First of all, how many wildfire firefighters actually DO hold a hose?  Now maybe if he had said, "I don't wield a McLead or a Pulaski or operate a chain saw or drive a bulldozer", he might at least have come across sounding somehwat informed.   I can see why he gets criticized the way he does.

    What's a McLead and Pulaski?

They are used widely by wildland firefighters but can be very handy in the yard as well.

    Here's McLeod:
and a few types of Pulaskis:

    Very handy tools!

Ah yes, that works too!  I guess they are a type of rake and pick axe but with more options for using in cutting fire lines.

I'm blown away but the people who use those tools to do the kind of hot, dirty work of fighting wildfires.  Major kudos to those dudes and ladies!

we cannot cut containment lines atm. We are experiencing catastrophic weather conditions with fires spotting 40km ahead of fire fronts. They cant backburn as too dangerous with them escaping as one did already and lost 20 houses. 2 fire fighters killed last night when they're tanker was hit by a falling tree causing them to lose control and roll. Tomorrow will be catastrophic and they are focused on basically saving lives and property where and if they can. 6 fire fighters have been hospitalised since yesterday. One tanker was enveloped by flames burning 3 of its fire fighters. Flame height and ferocity is making it almost impossible to fight. commissioner shane fitzsimmons announced there will be losses tomorrow but they will do their best.
  • I am so sorry for all the losses! Be and stay safe!

thank you. Today we have 10,000 RFS and emergency personnel on the ground  in NSW our biggest ever coordinated effort in history. We cannot put the fires out they will be doing their best  just to save lives today. Its as bad as it gets with a dry lanscape and winds gusting up to 90km hour when the southerly hits. humidity below 10%. basically the bush will combust under these conditions and fires will move at phenomenal speed.
  • Wow..just unreal...hard to fathom the ferocity of those fires...we were highly effected for 3 years in a row in the interior of British Columbia with intense smoke and fires just awful felt like armagedon luckily had some respite last summer...we had some  air filters installed in every corner of the childcare facility I work at and stayed indoors for the most part of the summer when it got really bad...then we had a major flood that wiped out entire neighborhoods in the spring...crazy times...last summer and fall were idyllic..hope  this cycle of fire will be done for you all down under soon.

Thanks to Canadian and American firefighters who arrived today to help with the fight.
The thought of so many animals perishing is painful.

I’m here in the Adelaide Hills and it’s still burning. I’m so worried about the rest of our Summer here. Could not imagine the pain some families are going through starting the year with nothing. 😔

So upsetting that volunteer firefighters are having to take out loans to pay for living expenses because our government won't give them financial support.

we are sitting at about 35c mid north coast NSW. Into the 40c plus tomorrow then hopefully a cool change. Many fireworks for new years eve are still deciding to cancel including Sydney. The decision has to be made by the RFS and sydney city council. I hope they cancel

Victoria is now burning. Even homes in the northern suburbs of Melbourne were threatened today.
And I heard Tasmania has a fire threat.
