Wow - amazing contributions to the band - wishing Matt all the best. At this stage of their lives and careers you never want to hear news like this - it can be really disruptive for any future plans the band may have been discussing - it opens the doors for others to evaluate their future now as well, truly hope this is not the case with this band. I for one am not ready for coming to terms with the fact that my absolute favorite band may one day stop playing - we have been so spoiled by this amazing group of guys and their gift of music to us all.
I have a feeling this was in the works for a while, and the band has been planning for it. I have no insight other than my own intuition, but the timing of this announcement, 6 weeks after they wrapped their most extensive year of touring in some time, with no plans on the horizon... I think they've known about and were planning for this for some time.

Agreed. Ed alluded to this several times at Wrigley II this summer. Made several comments like you never know when it could be the last time we are here, etc.

I know how much I dislike things about modern Pearl Jam (Eddie’s onstage chit chat, Klinghoffer being there). It’s entirely possible a band member feels the same way, and quits.
Maybe, or maybe like so many other people in their 60s, the guy just wants to retire.
Much respect and love to Matt Cameron. His creative presence was a huge part of the band's sound/songs since 98. Matt Cameron is the MVP of Dark Matter, which featured some of his best drumming of his career. Hope he finds happiness and fulfillment in his next endeavours...
Matt Cameron - one of the greatest drummers of all time! (..and human being) He gave his all every show! Thank you!

Didn't see this coming. Matt is a rock and I thank him for keeping our band rocking for like 27 years. Nervous for the future. But also hopeful. From Ed's banter during the last tour I definitely think they keep going forward. This Monday was already a slog after a long weekend, so I guess they picked a good day to announce.

Well Wishes to Matt and The Band. Though, I haven't been to a show yet and am bummed that I won't get to see Matt with the Band, when I am able to go. I was hoping to go for the next tour.
this maybe fills in some blanks around the various comments Ed was making at several DM shows like 'don't know when we'll be able to this again' etc...

yeah I don't think there is anything to read into this other than Matt is ready to take it easy...

This could be the start of the end. How to get someone to replace him eho is able to learn all those songs and play anyone at the drop of Eddie's hat.
I would rather this be the end than move forward and end it sloppily as so many bands do! As I said in another thread, I think it'd be cool to bring in a former "Jamily" member (man that's lame Krusen, Abbruzzese, Irons? Do another album with one of those guys. As for touring, I just don't want to see it. I don't want to go watch a new guy up there.
This band has so much more to say. Matt has earned the right to walk away. Seemed to be the man to keep them in check. A huge influence on the other 4. All the best matt.
