    President Donald Trump repeated some familiar claims about Ukraine on Friday during a remarkably combative Oval Office meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Here is a fact check of two of his assertions.

    US wartime aid to Ukraine: Trump, appearing to refer to former President Joe Biden, told Zelensky: “We gave you, through the stupid president, $350 billion.”

    Trump’s $350 billion figure is not close to correct.

    According to the Kiel Institute for the World Economy, a German think tank that closely tracks wartime aid to Ukraine, the US committed a total of about $125 billion in wartime military, financial and humanitarian aid to Ukraine from late January 2022 through December 2024. The US had actually allocated about $120 billion of that total.

    It’s possible to arrive at different totals using different counting methodologies, but there is, regardless, no apparent basis for the “$350 billion” figure Trump has regularly used. The US government inspector general overseeing the Ukraine response says on its website that the US had appropriated about $183 billion for the Ukraine response through December 2024, including about $83 billion actually disbursed — and that includes funding spent in the US or sent to countries other than Ukraine.

    I took it as Zelensky trying to express, before he was shouted over, that the US will feel the pain of Ukraine losing its war against Putin on the ritz and that the distance of having oceans between the US and the rest of the world won’t matter. He’s right. The US is going to feel the effects but COOTWH didn’t want to hear it because he’s a tough guy and nobody tells him how it’s going to be.

    That's exactly what he meant. I mean no offense but how is one of your first thoughts to worry about having any kind of jingoism about threats towards the US? The guy's saying it's easy to act tough with a large ocean in between us and Russia. It's like the "first they came for those who don't look like me" routine.

    Semi-related: just fucking wild and how much sheep the R's are in their polls of their dislike of Zolensky. They have swung from roughly net zero approval to net negative 25 points flavorability of him (all because of Trump's stance).

    I interpreted that comment as sort of saying, your concerns are different than ours because you have an ocean between you and your enemies.  I'm sure English is his 3rd/4th language so it didn't come out as well as it could have.
