Josh just had something too on his Instragram if him in one of those Hyperbolic chambers saying something like ‘better faster stronger’ and people think it’s him prepping for the Foo tour….take that for what it’s worth!

Take it from a drummer and music fan... As far as skills go... Josh Freese is arguably one of the best alternative rock drummers in the world. Could be the most underrated. The only drummer to come close to the level of skill and musicianship in this musical genre is Matt Cameron. IMO Josh Freese makes a ton of sense to play with the Foos. All others mentioned either don't have the skills or like Matt are taken.

Here are my personal top 11 most skilled modern, alternative, and progressive rock drummers in the past 30 years and in no particular order:

    Matt Cameron
    Josh Freese
    Jimmy Chamberlin
    Danny Carey
    Dominic Howard
    Dave Grohl
    Jon Theodore
    Dave Abruzzese
    Chad Smith
    Travis Barker
    Taylor Hawkins

100% agree on Freese… I like your list, but personally would have included John Stanier and Danny Heifetz.

Agreed. Dave wouldn’t sniff my list, but to each his own.

I think it’s pretty awesome how they’ve kept the drummer role a secret up until now. I’ll be surprised if it doesn’t get out before they take the stage in NH, but who knows.

I'm no expert on drummers, but at the Taylor Hawkins Tribute in LA, I was the most impressed with Josh Freese. The combination of physicality and skill made him really stand out for me, among the long list of rotating drummers that night. (I was already familiar and impressed with Matt and Stewart Copeland).

I'm assuming that Grohl plays the drum tracks on the new Foos album. Definitely interested to see who they hire as their touring drummer, even though I'm not a Foos fan whatsoever.

Jimmy Chamberlin is the best rock drummer since Bonham and nobody can change my mind. He’s absolutely unbelievable.

Brandon Pertzborn just got named as the new Offspring drummer. Frees up Josh even more.

For those interested in alternative rock drum wankery Gavin Harrison from Porcupine Tree is goddamn ridiculous and should be on anyone's list.

Chamberlain is so good that he looks positively bored out of his mind while playing incredible drum parts

Am I correct in my recollection that the excessive drinking was one of the reasons they took a break in '02 when Dave did QOTSA?

Maybe I imagined it, but I seem to recall hearing Dave say in an interview about those days that one shot before taking the stage became several shots and then the whole bottle.

I could be way off though.
That was true.it was a bottle a night.
