(I would also argue that for some, cashiering is a job they enjoy and are happy to have. I have seen many of the same cashiers at our local independent supermarket and they are well paid, happy, helpful people.) I've had jobs that ranged from the lowest paid labor to working at the professional level as a teacher. In between, I held jobs working in retail including two auto parts stores, a clothing department in a Macys, an import goods store, and a few bookstores. Knowing the inventory, helping customers, merchandising, taking inventory were a part of those jobs as much as simply running a cash register. Those were transition jobs for me, but I worked with people who worked in those positions for many years and who were satisfied with their work. We who are consumers rely on people carrying out those jobs and many people who do them rely on that work for making a living, so I don't see why we would not support the idea of giving those workers a living wage.
You even said yourself that they were "transition jobs". That is what everyone should view it as unless you make manager.
Not everyone is cut out to be a manager or a professional. That doesn't make them lesser people (not that anyone said they are), it just means they are more well suited and/or happier doing the work of a retail employee. For some, that is their career and I see it as a respectable one.

We still need parts of capitalism to remain in place and forcing certain aspects is not always good for every business to absorb.0 -

From Walmart, $0.82 for a KitKat
*edit: Just noticed this was a 5-pack snack size. But even the King Size Kit Kat was $1.49. So a regular would probably be about this same price too (just found it, its 88 cents).

Moot point because I would agree $2.80 is too low, whether it can buy 1 candy bar or 3. I just thought his analogy was funny, I've never paid that price for a candy bar in my life.Post edited by mace1229 on0

Tipped workers always have a lower minimum wage than regular workers, and normally (and the past 15 months have been far from normal) make in actuality a lot more than actual minimum wage.
Just a terrible time recently to be a waitperson or bartender or similar. This weekend we rock Portland0 -
