    I eat meat rarely but when I do, that is what I look for as well.  But the fact remains, eating less meat/ eating lower on the food chain is better for the planet.  If 7.7 billion people ate beef every day, no way would that be sustainable.

    I am vegan, but never mention I am to people anymore because invariably they start saying 'I am going to eat a burger, love dead cow.  Or bacon give me some pig. hahaha yum yum yum.'

    Out of character for Smellyman perhaps, but I can see why he said that.  It's happened here and on another forum site I visit every  time (no exaggeration) a vegan/ vegetarian post is made is. And I say that as someone who is not 100% vegetarian (mostly, but not always).  I totally understand him lashing out.  The same snarky, baiting, replies.  Maybe sometimes they're meant as a joke, but it gets old- especially when the choice of the vegan/vegetarian is made for the good of the planet.

    I'd never ridicule someone for being vegan or vegetarian or anything else.  Just as I don't appreciate when *some* people like to cry "Murderer!!" to people who eat meat.

    Either way, as Smellyman said, it IS being a dick.

    The OP of this thread has no problem insulting meat-eaters.  They have done that on many occasions here.  And why do vegans need to tell people they are vegan?  I do not go around advertising I like meat.  My guess vegans who need to tell people they are vegans are just trying to come across as better than others...

    I was a vegan for a year and a vegetarian for two years after that. It was hard to do and what I found the worst was the inconvenience I was to anyone whose house I went to for a meal. My mother in law would always make me a special meal. Got really tired of being a bother. I only eat once a day so my meat is limited. But anything anyone can do to help this planet (cause it needs it bad), I fully support.

    Not all vegans advertise that they are vegans.  Some I know only mention it if they are invited to dinner.

    Some vegans mention it because they want other people to consider eating less or no meat for the sake of the planet.

    Some mention it as a way of passing along health suggestions.  One year a ways back, I ate only raw vegetable and sprouts for three months and I never felt better.  Since then I've done shorter versions of the raw food diet. 

    And a few vegans who are obnoxious about it, but there are a always a few people who are obnoxious about anything you can list.  But I think most vegans are very cool about it all.

    First, my apologies for a little personal rant here.  Mostly I think this is great and a hopeful meat substitute but not for me because yet again, it contains yeast extract which I cannot eat.    What's amazing is that so many things have yeast in them besides bread:

    Almost all canned soup.  Check out the labels.  It's VERY hard to find canned soup without yeast in it.
    Canned re-fried beans.  Same as above.  I looked high and low and finally found one with no yeast.
    Bean burgers.  Home-made, of course, are fine.  But to have on hand for a quick meal- no way!  I have never found one without yeast.
    An amazing number of crackers contain yeast.
    Almost all vegetarian, chicken and beef bullion have yeast added.
    Most prepared humus, dips, gravies, many condiments, etc. contain yeast.

    I could bore you for an hour listing all the things with yeast in them.  I have to read labels like a detective.  Things you would not at all expect contain yeast.  It's weird!

You choose to support the slaughter of other living beings when you're out for lunch instead of picking the vegetarian/vegan option and with that not supporting that slaughter. The lack of empathy is apparent enough to warrant insult. It's disgusting.

    I criticized meat eaters for posting snarky remarks on threads about vegan/vegetarian.  Now we jump to the other extreme and you come on with force admittedly insulting a meat eater.  Is that how you attempt to convince someone to go vegan?  I don't think so.

    Besides, what is the point of laboratory food?  What are the long-term effects?  What problems does this solve in the long run?
