So how does everyone feel about closing the borders? I mean specifically in shipping and also international travel?

From what Ive heard it won't stop it. Maybe slow it's arrival.

I imagine that would never happen due to logistics and the economy anyways.

Well there's no doubt that Trump would be loathe to do this, regardless of the wisdom. We're already standing on the edge of a recession and tipping. Closing the borders would guarantee it.

Well there's no doubt that Trump would be loathe to do this, regardless of the wisdom. We're already standing on the edge of a recession and tipping. Closing the borders would guarantee it.

Trump would have no trouble throwing the american people under the bus if he thought it would help him get re-elected. Wouldn't think twice about it or lose a wink of sleep.

He may worry about catching it himself though. The man is the poster child for vulnerability to the virus.

I was actually going to ask this question the other day and never got around to it. i was wondering if anyone knew the human immunity after exposure. I guess we now know. how does this affect potential vaccines? will they even work?

That's pretty scary, and the fact that we are a ways away from the vaccine makes it more so.

ok, but in this case it wasn't dormant, the woman got sick and recovered and then got sick again. I thought that getting sick was pretty much the same as a vaccine: it teaches your body to fight against that virus the next go-round.

or did your wife mean you can get sick from the virus at the same time as it is undetectable to the immune system?

It's a valid analogy. By no means am I calling immigrants an infection. I welcome immigrants with open arms. Let's be clear about that.

I'm comparing stopping int'l travel to building a border wall. Both are useless. Closing the barn door, if you will.

We can patrol the border, close all the airports, and seaports. But the US can't stop international travel anymore than they can stop an airborne virus from spreading.

So I listened to an immunologist who won a Pulitzer for her reporting on Ebola describe the issue with Team Trump Treason's response. Basically, she compared how the Chinese have dealt with it thus far and how the US would struggle, mostly quarantining and preventing freedom of movement (wouldn't happen here). She also described how the influenza pandemic had a death rate of 1.9% and that the coronavirus death rate is about 2.0%, if you are to believe the reporting out of China, where the death rate may be closer to 6%. This is where Team trump Treason's leadership, if you think he has any, fails. He should be demanding that China allow WHO and European and US medical experts in to study, learn and assist with addressing so that the world has a much better understanding of the nature of the threat and how best to address it. Its not happening (gee wonder why, burned every bridge with allies and potential allies). She also spoke to the virus, apparently it goes deep into the lungs. The issue then becomes patients needing ventilation. There's only so much capacity to treat patients who need it. What happens to those who need it and its not available? Is it even being discussed by Team Trump Treason and Pence? The previous administration's czar for this type of thing and their team, born out of the Ebola and SARS threats, were disbanded and defunded. Thanks Team Trump Treason. So the issue is going to become, containment and treatment and how to keep everything running during a quarantine. If you're not nervous, you should be. Particularly with who is at the helm. The virus essentially "hid" from the immune system during the first go around so the immune system couldn't totally destroy it. Therefore it went dormant. And when the woman was tested for the virus and came back negative it was assumed it ran it's course and was defeated. But maybe the immune system didn't quite get it all figured out before the virus "hid". So when it came back out of dormancy the immune system wasn't prepared? I'm not sure, I'm just speculating at this point.

I get what you're saying about the immune system should learn to kill the virus, so if it came out again, it should kill it.

So, like I said, I'm dumb and can't remember her full explanation. I will ask her when she gets back from work today and try and give you a better response then.

Wait a minute.. when I think of the influenza pandemic, I'm thinking of the Spanish Flu of 1918. That killed half a billion and had a mortality rate of almost 10%. Is that the comparison? If so, then holy shit I'm nervous.
