Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez

Youngest female ever elected to congress ever.

She can't afford rent in DC so she started a Go Fund Me account?

I don't think it's really her but we should discuss her anyways.

She labeled herself a "Democratic Socialist".

She appears to have labeled herself pretty accurately.

Honestly - this does kinda show what has become of congress.  People should be able to serve regardless of their bank account.  I would think it would be smart to have a stipend of some kind for senators below a certain income bracket.  Goes away obviously once paid in congress for a while.

I am not a huge fan at all, some good, some great, some bad, some awful.  But good for her, let's see what she does with this position now.

The high cost of real estate in DC and having to maintain a residence in your home district has been an issue for years. But certain posters only seem to point it out when a liberal, Hispanic woman mentions the challenge of it. And no, no one should be living out of their office.

    Huh?!?
  • Lots of people take jobs and struggle to make down payments on rent and such in new surroundings.  Not sure what makes her unique other than with no experience she lucked into a $174k a year job.   Pretty selfish of her considering her stances not to buck up and point to others who deal with a lot worse.   Another liberal talking the talk but can’t walk the walk.   Gimme gimme gimme.  Look at poor me.  With a pending $174K salary.  Lol. She’s already out of touch with her constituents.

And Joe Biden commuted from home daily via train.  Northeast regional goes right from her home to DC union station.  You don’t have to have places in both locations.   Crash with a friend.  How many rookie baseball players do that?

Because she knocked on thousands of doors and impressed her community and  is acutually representative of the people that elected her, and not a shill for corporate interests? Isn’t that how The House of REPRESENTATIVES is supposed to work?

maybe you read a different interview than I did :

Ms. Ocasio-Cortez said the transition period will be “very unusual, because I can’t really take a salary. I have three months without a salary before I’m a member of Congress. So, how do I get an apartment? Those little things are very real.” She said she saved money before leaving her job at the restaurant, and planned accordingly with her partner. “We’re kind of just dealing with the logistics of it day by day, but I’ve really been just kind of squirreling away and then hoping that gets me to January.”
    https://www.nytimes.com/2018/11/07/nyregion/ocasio-cortez-congress-washington.html

Thursday, she pointed to her lack of income as a reason why some people are not able to work in politics.

"There are many little ways in which our electoral system isn’t even designed (nor prepared) for working-class people to lead," she said.

She said she hopes she can change that.

Yup, she’s right about this and it’s something I never thought about before. As I said above, this needs changing. Cause we want people like her (take her politics out of it) in Congress

I know where Baltimore is and thought I heard that was where he commuted from? Maybe it was Wilmington? Either way, not even close to making that grind from NYC. Then she’d be criticized for missing votes. Just more faux outrage when the real outrage is in the Oval, with the walls closing in.

  • I was being a bit glib, but the point is, once her job starts, she will have plenty of money to get a place.  Yes, prior to and just shortly after she will have to improvise just as millions of people do.   And I am sure she will not be the first or last Rep to face this.  Difference is they just deal with it.  The House was meant to be this way,   The Senate is a whole other story.  That would be atypical.

Good for her winning.  That’s the easy part. Now for the real world.

So why don’t we wait till she starts her job before criticizing her why jump on her before she has casted a vote ..
jesus greets me looks just like me ....
  • I started this thread because of the GoFundMe page.  There were others that got shut down because they most likely weren't her.  This current one most likely isn't her either.

I don't think that Ms Ocasio-Cortez would start a GoFundMe page for an apartment for how it would look, I could be wrong, we will find out soon enough.

There was also no pages on her which I thought was interesting.  She does deserve her own page.

She has a tough road ahead of her.  Let's see how she does.

No, this was brought up by ignorant conservatives to try to make her look dumb.

"Why don't you use all those campaign funds you raised? Or did you blow it all on fancy clothes?"

You can use those funds for campaigning, including clothing.  But not to rent an apartment.  Thems the rules, not ver batim of course.

What conservatives were doing that?  That's shameful.

What are you talking about? Who here said they would care if she slept in her office?
The high cost of real estate in DC and having to maintain a residence in your home district has been an issue for years. But certain posters only seem to point it out when a liberal, Hispanic woman mentions the challenge of it. And no, no one should be living out of their office.
Leave it to you to introduce the terms "pasty white guy" and "liberal, Hispanic woman" into the conversation.

"Another of the benefits is the overnight apartments as all members who live more than five miles (50 km) from the Parlament are entitled to - completely free of charge. All are located in central Stockholm: in Södermalm, in the old town and at Östermalm.

If you want to rent an apartment at similar addresses via Stockholm's housing agency, you can wait 16 years.

The Riksdag housing is between 16.6 square meters and 82 square meters. Per Lodenius, Centre Party, has one of the three smallest accommodation apartments in the old town house.

    - I use the apartment when I work late evenings and nights and have early meetings the following morning. It is about being able to carry out an assignment we have where we are on duty 24 hours a day, says Per Lodenius, who also has a private residence outside Norrtälje."

So why is she being attacked for expressing a legitimate concern that others that have gone before her have struggled with? Funny how some can’t discuss racism. Or acknowledge that it exists and is a factor, particularly for some posters.

Although Swedish cancer research is still high, Sweden is being overthrown by other European countries, the Swedish Cancer Fund (Cancerfonden) writes in its forthcoming report, which Dagens Medicin (Daily Medicin Magazine) has taken part.

When the 2006 fund for the first time ranked the world's 20 leading cancer research nations, Sweden ended up in 9th place. Over the years, the country has since declined to find 15th place this year, compared to last year's 14th place. And our Nordic neighbors have begun to  catch up. Norway has entered 20th place, and Denmark, which is in place 18 this year, is behind a larger percentage of the 5 percent most cited articles.

Who exactly is attacking her? And if representatives before her have struggled with this, what's so special about her? Seems like a problem any congressperson could have regardless of their pasty whiteness, Hispanic liberalness, or whatever other labels you have for people.

Do you think Unsung came up his meme all by himself? Sorry, I don’t surf the dregs of the Internet. So, is it because she’s liberal, Hispanic or a woman?
