  • OK so in my neck of the woods Amazon is coming...

I'm not real excited about this.  It means that the area LIC, and everything else in the close vicinity is going to skyrocket in price...

My plans for buying a house in Rockaway are all but shattered now...

Ms Ocasio did weigh in on it.

    https://www.cbsnews.com/news/amazon-hq2-alexandria-ocasio-cortez-says-queens-residents-are-outraged-over-long-island-city-plan/

I will be putting in an application though...
    You're in LIC?
I have relatives who have lived there since the 60's.
It's  crazy to see how it's blown up in the last few years.
No I'm on the island but i do a bunch of work there.

If you offered me a building for free there 10 years ago I would have declined.  I can't believe what it has become.

Rockaway is a ferry ride away and where I am originally from and where I wanted to buy property buy the damn hipsters have almost overrun that too..

Hopefully they are successful in pushing Amazon out and forcing them to go to another city.  I know some midwestern cities ready with open arms. I really hope they organize and force these jobs elsewhere.

Rockaway Taco has the best tacos in NYC.

We looked into buying a house there in 2012 so that dawn patrol would be much easier, but we chose to buy a tiny apartment in our Brooklyn neighborhood instead and only surf on the weekends.

Then Sandy happened, and we felt like we dodged a bullet. (We were also looking at Long Beach and Red Hook, both of which were also severely impacted by the superstorm.)

I get  tacos at Rockaway Brewings taco stand.  Good food there.

I was looking in buying around 08/09 but never did and like you said, Sandy happened.
  • It’s funny,   A Democrat brings thousands of high paying jobs to a city area and people still complain.   Think of all the people who own properties in that area that just became millionaires!   Yes, some were already, but many were not,  why does everything have to be that if it helps 1 rich person it’s bad.  Does anyone realize anything that happens, the rich are going to get richer.  So, ignore the noise and ask yourself - will a lot of less rich be helped by this?   Governor Cuomo seems to think so.  Unless, that is, he’s in on it too!

You get that people making $125k/yr pay a lot in taxes.  Right?  And what at least in theory can he done  with those tax dollars?     And what about the hardworking janitors and cleaning people and other service industry that will crop up around this new HQ?  Those jobs don’t count because there will be people making more?   (Not to mention all the construction jobs that just got created for the next 5-10 years).

She’s in over her head.  If she wants to just pay for healthcare, this is how you do it.  Give people jobs with access to healthcare, and collect more taxes to pay for those that don’t.  She reminds me of my nephews and nieces BEFORE they went to college.  Interesting how their views changed once they started working and had real jobs.

And not to put words in his mouth, but this is what Jason P is referring to.  She should chase Amazon away so a nice midwestern town can reap the benefits.

So, to recount Queens’ newly minted Rep thinks - Jobs bad.  Paying for healthcare easy.  Yes, we get what we deserve indeed.
Sorry. The world doesn't work the way you tell it to.

Subsidizing one of the richest companies in the world with tax dollars is a great idea. Also, throwing single payer healthcare under the bus.

Bernie would be proud. Anything to stick it to us LIB's on the AMT eh captain. Haha.

This is exactly what she was doing. Her job. Before it's even her job. She even prefaces her tweets with the fact that she's just relaying the concerns of her constituency.

It just seems weird because most US Representatives or Senators, for that matter, don't do their jobs at all; they just do what they want or what the corporations, special interests and lobbyists who line their pockets want.

I'm pretty sure that NY crunched the numbers and determined that they will be the net winners in this deal. I think they should release their figures and lay it all out for the residents to see. All just projections of course but it would be interesting to see how long they think it will take for the net revenue to the area to surpass what was given up in terms of the incentives.

This is so true. If she's looking out for his constituents, that's good because that's really her job. Most congresspersons are there literally to be one more vote for their party.

What are you talking about? Who here said they would care if she slept in her office?
The high cost of real estate in DC and having to maintain a residence in your home district has been an issue for years. But certain posters only seem to point it out when a liberal, Hispanic woman mentions the challenge of it. And no, no one should be living out of their office.
Leave it to you to introduce the terms "pasty white guy" and "liberal, Hispanic woman" into the conversation.
So why is she being attacked for expressing a legitimate concern that others that have gone before her have struggled with? Funny how some can’t discuss racism. Or acknowledge that it exists and is a factor, particularly for some posters.
Who exactly is attacking her? And if representatives before her have struggled with this, what's so special about her? Seems like a problem any congressperson could have regardless of their pasty whiteness, Hispanic liberalness, or whatever other labels you have for people.
Do you think Unsung came up his meme all by himself? Sorry, I don’t surf the dregs of the Internet. So, is it because she’s liberal, Hispanic or a woman?

None of the above.  You keep trying though.  Those labels work so well.
