Rep. Katie Porter seeking Feinstein's Senate seat in 2024
    24 mins ago

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Democratic Rep. Katie Porter of California said Tuesday she will seek the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Sen. Dianne Feinstein, a fellow Democrat and the oldest member of the chamber.

“Especially in times like these, California needs a warrior in Washington," Porter said in a video posted on Twitter. “That's exactly why I'm announcing my candidacy for the United States Senate in 2024.”

Porter, who was first elected to Congress in 2018, said she has “challenged the status quo" in Washington, taking on “big banks,” Wall Street and the pharmaceutical industry. She wants to ban members of Congress from stock trading.

“To win these fights, it's time for new leadership in the U.S. Senate," she said.

Feinstein, 89, has faced questions about her age and memory and whether she will seek another term. She has not announced whether she will seek reelection in 2024.

Feinstein won her sixth election in 2018 and has been a force for Democrats, serving for a time as chair of the intelligence and judiciary committees. But she also has seen pushback from Democrats who view her as too bipartisan at a time when politics is more polarized and her state is increasingly liberal.

In 2020, Feinstein announced she would step down as the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee. The move followed criticism that she was too friendly with Republicans during confirmation hearings for Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett. That included an embrace of the Republican Chairman, Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, at the conclusion of the hearings and kind words for what she called a job well done.

Feinstein has defended her performance and said in 2021 that she planned to serve her full term, even as there was open speculation and discussion about the future of the seat. Gov. Gavin Newson said in 2021 that he would appoint a Black woman to replace Feinstein, who's white, if she were to retire early.

Serving in the senate is semi-retirement. The number of days in session has gotten to be fewer and fewer over the years and the pay and health/retirement benefits are stellar. You’d manage just fine, even with the senior centre visits and shovel turning photo ops, I’m sure.

That's how I feel. She seems extremely good at being moderate and pragmatic. You hear loud voices from the AOCs and the MTGs, so it'd be great to see more outspoken folks who don't come from the extremes of the parties such as Porter.

Right. The only time I root for the AOC’s is when they go up against the MTG’s. I’ve found a happy medium  in the middle.

Depends on what those loud voices are saying. One speaks for the marginalized and underserved. The other speaks for conspiracy theorists and insurrectionists.

If we're talking about the quality of current loud voices in terms of the nobility of the pursuits, I agree with you.

For me, the larger concern is the ability of government to actually make progress. When the extremes of a party are the most vocal and opinionated, it's not a good starting point from the perspectives of negotiations or concessions. If there was a smattering of loud centrists within the parties, I think party dynamics could change for the better, and the likelihood of reaching productive solutions could increase.

PS - I know I'm misusing the term 'centrist' here', but I'm not articulate enough to find one singular word to define 'positioned on the political spectrum in the average spot for the party, as opposed to near the fringes'.

maybe not centrist but in the center
Yes, but the center of the party's spectrum range, rather than the overall spectrum (if that makes sense).

AOC gas stove comment was a really bad attempt at a joke.  #1 not funny.  #2 just dumb.  But when you try to be funny you don't bat 100%.

I don’t want to commit to being a big fan, but as a casual observer, I’ve always liked her. I have seen her during some congressional hearings here & there, and other interviews. Always thought she is very smart and relatable. She seems pretty down to earth, so I’m down!

I really wish people wouldn’t put AOC as the dem version of the right wing extremists in the republican party. It diminishes the threat the republicans have become.

That's not really the point Hi and I are discussing - we're talking about how much better it is when moderate voices speak loudly compared to when the extremes are the only high-volume members.

They get media attention, and I’d argue it’s beneficial for the future of the dem party for this to happen. Moderate dems are too conservative and don’t represent enough of the population, in particular younger people. So having more liberal views represented in the party is going to help younger voter turnout.

May be a push factor for some, but a pull factor for some - and almost always a bad place to start a negotiation. In a polarized environment like this where the two parties either have a slim minority or a slim majority, that's a serious net negative in the interest of getting shit done.

That’s only the case if the people in the party can’t compromise. The dems have an advantage in this area because they’re way more policy centered. Republicans become even more dysfunctional because their platform is emotion based culture war stupidity and there isn’t anything there to negotiate with.

Exactly right....they support nothing. I'm interested to see how they frame this balanced budget amendment.

They know it's dead in the water but they trot it out each time they get in power. The closest we ever come to a balanced budget is when a Dem is in office. This is historical fact.

Imagine that this amendment actually passes...then imagine the next GOP president having to deal with a budget that cuts enough spending (would have to be defense spending) in order to balance the budget...UNLESS they raise taxes....that would be a glorious situation for the GOP.

The balanced budget sounds great but it won't work without tax increases on a yearly basis.
