Gonna take awhile for me to answer this, in large part because there are several contenders.

i cant really choose one to be honest.

    the album is THAT good.

only one that hasnt clicked yet is react, respond(the chorus is very weird) all other ones are amazing and yes including something special
    Same here.

After this incredible 5 song stretch with Dark Matter, Won‘t Tell, Upper Hand, Waiting and Running, I need to hear some relaxing Country. :-)

Won't Tell is awesome. Early leader for me.

Oh man, the end of React, Respond in headphones. Mike's solo swirling ear to ear, unreal.

React, Respond didn't click until I heard it on headphones. Great Mccready part makes the song.

    Waiting For Stevie
It's hard to believe we have a band 34 years and 12 albums in that they can produce a record as strong as this.  There is something in all the songs to grab hold of and listen to which is very rare

My opinion is it is their best-paced record in years (I felt some post 2006 have died a little towards the end) and it is incredibly strong start to finish.

    Waiting For Stevie
Just like Quick Escape was the clear cut 'special' song for me on Gigaton, Waiting for Stevie is 'special' for me on Dark Matter.  Great album!  They're 12 for 12!

    React, Respond
Won't Tell and Got To Give are definitely getting a lot more of a minimal response than I expected
My vote is for React, Respond...but Got to Give is rock solid, great tune.

    Setting Sun
Poll shows Setting Sun rightly up there - it builds up to a decent track unlike some of the Vedder strummers on the boring side of Gigaton.

    React, Respond
I need to change my selection!  haha.  At first listen in a record store, I picked React, Respond.   I still love it. But it might be the weakest track on here, and like I said....I still love it.

This album simply has too many good songs at the moment to pick just one.

Dark Matter the song is my favorite. Nothing else stood out to me on first listen. Will give it another go today.
  • Running
I may have answered this too quickly before digesting the album. I love Jeff's punkiness, so I went with Running. It does remind me of a Backspacer track. Which I dig. But I need more time.
new album "Cigarettes" out Spring 2025!

Funny to hear Jeff say that he wouldn't have gotten away with playing his 12-string on studio albums these days, but Watt said "Why? Just play it". Mike also seems to be unleashed and not stifled.

Watt will have detractors for perhaps production reasons, but he should be praised for encouraging spontaneity and capturing the band's musical instincts which are still firing, based on this record.
I've heard similar comments. And that BO'B wouldn't let him use his fretless on VS except for on Leash because it was an older song.
I'm not a musician, so I don't get it. What's the drawback from using 12 string or fretless bass on an album?

This song hit like a ton of bricks on the first listen and it just keeps on coming through with every listen.
Honestly after the train wreck that was Gigaton, this whole album is amazing. There are only two songs at this point that I'm not super stoked on and that's Something Special and Setting Sun.
Anything you lose from being honest
You never really had to begin with.

Sometimes it's not the song that makes you emotional it's the people and things that come to your mind when you hear it.
  • "Waiting for Stevie", is the 1st song that immediately jumped out, and I loved in 1 listen. "Running" after a couple listens I love as well. The album as a whole sounds great. I am sure multiple songs will become favorites after more listening and lyric breakdown. We all have our PJ biases and fandom, but the beautiful aspect of music is the subjectivity. How deeply personal any individual song can be interpreted, loved or hated, is the art of music both with creating it and listening to it. It is a great day for PJ fans. Cheers!
