No, I'm guessing probably more that he knows his political career is ending soon, he's not going for president again, and he just doesn't like Trump personally. Sp its out of spite.

So Trump is A-OK? He did nothing wrong? I guess ultimately I don't care what motivates someone to do the right thing, so even if it was done out of spite, it is still the right thing. But this is a weak take.
I scrolled up just to make sure I didn’t have a typo. And nope, never said that. Just that I think Romney’s vote is personal. How’d you get all that from that comment?

His political career is ending soon? He was just elected less than 2 years ago to the Senate.

Out of spite? Has nothing to do with the mountain of evidence I guess.
Ending soon wasn’t the right phrase. But I doubt he’ll run for president again is what I meant, so he won’t be “moving up” in politics, not over I should have said.
He’s been out spoken how much he doesn’t like Trump, that’s not a stretch. I could be wrong, but how much they don’t like each other  it’s not hard to think it could be personal.

So if you see someone murder someone, and then later say they murdered someone, they just don’t like the person?   It couldn’t possibly be that they saw the person murder someone and they are a murderer?

My point is, Romney see the actions the president takes and calls him out on it.  It is because Trump is doing things he shouldn’t be doing.  It isn’t because Romney doesn’t like or dislike Trump personally.

Republicans are spineless and morbidly hypocritical.  I say this because that is my observation.  Not because I dislike Republicans.  In fact, I say this because I know people that I like and respect and see how their morals that were so important weren’t anymore when Trump came to office.

I don’t get this. Read your last paragraph. That’s what 90% of this thread says about republicans. But when I suggest that maybe one of them voted against Trump for personal reasons that’s unbelievable?
You said republicans are “morbidly hypocritical.” Romney is a republican. Why do so many seem offended when I think he may have the wrong motives?
I think a lot career politicians on both sides are self-serving and hypocritical.

Okay, most republicans are hypocritical.  Romney is consistent.  If Obama did what Trump did Romney would and most Republicans would condemn.  Trump did it though and most republicans look the other way.  Romney is consistent.  I am sure he dislikes Trump too, but that doesn’t mean he is wrong.  Also really stupid to take a position he doesn’t believe in that hurts himself overall because he dislikes someone.  That is childish behavior we would expect from this President, not Romney.

Well, I have had many conversations with TrumpHumpers over the last day, all lambasting Romney. Your post ascribed Romney's vote as being motivated by spite, which is the talking point I've confronted multiple times now. Why? Romney has been very consistent. He has a set of values and beliefs (many of which I don't share) and he seems to stick to them. Just as John McCain did (again, didn't share all of his beliefs, but he was steadfast). So Romney made a principled vote (principles the GOP used to pretend to share), and suddenly he's persona non grata in the GOP and many are calling for his head. I think that is nonsense. I happen to share Romney's belief that Trump overstepped. Many other GOP Senators have now apparently shared that belief in private, but were afraid to vote their conviction, and instead fell in line out of fear of repercussion and retaliation.
