*** LA NIGHT 1 2022 SETLIST THREAD ***

Imagine having the ability to by tickets to 6 Pearl Jam shows on a run, but don't bother going because you want them to play a few more songs each night.Come to send, not condescend...0

Why should we have expected this, when that hasn't been the case for many years?ClownofThorns said:
I think plenty of us expected this.BW285110 said:Show seemed very short. Incomplete. Ed talks a lot . Takes up a lot of time and sort of makes the show slow paced. The last LA arena show in 2013 was 33 songs. Obviously a huge difference. The last few years shows had that Springsteen can’t go one more minute vide. This wasn’t that at all. I have tix for 5 more shows. Most of those I won’t go to.They are still tremendous players and Ed is a super engaging front man. But this was a different thing than any of us expected. It’s a good quality show put in by a top notch live band. But not “holy cow” great like it’s been since 2003.Hopefully the shows will get longer as the tour continues. Maybe starting tomorrow. But don’t kid yourself. 22 songs is a disappointment.
Can't really blame it on the opener either, because the last PJ show I went to with an opener, we still got 31 songs.0 -

Or they could add 5+ of their songs. It's not a requirement to play covers or to play 30 songs. But they have enough in their catalog to make up for itJK109224 said:Essentially the band have removed the 5+ sloppy repetitive covers from their shows and we have a tight Pearl Jam setlist, performed well.
I've been hoping for this for some years now. Long may it continue.
Theorizing tonight for me - Eddie, most importantly his vocal chords, are not getting younger, I am imagining part of it is him wanting at this point to make sure he can be "on" vocally all the way through and not run out of vocal gas. I am sure PJ didn't do it just to get back to their hotels early, in that sense - they don't seem the type to do that. But if trimming the fat, so to speak, helps deliver the quality, I am totally cool with it - tonight kicked absolute butt!

I don’t think the days of longer sets are necessarily a thing of the past, I just think everyone needs to realize this tour isn’t an “Evening with PJ” format. When there’s no opening band, they can come on earlier and play a longer set with multiple encores. But when there’s an opener, there’s just not enough time for them to play 30+ song sets. It’s as simple as that.I think most shows will be 22-24 songs on average with maybe 2-3 stops on the tour getting a 26-27 song set.0

I‘ve seen at least one interview with Mike where he said he‘s hoping for shorter shows because he‘s getting older but especially Ed was pushing them for more songs.BW285110 said:

That was actually at the Los Angeles Sports Arena, which no longer exists.GratefulJam said:Much different vibe then one time they weee there and Ed mentioned something about Dick Cheney’s rectum on the ceiling 🤣I gather speed from you fucking with me.0 -
Or maybe just not wanting to put forward the expense and time from work because the show wasn’t as super special as I had expected and perhaps not worth it. I would try and sell the tix. It’s not like I can’t be bothered to go. Still hoping that the shows lengthen as the tour progresses.JK109224 said:Imagine having the ability to by tickets to 6 Pearl Jam shows on a run, but don't bother going because you want them to play a few more songs each night.0 -
Even though this is a pretty unlikely explanation for the truncated sets, it is plausible that the shorter setlists are because of the band's Covid community spread concerns, since these shows are indoors, Ba2 subvariant cases are on the rise, and most/all of the mandates have been dropped.teflonsteve said:

I know the SD and LA1 setlists are only ~45 minutes less than the show lengths they were routinely playing on previous headlining tours, but maybe this might have something to do with it?
Anyway, just throwing the idea out there, as far-fetched as it may be. I am hoping for another Ohana Encore in the Fall and for PJ to headline at least one if its two nights. Enjoy the Spring leg for all of you attending!0 -
This is pure speculation on my part but I think some fans are disappointed with the number of songs because they don't care too much about the Gigaton songs + the big hits that get played for the casual folks. If you combine these two (7 Gigaton + 5 big hits), you are only left with 10 songs. I think that is disappointing some fans. I am going to 2 Oakland shows. I am most excited about hearing Gigaton live. I also want to just see the band perform. It has been too long.

No it was the Forum in 2006, the last time they played that venue.BF25394 said:

There have been openers for many years. The norm became for PJ to routinely pay the fine and play well past curfew.Red Mosqito said:I don’t think the days of longer sets are necessarily a thing of the past, I just think everyone needs to realize this tour isn’t an “Evening with PJ” format. I rbi k it has to do with Ed singing again in 24 hours.igotid88 said:
Obviously they still put on a great show. Part of it is just a humble brag when comparing to other bands.ForceofNature101 said:Just got back from the show, honestly the setlist number count is just a visual - the show was great and feels plenty "complete" when there for sure! I wonder if it's something serious. They played 20 minutes less than in San Diego. Sorry that’s positively ridiculous. Omicron spreads like wild fire. If they were that worried about it, they wouldn’t be playing indoors. Bringing people together for 3 hours or 4 hours is irrelevant to the spread of COVID. An infected person in that building has spread it within the first 15-20 minutes.SS49057 said:

The Gigaton songs seem to be DOA live on a proper tour based on the crowd reactions tonight. Wonder if SD crowd was like this. Will see if it changes tomorrow and in Phoenix
The weird part is they sound GREAT musically and the lyrics are the weak points. Not understanding or knowing any of the words doesn't help I think.
Outside of my msg and st. Louis shows glad I'm not too invested in the fall run.
Hopefully MSG gets the proper show treatment on 9/11.0 -
SBWM,DoC, Quick Escape were well received. It's embarrassing
this song is meant to be called i got shit, itshould be called i got shit tickets-hartford 06 -0 -
Anyone attending these shows and not expecting a set list filled with Gigaton songs doesn't know PJ. This is the first opportunity they have had to play that release live. Bring it on. If you didn't see this coming and didn't enjoy it, sorry for you. You went to the wrong show. It is the same playlist had it been 2020 when Gigaton was released. If you're not familiar with the lyrics, again sorry for you. You went to the wrong show.Don't come closer or I'll have to go0
-
I don't mind Gigaton I just like a set with maybe 5 to 6 more songs than this so we can get some deeper gems in there and cover more of the albums.. I was at SD and tonight.. This was definitely the better of the two so far.0
