54th mass regiment monument in Boston  spray painted and damaged?  Ffs know your history.  I support change but this type of action does not help your cause.
I attended a professional development Zoom with Baruti Kafele last week (June 9-10, before this incident), and he asked the question -- how many of these young protesters even know their history? Many of them don't because our previously content-rich curriculums, determined by teachers not corporations, have been decimated by the culture wars and the era of No Child Left Behind where teaching "skills" is more important than teaching content. He advised us all that good teachers know how to breathe life in these dead, skills-based curriculums. I have never been more fired up to help my students understand their world -- if I ever get them back in a classroom.

I was so lucky to have great history teachers before teaching to the test was doubled down.

Great interview with Jon Stewart. I would love to see him come out of retirement and make Tucker look like a dummy again.

I miss him. Left-wing political comedy has gone way downhill without him. I loved Colbert doing his O'Riley-type character on The Colbert Report, but he's insufferable on the Late Show. Especially when he does an impression of Trump's voice. It's brutal.

I've recently watched a few old Stewart episodes from around the time of the Eric Garner killing. Here's one. The moment at 2:51 is beyond hilarious. "Go on, sensei."

Luckily in Social studies we don't teach to the test.  I have taught the 54th regiment in some capacity every year for the past 19 years.

Thanks for sharing. The line that really stands out to me from that whole interview was this one:

"There are issues, but again, we point a spotlight on the anecdotal and pretend that it’s universal. What that does is feed the narrative for people who want to use it for their own purposes. That’s what drives me bananas. We’re basically having giant public fights about symbolism, while the reality of our situation goes unexamined."
    It's a hopeless situation...

Yep. He gets very “real” with his comedy at times, but I’ve never seen him fired up like he is here. Powerful stuff.

That special is brilliant. Chappelle is extremely compelling, regardless of how many or few jokes. 27 minutes but it flies by.

Yes, totally. When he starts into it and you instantly figure out where he's going, it's a right cross.

For what it's worth I have cell phone video of protesters throwing a garbage can at a police vehicle for no reason.  That didn't make the news either.
For no reason? Right or wrong, I think we all know there was a reason.

I love how the the counter to "Black Lives Matter" is "USA! USA!"  To steal from memes, etc. on social media: racism is so prominent in America that when you protest it, people think you're protesting America.

Sort of.   I had a professor in university who liked to talk about the "threat of police" or "threat of punishment" keeps society in line.  There aren't actually enough police to enforce everything.  Not by a long shot.   It's the assumption that you will get caught and punished that keeps the masses in line.

In regard to the defunding police.   I think it's about Police becoming front line for everything.   Here in Victoria we have a homeless problem.  If you go back in time you see the government cutting more and more mental health services.   Cutting that funding required more policing, because now the streets are full of homeless people, who struggling to function in every day life, because of mental health and/or drug problems.    Now the police need more budget to deal with the homeless problem.   What if they took that budget, and the added officers, and redirected it back to mental health and addiction care.  Would it cost the same?  Would it help those people?  Would we benefit from cleaner streets for the same cost?   It's an interesting concept.   Police are basically the backstop of budget cuts elsewhere.

I also think governments should be required to remove a law for everyone they add.  It's laughable how many laws there are.   Cops and By-Law officers don't have the manpower to enforce anywhere near all of them.   They go for the big ones and the low hanging fruit.    What's the point of so many laws?
