This country is fucked. Schools just went back to full distance learning as cases are spiking out of control. We had already opted for distance so no change for us. Governor just put some soft mandates in place to limit bars and restaurant hours again because they are tying high spread after 10pm when people have had a few and get lax. Anyone at a bar probably doesn't care that much either way so that was a no brainer. Meanwhile, my family asked if we wanted to come over for Thanksgiving for a small gathering of family. We declined. I can't fully trust they are taking all precautions. Based on what I see at work, I really don't trust anyone anymore. People say one thing, but when you catch them with their mask down, the excuses flow. Almost every time we have a positive case and the area tries to claim they wore masks all the time and distanced, I just scoff. Bullshit, I have eyes too. It's a hopeless situation...0

pretty fucked up, eh?
the problem is, more patients are going in to hospitals and surgery centers that are positive and everyone that comes into contact with them is then exposed. there are not enough travel or temporary hospital patient care staff to cover, so either the covid positive staff stays home and overworks the rest of the staff, or they work and expose everyone else. it is a huge clusterfuck."You can tell the greatness of a man by what makes him angry." - Lincoln

i know my extended family are not getting together for thanksgiving. and we are probably not getting together for the holidays either.
i used to not be too worried about my own safety, but as this pandemic rages on it is clear that most people do not care about people other than themselves, so i am only leaving the house for work related activities and urgent errands like the grocery store, pharmacy, etc."You can tell the greatness of a man by what makes him angry." - Lincoln

A record-breaking surge in U.S. coronavirus cases is being driven to a significant degree by casual occasions that may feel deceptively safe, officials and scientists warn — dinner parties, game nights, sleepovers and carpools.
Many earlier coronavirus clusters were linked to nursing homes and crowded nightclubs. But public health officials nationwide say case investigations are increasingly leading them to small, private social gatherings. This behind-doors transmission trend reflects pandemic fatigue and widening social bubbles, experts say — and is particularly insidious because it is so difficult to police and likely to increase as temperatures drop and holidays approach.
The White House coronavirus task force has been urging states that are virus hot spots to curtail maskless get-togethers of family and friends, saying in reports that asymptomatic attendees “cause ongoing transmission, frequently infecting multiple people in a single gathering.”
As new daily cases in the United States surpassed 145,000 on Wednesday, New York Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo (D) announced a 10-person limit on gatherings in private homes, calling them a “great spreader.” Similar restrictions have been imposed in states including Ohio; Utah; Connecticut; Colorado, where one recent cluster involved seven people infected while playing the dice game bunco; and Rhode Island, whose governor has pledged to fine violators. Oregon last week announced a “pause” in hard-hit counties on most groups larger than six people.
“Earlier in the outbreak, much of the growth in new daily cases was being driven by focal outbreaks — long-term care facilities, things of that nature,” said Nirav Shah, director of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention in Maine, where cases have soared in the past two weeks. “Now, the kitchen table is a place of risk.”
In Maine, as in other states, case investigators are seeing a new and related pattern: People who are infected list more close contacts than they did earlier, making the work of contact tracers more time-consuming and complicated. From March through September, the average number of contacts identified in Maine coronavirus investigations was 3.5. In October, that rose to 5.8.

“Often, they’re with people we know really well,” Rubin said of these gatherings. “We let our guard down.”
Amber Calderon now knows she did that in October. The 24-year-old was excited to see some of her relatives for the first time in months at her nephew’s birthday party — and she felt safe. The Conroe, Tex., resident knew her relatives wore masks and socially distanced in their day-to-day lives, she said, so she “trusted everyone.”
About 25 people attended the party at a house, and Calderon said just one person wore a mask — her 81-year-old grandmother. Calderon started to feel ill a few days later, and she tested positive for the coronavirus on Oct. 20. Ten other people who were there also got sick, she said, including her grandmother.
“When I tested positive, I was mad at the situation I put myself in,” Calderon said. “I should’ve never attended that party that day. None of us should have. I knew better.”
In some places, the sheer volume of cases is so great that public health departments cannot connect the dots between them or discern whether a gathering attended by one infected person is the same as one reported by another.
In Minnesota, which reported a single-day record of nearly 6,000 cases on Sunday, the state’s infectious-disease director, Kris Ehresmann, described what she called a “circular” problem: Social gatherings are leading to more community spread, and more spread is making those events ever riskier.
“It’s getting more and more difficult to really tease out an interpretation of these data, because our community transmission just keeps going up,” said Amy Westbrook, the public health director of St. Louis County, Minn.
In her county, she said, 30 percent of people who test positive say they don’t know where they caught the virus, and a rapidly growing number haven’t even spoken to overwhelmed contact tracers. Westbrook said she is stepping up public education efforts, but she knows residents are somewhat numb to messages about masks, handwashing and staying home. And local law enforcement agencies, she said, have other matters to focus on than dinner parties.

And then there's this:
https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2020/11/12/staten-island-republican-thanksgiving-covid/
With Thanksgiving two weeks away and coronavirus cases rising in New York, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo tightened restrictions in the state on Wednesday by limiting private, at-home gatherings — including holiday celebrations — to just 10 people.
The Democrat’s move outraged some critics, including one New York City Council member who defiantly declared he wouldn’t follow the governor’s rules.
“I’ll be having more than 10 ppl at my house on Thanksgiving,” Joe Borelli, a Staten Island Republican who is the council’s minority whip, said in a tweet Wednesday. “Some family will come from (gasp!) New Jersey. Kids will see their grandparents, cousins will play in the yard, sis in law will bring strawberry rhubarb pie, & a turkey will be overcooked.”
As fall has brought colder weather to the Northeast, New York and New Jersey have reported an increase in new daily coronavirus cases in recent weeks, although the number of new daily infections isn’t as high as it was in late March and April when New York City was a hotbed of the pandemic.
Thanks Joey. Sometimes I think I'm just waiting to die.

I don't have time to pull up the exact data, but the heavy majority of the state's population is concentrated in the blue section surrounding Chicago. Cook County (Chicago) and the surrounding counties are seeing the worst levels of Covid since the pandemic began. I can assure you, those counties are not Team Trump. So there are flaws in this correlation. In any case, making this about red state/ blue state is not something I'm interested in. The entire country is spiraling out of control regardless of political affiliation.

Sweden is going to hell.
I repeat:
Sweden is going to hell.
My mom told me she had a box of facemasks. In her bag. Unopened. But she promised me now to use them when going by bus to her job.
This winter is gonna be crazy in Europe. The number of admitted corona patients is increasing faster in Sweden than in any other European country. It reports the newspaper Financial Times. The newspaper writes that the number of cases, hospitalized and dead is significantly higher than in Denmark, Norway and Finland, even if the population is taken into account. They also write that the spread of infection in Sweden is now starting to catch up with what was seen in the UK during the autumn.Post edited by Spiritual_Chaos on"Mostly I think that people react sensitively because they know you’ve got a point"0
