So there is also good news in this bad time!

Just to spread something positive here...

I read that story about a 12 year old boy who saved himself and his dog by escaping the fire in the car!

Brave young man. I'm sure there are so many of them.

First of all, how many wildfire firefighters actually DO hold a hose?  Now maybe if he had said, "I don't wield a McLead or a Pulaski or operate a chain saw or drive a bulldozer", he might at least have come across sounding somehwat informed.   I can see why he gets criticized the way he does.

They are used widely by wildland firefighters but can be very handy in the yard as well.

    Here's McLeod:
and a few types of Pulaskis:

    Very handy tools!

Ah yes, that works too!  I guess they are a type of rake and pick axe but with more options for using in cutting fire lines.

I'm blown away but the people who use those tools to do the kind of hot, dirty work of fighting wildfires.  Major kudos to those dudes and ladies!

we cannot cut containment lines atm. We are experiencing catastrophic weather conditions with fires spotting 40km ahead of fire fronts. They cant backburn as too dangerous with them escaping as one did already and lost 20 houses. 2 fire fighters killed last night when they're tanker was hit by a falling tree causing them to lose control and roll. Tomorrow will be catastrophic and they are focused on basically saving lives and property where and if they can. 6 fire fighters have been hospitalised since yesterday. One tanker was enveloped by flames burning 3 of its fire fighters. Flame height and ferocity is making it almost impossible to fight. commissioner shane fitzsimmons announced there will be losses tomorrow but they will do their best.
  • I am so sorry for all the losses! Be and stay safe!
