Why does everything have to be judged by live performances? Why can't you just enjoy it for what it is, which is one of their best songs from this part of their career. And yeah, I'm going to give Upper Hand and WFS a chance. Upper Hand sounds cool.

How are people declaring songs that they've heard twice the best or worst of the band's decades-long career? How does anyone have an opinion stronger than "I dig it" or "It didn't grab me at first listen" about any of these songs at this point?

Not their best, "Leash" rubbed that out 31 years ago. It just has a lot of elements that make it an accomplished song. It sounds like one made by an experienced band. It's good.

Yes, "it's good" is a perfectly reasonable reaction to a song you just heard for the first or second time. So is "it didn't really grab me."But there are in fact people making sweeping declarations, for good and for bad, about the quality of these songs and their place within the overall Pearl Jam catalog. That seems premature.

It is. It just stood out to me. I didn't love the singles, so it instilled some hope in me. I guess it was a bit premature to post that. It is better than most of what's on Gigaton, am I right?

I love Gigaton so that's a high bar. But my point is that I would never make a sweeping statement like "these songs are better than their last album" after two listens. I've listened to Gigaton hundreds of times. I have a well-established sense of that album's merits. What I can tell you is that, having listened to "Dark Matter" and "Running" dozens of times, I'm really into them. Having heard everything else either twice or, in the case of "Wreckage," four times, all I can say is that I like what I've heard, but it will take much more time and attention to these songs to have a strong opinion about them.

I think we've got a lot of Jeff Albertsons in the Ten Club.

Love the Upper Hand - Waiting for Stevie - Running section of the album. 

Not sure why everyone gets so angry.  Music is very personal and very subjective.  

waiting for stevie.....holy shit.  I absolutely love how sounds on this one. the solo at the end.....whoa.

because pj is known for their live shows.  If it doesn't translate live, then it doesn't get played and gets retired.  (hello getaway)

Given how few cities they play anymore there are certainly lots of people for whom the album version is all they’ll ever hear though. Not every fan goes to shows.
