As opposed to a much more serious problem of gun violence. Seriously, how difficult of a problem is it to address? Here’s a few suggestions for the retailers: lock your shit up at night and use cable locks during store hours; use knock offs for display purposes; put exploding dye packs or GPS tags in or on the merch; use revolving doors for entrances with manual push button locks; hire a cop on overtime to stand at the entrance. My low crime city has a cop at the exit to the Whole Foods. Why? No idea but he or she is there 7 days a week during opening hours, 7-10.

You’ll never eliminate criminals and criminality. Unless you elect Deathsantis as POTUS.

What laws went into effect that lead to this problem? How many of these smash n grab robberies have occurred? 5, 10 or 100s or 1,000s?

Property crime costs everyone in society. retailers pass the cost of theft on to customers... it's in all our best interest to want less property crime...of course easy for me to say. I live in a no-crime small town in which I could leave my door unlocked and come home and all would be fine...

But not all businesses pass along those costs. Some have to eat it. Some small businesses (like used bookstores) already have a hard time making a go of it. If we raise our prices because someone steals books from us (and it does happen more than I care to think about) people will stop buying from us. It's already hard enough to compete with big on-line conglomerates (like You-Know-Who, or, as we refer to them, "The Evil One", lol).

Those are valid points. Any cost increase to small businesses is detrimental to the owners...less wiggle room. I worked with a fellow a few years ago and his brother-in-law owned a variety store that he closed because he could no longer get insurance to cover break-ins...he had numerous break-ins over the years...

LOL, move on indeed! I'm laughing because I'm at this tipping point with wanting to keep doing my little book and record business and at the same time very much wanting to move on and get out of it. After 38 year in the business, my wife got to that same point this year and got out of it. She's plenty busy doing other thing AND happier. Smart lady!

I remember one in high school or university, a teacher/professor talked about how police work because it makes the populous feel like there's a reasonable chance of being caught and punished for committing a crime. Police don't have the manpower to enforce things, so they enforce them just enough that people feel this way.

I'm not sure how it is in the US, but in Canada it seems like all the police efforts pretty much go into having to deal with the fallout of the homeless/mental health/drug addicted problems. Not much left for anything else. Even then because the federal government passed laws on how long you can detain someone, the courts let them back out, and the police have to go arrest them again the same day.

There's less and less police power to enforce anything else.

It probably doesn't help that there's something like a million things that are illegal. No chance of enforcing all of it. lol.

Haha! When I was a kid, my buddies and I stole from freaking Kmart, man.

We also used to take trips to the mall every weekend and have a contest on who could steal the most shit.

We had four area malls, so we could rotate as we got bored as well.

We kept none to very little of of our haul. It was just for kicks. I mean, we had to ditch it. How would we explain to our parents huge shopping bags filled with merchandise they know we had no means to pay for?

I'm not proud of it or anything; it was just something to do while we waited for our drug dealer to show up.

At any rate, I'm wondering if some of these incidents are the same -- that is to say, basically driven more by peer pressure and crushing ennui than any real malice.
