ugh this is brutal. He was perfect for the band. I only saw one show in '96 with Jack, so Matt has always felt like the THE drummer. Would they bring back Krusen? Seems they've maintained a good relationship with him, and he may still be up for touring...
I just hope its not done.

Sad news indeed, MFC is an absolute monster on the kit but I agree with others on here saying they'll continue. They wouldn't make this sort of announcement for one person leaving if the whole thing was over. Hindsight being 20/20, sort of saw this coming when Stone was asked about the shorter setlists post covid and he said something about Ed's voice and how the longer shows affect Matt physically. I was lucky enough to meet him after Soundgarden's show at The Palladium in Worcester 2013, I was able to get a drumstick, he signed it for me, I could be barely talk since I was completely star struck, he was cool, realized I was in shock and was very nice. I've been very lucky to meet many of my rock heroes, normally I'm relaxed but he was one of the few that made me check my underwear afterwards.
On a personal note though, you hear Matt on Soundgarden albums then on PJ albums, sometimes I think they never used him to his maximum/full capabilities. I understand they're two different bands but my gut tells me they didn't fully utilize him as they could/should. I love his song, "Get It Back", one of the best PJ songs, feels like the younger sibling to Present Tense, sort of has a new meaning now. He'll be sorely missed but the band will go on, at their age, they're not going to tour that much anyways.
Josh stepping in makes complete sense and with enough time, he'll be able to learn all the material, he's so talented. The Foos haven't officially announced a new drummer, I wonder if Grohl made an offer he couldn't refuse especially if PJ doesn't plan on touring in the foreseeable future. Matt recently mentioned on Drumeo, albeit in a joking manner that drumming for PJ and Soundgarden at the same time was tough and wasn't the wisest decision, if he ends up being the drummer for the Foos, maybe he doesn't want to deal with that but who knows. Hopefully more info will be available as time goes on.

Became a PJ fan right before Matt joined for the '98 tour so he's the only drummer I've ever "known" and this feels a little heartbreaking. Love you Matt! I hope you have an amazing time with whatever comes next.
LO2L was the first PJ album that I bought and Elderly Woman (from that one) was the song that got me hooked, although I was aware of Alive and Immortality on the radio before that. I was merely a teen when I bought LO2L so yeah, I wasn't paying too much attention to things like that, I guess.
Presidential Advice from President-Elect Mike McCready: "Are you getting something out of this all encompassing trip?"
Mike & Matt's wives were hanging side stage together at Nashville 2, and Ed gave them a shout out & some words of appreciation... it seemed *a little* odd at the time... in hindsight, it doesn't seem odd at all.

yeah I have been wondering if Get it Back might be their best....really great song that doesn't get any attention
He is one of a kind for sure. Dude can write, play guitar, sing, etc.

I remember when he join the band thinking it was a perfect full circle moment. From recording the Stone Gossard Demos to the Dark Matter tour, Matt is one of my favourite drummers. Thanks for everything. Hoping to see the next chapter of Pearl Jam.
The wording of the announcement made me think that he is moving on to something else. If he was just retiring he would've said so. Saying that more is to come means he is waiting to make some sort of announcement. Could Soundgarden be reforming with a new singer? I don't know about the Foo Fighters given his comments after Taylor's death that he then had to walk back. Maybe something totally new?
I am afraid this not just the end of Matt, but of the band's live shows. How do you replace Matt Cameron? Answer: you don't. Anything else will feel contrived. That's just me.

They planned an indefinite hiatus after the best 12 months they've had in at least 9 years... I think they've known about Matt's planned departure for a lot longer than anyone is considering.

If they did know, I'm amazed that Eddie wasn't a lot more emotional than he was. I agree that the champagne seems unusual, but the way him and Jeff were spraying it around seemed almost celebratory. I honestly think that if Eddie knew for sure that was MFC's last show, he would have had a really hard time keeping it together and getting through the last song.
I know how much I dislike things about modern Pearl Jam (Eddie’s onstage chit chat, Klinghoffer being there). It’s entirely possible a band member feels the same way, and quits.
Maybe, or maybe like so many other people in their 60s, the guy just wants to retire.
Yea... my money is on the new Soundgarden material. If he was retiring this message would've been a retirement announcement. I guess its possible he could be the new Foo Fighters drummer... Seems like a weird fit but sure.
I would not prefer Josh K on drums... I think I would want someone who is mostly known for drums. Josh is more a jack of all trades.

I highly doubt this is "the end." If it was EV for sure, any of the others probably. I would love to see them bury the hatchet and bring back Abbruzzese!
Thank you Matt!!! Wishing you all the best. I started going to PJ shows 27 years ago and have only seen Matt drum.

Zero question the band continues because why would they go to the trouble to announce this and not the end of the band? I agree with whoever said this was probably in the works for a while. It’s sad for sure as I feel his imprint on the band is irreplaceable, but I am excited to see what direction they go in at the same time.
Why not celebrate his last gig on the last day of the tour? Why wait?

Also, if this was ogoing to lead to the end of the band wouldn't they just announce the band was done now?
Would they bring back Krusen? Seems they've maintained a good relationship with him, and he may still be up for touring...
