I wonder how they can be UN-appointed when the new administration is in office? It is troubling to read about this.

I generally agree, although I don't know the laws around the special counsel. However, I would be surprised if the acting AG would assign the SC, since he is a career official. He'll probably get fired too.Halifax2TheMax said:

POTUS can fire the special counsel by ordering his AG to do so but not without there being a shit storm. Nixon ordered his AG to fire Archibald Cox who refused to do so and resigned. Then he ordered his Assistant AG to do so and he too refused and resigned in protest. Then it came to Bork, who did so and why he wasn't appointed to the SCOTUS during Reagan's term, I think.
