Romney just said he's going to vote to convict. Well done, Mitt!
Is this a republican politician with ethics? Morals? Common sense?
A republican politician who knows when to do the right thing?
    A republican politician with cajones?
No, I'm guessing probably more that he knows his political career is ending soon, he's not going for president again, and he just doesn't like Trump personally. Sp its out of spite.

So Trump is A-OK? He did nothing wrong? I guess ultimately I don't care what motivates someone to do the right thing, so even if it was done out of spite, it is still the right thing. But this is a weak take.
I scrolled up just to make sure I didn’t have a typo. And nope, never said that. Just that I think Romney’s vote is personal. How’d you get all that from that comment?

His political career is ending soon? He was just elected less than 2 years ago to the Senate.

Out of spite? Has nothing to do with the mountain of evidence I guess.
Ending soon wasn’t the right phrase. But I doubt he’ll run for president again is what I meant, so he won’t be “moving up” in politics, not over I should have said.
He’s been out spoken how much he doesn’t like Trump, that’s not a stretch. I could be wrong, but how much they don’t like each other  it’s not hard to think it could be personal.

So if you see someone murder someone, and then later say they murdered someone, they just don’t like the person?   It couldn’t possibly be that they saw the person murder someone and they are a murderer?

My point is, Romney see the actions the president takes and calls him out on it.  It is because Trump is doing things he shouldn’t be doing.  It isn’t because Romney doesn’t like or dislike Trump personally.

Republicans are spineless and morbidly hypocritical.  I say this because that is my observation.  Not because I dislike Republicans.  In fact, I say this because I know people that I like and respect and see how their morals that were so important weren’t anymore when Trump came to office.

I don’t get this. Read your last paragraph. That’s what 90% of this thread says about republicans. But when I suggest that maybe one of them voted against Trump for personal reasons that’s unbelievable?
You said republicans are “morbidly hypocritical.” Romney is a republican. Why do so many seem offended when I think he may have the wrong motives?
I think a lot career politicians on both sides are self-serving and hypocritical.
  • bootlegger10bootlegger10 Posts: 15,489
Okay, most republicans are hypocritical.  Romney is consistent.  If Obama did what Trump did Romney would and most Republicans would condemn.  Trump did it though and most republicans look the other way.  Romney is consistent.  I am sure he dislikes Trump too, but that doesn’t mean he is wrong.  Also really stupid to take a position he doesn’t believe in that hurts himself overall because he dislikes someone.  That is childish behavior we would expect from this President, not Romney.

Well, I have had many conversations with TrumpHumpers over the last day, all lambasting Romney. Your post ascribed Romney's vote as being motivated by spite, which is the talking point I've confronted multiple times now. Why? Romney has been very consistent. He has a set of values and beliefs (many of which I don't share) and he seems to stick to them. Just as John McCain did (again, didn't share all of his beliefs, but he was steadfast). So Romney made a principled vote (principles the GOP used to pretend to share), and suddenly he's persona non grata in the GOP and many are calling for his head. I think that is nonsense. I happen to share Romney's belief that Trump overstepped. Many other GOP Senators have now apparently shared that belief in private, but were afraid to vote their conviction, and instead fell in line out of fear of repercussion and retaliation.

IMHO, I think the House should have subpoenaed every direct and potential witness and requested a fast track ruling to the SCOTUS, if necessary. They also should have been willing to drag this through the summer campaign season because one way or the other, via court rulings on witnesses testifying, documents and FOIA requests being granted, the damning information would have come out. In addition, they should have included the strongest of the Team Mueller obstruction of justice allegations and made the argument that there's a pattern of "obstructing justice." Team Trump Treason didn't testify before Team Mueller, only answering written questions, stated he didn't recall, when it was convenient, multiple times and appeared to have mislead Team Mueller. Those threads should have been picked up by the House committees and investigated further and all of which should have been included in the articles of impeachment as a third/fourth/fifth charge. By not doing so, they allowed the repub senate to proceed with a cover up. Had the investigation and trial gone through the November election, like Nixon, the evidence would have been overwhelming and you "might" have seen 20 repubs flip. However, I think they've completely sold out their souls and have set a very dangerous and long lasting precedent. They'll rue the day.

There are continuing SDNY investigations and I wrote to my congressional delegation requesting that they subpoena the witnesses and allow Americans the opportunity to learn the truth. They can continue to hold hearings, call witnesses, issue subpoenas and hope they get the dirt before November. The repubs sold out to a con man. Speaking of which, no shout out to Kelly Ann CONway today and I wonder how those awaiting pardons are feeling. Do you think Team Trump Treason even remembers who Manaforte is? Or Rodger Dodger Stoned? I think we'll be hearing from Les soon too. Could still be a hot, hot summer.

Halifax, awesome perspective, thank you.  You
mentiimed the president not testifying, does he legally have to or does he get special privileges since he is president?

hats off to mitt. i believe what he said in his speech. his faith guided him and he applied those principles when he voted. he stated in so many words that he is concerned about his legacy and what history will say about him and this vote. that is a profile in courage and i applaud him. he knew he was going to get blowback. the good thing for him is that coming from utah he is safe in the next election. he will weather any blowback he gets. trump will put him on blast and then go back to tweeting that he is the victim.

i think he could have been a decent president compared to w and trump. his health care bill was the same thing as the ACA so he would not have worked to gut his own bill. had he not run away from that in the campaign he maybe could have won the presidency.

They could have compelled him to give an in person video tapped deposition a la Clinton but they would have fought it. I think Team Mueller should have gotten at least that as in person depositions with skilled litigators results in more thorough investigation. Body language, pauses, blinking eyes give hints as to which answers may be false and require follow up. The written answers were mostly written by his attorneys and where Team Trump Treason gave an answer or partial answer, it was obvious. CYA Barr kaboshed Team Mueller and is an accomplice to the cover up.

I am so thankful that Mitt Romney still has a pulse and a spine. Gotta be honest, for a few days there after they voted down witnesses, it seemed like the worst case scenario would play out---a straight partisan vote other than maybe those three "vulnerable" idiotic democrats." Thank god they came to their senses. Had this been bipartisan IN FAVOR of acquittal, it would have been a political disaster. That was avoided and then Mitt showed true courage becoming the first senator in history to vote for removal of a president in his own party. That is a huge. I was beginning to lose hope.....but then the Mitter and Doug Jones, etc all stepped up.

What minor bump Trump received in polling will surely drop quickly based on how he has acted, what he has said, and what he has done since. This fucking guy just says "no thanks" to any chance of taking the high road and any possibility of bringing in new supporters.

The actions of the president over the last week should and hopefully will come back to haunt the Susan Collins' of this world come November.

Welp.....this has been fun! On to the next impeachment!

Yo it's up there.  The whole thing's been pretty shitty.  The indicator flag popped up EARLY.
