I think part of the problem is the slow death of rock music in the mainstream. There are very few successful new rock acts over the past 10 years or so… Most bands that qualify as rock headliners for festivals now are “legacy acts” - and I’m not just talking about PJ, Metallica, Radiohead or RHCP who’ve been around for 30+ years, I would also include the likes of Foo Fighters, Blink-182, The Killers, Jack White and Linkin Park in that…

pdalowsky said:drfox said:YourDirtisMyfood said:DMB, Fall Out Boy and Luke Combs are your headliners.Well that's the thing. How would it have looked 30 years ago seeing large swaths of middle age folks at a Lollapalooza? Outside of the occasionally night or Jazzfest people my age aren't the target demo for these festivals.Personally I'm not a fan of how these things have morphed over the years. We use to have a main stage and a side staff. Then they started having two main stages which was fine because the mains weren't concurrent. There are still a few still like this but a lot of the biggest ones have three, four, of five stages. You are always forced to pick and choose and then fight the crowds. Now I'm going to brave the cold and yell at clouds.

Probably ten years ago or so I remember sitting around with some of my family and we were asking our nieces and nephews (early teens at the time) who was "their voice" -- the musician or act that they felt spoke for their generation. And the answers were interesting because they kept saying things like Green Day, RHCP, etc and I had to keep telling them in my grumpy uncle voice that nope those were mine.
Part of it is the destruction of the music industry -- while it has opened doors for people who otherwise would not have ever had a chance, it has also eliminated that support system for talented acts. There really was something magical about a young and talented group getting a record deal with a major label, allowing them the room to focus solely on music for the next several months as they toured and recorded. Yes, there were some nefarious components of this model as well -- with the label attempting to "mold" that next record into something profitable for them. Bands like PJ were able to largely reject that noise but others weren't as good at it or didn't have the leverage.
All that to say, it's no surprise we don't see a lot of 10-15 year old acts still at the top of their game. ANY business staying around longer than ten years is a big win, but the music industry is especially near-sighted in its current form. What's the next shiny thing?

I think you don't have overnight rock band success stories because there are so many different avenues for discovering new rock music now. It's not like the old days when we were all listening to FM rock stations and hearing basically the same stuff. It's a slower build now. As a result you have bands like Ghost and Goose playing arenas. King Gizzard is getting close. Just to name a couple.0

I remember torturing with RATM vividly.
Some of the utter dross out there today, stuff I am sure is championed to our kids on tiktok and the likes, genuinely hurts my head and senses and I do wonder if ive just gone full circle.
The thing is the way music is enjoyed has changed dramatically. Kids don't even consume music in full songs anymore, nevermind albums, its all 30-40 second snippets ......its all doomedPost edited by pdalowsky on0 -

I get they're solo artists, but I do wonder what makes them able to have such success in the same industry landscape whilst bands seem to struggle to break through in the same way with the younger generation.0
