Thank you, Matt!
Also, if this was ogoing to lead to the end of the band wouldn't they just announce the band was done now? This show, another show, a show here and a show there.0 -
Ugh this is brutal. He was perfect for the band. I only saw one show in '96 with Jack, so Matt has always felt like the THE drummer.
Would they bring back Krusen? Seems they've maintained a good relationship with him, and he may still be up for touring...
I just hope its not done.Randall's Island, NY 9/29/1996, Randall's Island, NY 6/8/1997 (Ed and Mike), Jones Beach, NY 8/23/2000, Los Angeles, CA 7/10/2006, Hartford, CT 6/27/2008, Los Angeles, CA 10/6/2009, San Diego, CA 11/21/2013, Los Angeles, CA 11/24/2013, MSG, NY 5/1/2016, Seattle, WA 8/10/2018, Los Angeles, CA 5/6/2022, Los Angeles, CA 5/7/2022, Camden, NJ 9/14/2022, St Paul 8/31/2023, St Paul 9/2/2023, Las Vegas 5/18/24, MSG NY 9/3/24, Philadelphia PA 9/9/24, Ohana CA 9/27/24, Atlanta, GA 4/29/25, Pittsburgh, PA 5/16/25, Pittsburgh, PA 5/18/250 -
Sad news indeed, MFC is an absolute monster on the kit but I agree with others on here saying they'll continue. They wouldn't make this sort of announcement for one person leaving if the whole thing was over. Hindsight being 20/20, sort of saw this coming when Stone was asked about the shorter setlists post covid and he said something about Ed's voice and how the longer shows affect Matt physically. I was lucky enough to meet him after Soundgarden's show at The Palladium in Worcester 2013, I was able to get a drumstick, he signed it for me, I could be barely talk since I was completely star struck, he was cool, realized I was in shock and was very nice. I've been very lucky to meet many of my rock heroes, normally I'm relaxed but he was one of the few that made me check my underwear afterwards.
On a personal note though, you hear Matt on Soundgarden albums then on PJ albums, sometimes I think they never used him to his maximum/full capabilities. I understand they're two different bands but my gut tells me they didn't fully utilize him as they could/should. I love his song, "Get It Back", one of the best PJ songs, feels like the younger sibling to Present Tense, sort of has a new meaning now. He'll be sorely missed but the band will go on, at their age, they're not going to tour that much anyways.
Josh stepping in makes complete sense and with enough time, he'll be able to learn all the material, he's so talented. The Foos haven't officially announced a new drummer, I wonder if Grohl made an offer he couldn't refuse especially if PJ doesn't plan on touring in the foreseeable future. Matt recently mentioned on Drumeo, albeit in a joking manner that drumming for PJ and Soundgarden at the same time was tough and wasn't the wisest decision, if he ends up being the drummer for the Foos, maybe he doesn't want to deal with that but who knows. Hopefully more info will be available as time goes on.Tweeter Center - Aug 29, 2000;Tweeter Center - Aug 30, 2000;Allstate Arena - Oct 09, 2000;Pepsi Arena - Apr 29, 2003;Bryce-Jordan Center - May 03, 2003;Bell Center - Jun 29, 2003;Tweeter Center - Jul 02, 2003;Tweeter Center - Jul 03, 2003;Tweeter Center - Jul 11, 2003;Tweeter Center at the Waterfront - Jul 05, 2003;Tweeter Center at the Waterfront - Jul 06, 2003;Madison Square Garden - Jul 08, 2003;Madison Square Garden - Jul 09, 2003;TD Banknorth Garden - May 24, 2006;TD Banknorth Garden - May 25, 2006;Fleet Center - Sept 28, 2004;Fleet Center - Sept 29, 2004;Pepsi Arena - May 12, 2006 New England Dodge Music Arena - May 13, 2006;Grant Park - Aug 05, 2007;Bonnaroo - Jun 14, 2008;Dodge Music Center - Jun 27, 2008;Tweeter Center - Jun 28, 2008;Tweeter Center - Jun 30, 2008 XL Arena - May 15, 2010;TD Garden - May 17, 2010;Alpine Valley Music Theatre - Sept 03, 2011;Alpine Valley Music Theatre - Sep 04, 2011 Corel Centre - Sep 16, 2005;Colisee Pepsi Arena - Sep 20, 2005; Wrigley Field - July 19, 2013; DCU Center - Oct 15, 2013; DCU Center - Oct 16, 2013; Fenway Park - August 5, 2016; Fenway Park - August 7, 2016

JedBert said:Became a PJ fan right before Matt joined for the '98 tour so he's the only drummer I've ever "known" and this feels a little heartbreaking. Love you Matt! I hope you have an amazing time with whatever comes next.
LO2L was the first PJ album that I bought and Elderly Woman (from that one) was the song that got me hooked, although I was aware of Alive and Immortality on the radio before that. I was merely a teen when I bought LO2L so yeah, I wasn't paying too much attention to things like that, I guess.Presidential Advice from President-Elect Mike McCready: "Are you getting something out of this all encompassing trip?"0 -

Mike & Matt's wives were hanging side stage together at Nashville 2, and Ed gave them a shout out & some words of appreciation... it seemed *a little* odd at the time... in hindsight, it doesn't seem odd at all.0

I remember when he join the band thinking it was a perfect full circle moment. From recording the Stone Gossard Demos to the Dark Matter tour, Matt is one of my favourite drummers. Thanks for everything. Hoping to see the next chapter of Pearl Jam.

The wording of the announcement made me think that he is moving on to something else. If he was just retiring he would've said so. Saying that more is to come means he is waiting to make some sort of announcement. Could Soundgarden be reforming with a new singer? I don't know about the Foo Fighters given his comments after Taylor's death that he then had to walk back. Maybe something totally new?

I am afraid this not just the end of Matt, but of the band's live shows. How do you replace Matt Cameron? Answer: you don't. Anything else will feel contrived. That's just me.0

Thank you MFC! For all the years of rubbery arms after shows because of the air drumming. You will be missed! Take care of yourself!0

They planned an indefinite hiatus after the best 12 months they've had in at least 9 years... I think they've known about Matt's planned departure for a lot longer than anyone is considering.
