Anyone else feel this was written with Chris in mind? There even appears to be a verse directed towards Vicki?  Either way it’s an amazing song and I also like The Who reference. Great Album.

It could very well be, haunting and deep.  Great chord changes too

I don't think there is any question at all this is about Chris Cornell.  That being said, I don't think we will likely ever hear the man say, this song is for my friend Chris Cornell.  It is vague enough to not be clear enough, and yet spot on.
His eminence has yet to show.

Took a while for me but when it clicks, boy does it click.  Anyone else get a Thin Air / Parting Ways vibe from it?

Yes, exactly what I heard as well. It’ a bit like off he goes got thrown in a blender with thin air, parting ways, and the into the wild album. All that is a positive in my mind. Maybe the best song on the album that isn’t Quick Escape.

“Vague enough to not be clear enough, and yet spot on” is great way to describe the song.

I heard Parting Ways the first time I played it.  Some of the same chords/progressions.
I've seen quite a few Pearl Jam shows.

The biggest surprise for me on the album.  It is one of my favorites.  Guitar sounds like Zeppelin-3 era Page acoustic.  Layering, texturing is great.
Up here so high I start to shake, Up here so high the sky I scrape, I've no fear but for falling down, So look out below I am falling now, Falling down,...not staying down, Could’ve held me up, rather tear me down, Drown in the river

100% written for Chris. And I do believe the last verse is about Vicky:

    "High or low, try again
    She fell off the altar
A vision you caught her but then
    A woodcut in red
I wish it was not you that she had led
    Selfish navigation with no end
Where'd you sleep? Can I find
    A deeper connection
In the face of rejection I'm trying
    I'm trying
Evidence in the echoes of your mind
Leads me to believe we missed the signs
Can I try one last time?
Could all use a savior from human behavior sometimes
    And the kids are alright
The Queen of Collections took your time
Sadness comes 'cause some of it was mine"

Do we know who’s playing the acoustic guitar. Is it Stone?  Wikipedia for the album doesn’t list Ed playing guitar on any tracks.  I know wiki is unreliable so thought that can’t be right.

agree; i think the "she" in the song is the allusive death, who Ed personified as a woman. i know there are rumors about ed's relationship with vicki, but i don't think ed is the type of person to throw shade at anyone, let alone in a tribute song to the man he saw as an older brother.
Beavis: All my friends are brown and red? What does that mean?
Butthead: It means that his friends are like turds and that they like suck.
Beavis: Heh heh. Oh yeah. Yeah! Get those spoons out of my face before I shove them up your butt!
    Butthead: Huh huh.

personally, this song hit me in the face. knowing that it was written for chris, i can hear ed going through each stage of grief in this song. there's so much hurt and pain here, it pains me to actually listen to it. one of the most powerful songs i've heard in the last decade. thank you for putting it out there for us, ed.
