Thanks Matt, thanks for everything you've done. Enjoy your next endeavor, whatever it might be. MF*C every time you stepped on stage you gave it everything... and we took in and we loved it. We can't thank you enough.
Wow - amazing contributions to the band - wishing Matt all the best. At this stage of their lives and careers you never want to hear news like this - it can be really disruptive for any future plans the band may have been discussing - it opens the doors for others to evaluate their future now as well, truly hope this is not the case with this band. I for one am not ready for coming to terms with the fact that my absolute favorite band may one day stop playing - we have been so spoiled by this amazing group of guys and their gift of music to us all.
I have a feeling this was in the works for a while, and the band has been planning for it. I have no insight other than my own intuition, but the timing of this announcement, 6 weeks after they wrapped their most extensive year of touring in some time, with no plans on the horizon... I think they've known about and were planning for this for some time.
Maybe. Did they play any of the songs MC actually wrote though on this last run? Neither The Fixer nor Dance of the Clairvoyants are the two I most associate with him, and neither was played.
Matt Thank you so much for all the memories over the years. I am grateful that I got a chance to see Pearl Jam with you powering the engine. I have so many memories from all the shows that make me smile. Life is truly a gift and when you get to spend time doing what you love and are amazing at, it is icing on the cake. Enjoy the next chapter whatever it is. To the rest of the band. Keep on Rocking in the Free World.

Matt is a legend and his playing on his albums cannot be replaced.
I'm not a religious man but I'm praying that in time, after the band processes the next step forward if they choose to continue, that a John Hoffman/Primus scenario could happen.
I loved Krusen's playing and it shaped my early playing, I loved Abbruzzese's playing and worked his cymbal style into mine, I love Jack's style and it helped form my snare style, I loved Matt's pulsing tempo/fills and he's legend.
This band is beyond words and although I'm almost certain the drumming will go to a familiar face already in the industry, I sure hope a lucky dreamer out of a pool of people like me could have a chance to play and create with a generation-changing band doing the current songs justice, and creating a new chapter in a fun direction.
Well, he is 62. Drumming takes a lot of energy. He is most likely financially secure. Now he is onto the most important phase of life ... morning crossword puzzles and senior discounts at the Waffle House.
And yet.. there's Mighty Max Weinberg ... much older, still going. We many never know all Matt's reasons and that's OK

And Mickey Hart from the Grateful Dead. He’s in his 80s and still plays Drums/Space like a man 30 years his junior. It’s amazing to watch.
I have no doubt that they've known about this for some time. Outside of a medical condition developing, I can't envision after 27 years that Matt didn't give them plenty of notice about his plans.
I really hope this ISN'T health related, and that MFC can put his feet up and enjoy life. The guy has given me so many great memories and will forever be a top 5 favorite drummer of mine.
I know how much I dislike things about modern Pearl Jam (Eddie’s onstage chit chat, Klinghoffer being there). It’s entirely possible a band member feels the same way, and quits.
Inevitable that some insufferable dumbshit goes here - I'll help you out so we can shut this down now. Try singing with all your effort for say...10 minutes. Now try 30. Oh, your little throat is sore? Now go for 2.5+ hours and do it every night or other night for two months. Insufferable nonsense. Please be more like Matt and leave this conversation with some fucking grace.
Became a PJ fan right before Matt joined for the '98 tour so he's the only drummer I've ever "known" and this feels a little heartbreaking. Love you Matt! I hope you have an amazing time with whatever comes next.
Matt is/was the greatest PJ drummer. Still my favorite.
Soundgarden is working on new music. Some from demo's. But maybe some new new music, meaning possible fill-ins and one off's? He's in his 60's, so splitting time between two legendary bands is probably hard. Maybe he figures by the time the Soundgarden stuff is done he'll be too old to continue.
We all gotta face it. We're all getting old. Including the band.

Yeah maybe a final tour or two to officially put the bow on Soundgarden before he officially hangs it up.
That's what a friend is guessing.
Presidential Advice from President-Elect Mike McCready: "Are you getting something out of this all encompassing trip?"

Maybe, or maybe like so many other people in their 60s, the guy just wants to retire.
yeah I don't think there is anything to read into this other than Matt is ready to take it easy...

27 years (plus more with Soundgarden) is a long time to be doing anything, especially being on tour so much.
I hope there's still time for the band left. Metallica has been touring since the 80s, although they've had a few different bassists.
Oh yeah, look at that. They totally knew.
One legend to another. I wonder if they knew.
