Embiid needs surgery for orbital fracture, could reportedly return in 2-4 weeks
by Chris Walder · 31m ago

With the start of the NBA playoffs just around the corner, the Philadelphia 76ers - who will be making their first appearance since 2012 - are in jeopardy of not having their All-Star center available.

Joel Embiid has been placed in the NBA's concussion protocol after experiencing symptoms following Wednesday's 118-101 victory over the New York Knicks, the team announcedThursday. He exited the game at the 11:50 mark of the second quarter after smacking heads with teammate Markelle Fultz, who walked away unscathed.

A CT scan revealed Embiid suffered an orbital fracture of his left eye, which will require surgery. He was initially diagnosed with a facial bruise, passing the NBA's locker room concussion assessment tool at the time.

The Sixers didn't provide a timetable for his return, although a league source told ESPN's Zach Lowe that Embiid could return to action in two-to-four weeks.

After missing the first two seasons of his career due to injury, the 24-year-old big man has managed to suit up for 63 of a possible 74 games for the 44-30 Sixers in 2017-18.

Embiid is averaging 22.9 points, 11 rebounds, 3.2 assists, and 1.8 blocks in 30.3 minutes per game. Philadelphia owns a 3-8 record when he doesn't play.

If he’s back for the playoffs and they can at least hold onto the 5th seed (which is likely with all the trash opponents left on schedule)...this is probably not the worst thing in the world. He’ll be fresh!

It’s quite Sixery that Fultz’s shoulder did this to him though.

Incidentally, my wife and I were at both games where he got hurt this year and last year. Sat in the same section. And at the exact time of both injuries I was pissing in the same exact bathroom. Perhaps we should stop going to games...or maybe I should just hold it in?

Haha. Well I think them winning another 20 games next year would be a good start to that turn around. Wouldn't shock me to see them be in the mix for the 8th seed for a while as well. But wins and losses next year take a back seat to actually seeing the fruits of the last few season's labor on the floor together finally--they'll just have so much more talent that it will be hard not to be significantly better. And '17/'18 they should be a playoff team for sure. God bless Sam Hinkie. They can now let these seeds start to sprout and get better while still have a shot at not one but two top ten picks over the next couple years. Future's bright, my friends. Go Sixers
the underlined above is delusional and frankly utterly insane. so in 2 years they are going from 10 wins to a playoff team? sorry but that's utterly fucking absurd unless they sign a top 10 level free agent to add to the mix of young guys. I guess you didn't quite understand the first time i mentioned that winning 20 more games next year still puts them in the bottom 5 of the NBA and nowhere near close to the playoffs. I think you are setting yourself up for a big letdown next year and the following year. Yes they will have a big talent upgrade but it will be incredibly young and inexperienced. It took OKC with Durant 3 years to make the playoffs. The T'Wolves with the last 2 NBA Rookies of the Year only won 29 games this year (albeit in a much tougher conference). and you expect this team and franchise to get 40 some wins in 2 years?
are you aware that teams can make trades in the nba? doesn't seem like you are
of course but juggler isn't saying they are going to make the playoffs in two years based on a supposed trade. with the players they have now and the draft picks to come they aren't making the playoffs in the next two years. no fucking chance.
Yes I am. I am fully expecting this roster to look vastly different in a year or two after they figure out which pieces fit and which pieces don't. The point is they have an abundance of ways to get better and get better quicker than narrow minded people like you think.
IF/when they make a trade or free agent signing then i will readjust my line of thinking to go with the roster but as of now thinking playoffs in 2 years is just setting yourself up to be severely disappointed.
As usual, no foresight. Not surprising whatsoever
ill tell you what since you are so fucking smart put your money up on your prediction of the playoffs in 2 years. Let's bet a $500 donation to the others persons favorite charity on the Sixers making the playoffs in the next 2 years. If you are so confident feel free to take the bet.
3 out of the last 4 years a team in the east has made the playoffs with 38 wins. The Pacers got in with 37 wins in 2011. The eastern conference blows. Sure I'll take your dumb bet.

Hey look it's two years later! Not only playoffs, but fighting for home court advantage. Who would've thought?

@pjhawks    -----$500 to the Montgomery County SPCA please.

You should have trusted the process. Thanks for playing (by the way, Embiid is also healthy and dominate).

shall we just call this the Juggler jinx?

10 in a row! 16 games over 500 and tied for 3rd in the east with Cleveland, not too shabby.

This is fun. Fultz is quick to the rack and you can see his wingspan is going to be a positive.

I think Dario is back for the Cavs...who will be on the back end of a tough back to back.

Would you rather the 4 seed and play Indiana or 3 seed and play Miami?

Wow, Kyrie is done for the year. 3 seed wouldn't play Wash?

Wash is 7th right now. But 6-8 are within .5 of each other.

Next matchup is gonna be a tough one against Cleveland.  I'm hoping their streak will continue but w/out Embiid and maybe Dario I don't think so.  It is a home game though.

4 pt favorites vs Cavs without Embiid? I know they're on the back end of a back to back but that's nuts...

This is the first step. But, how many will be needed for his return?

PHILADELPHIA PA - DECEMBER 7 Joel Embiid 21 of the Philadelphia 76ers looks on against the Los Angeles Lakers at Wells Fargo Center on December 7 2017 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania

Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid underwent a post-operative exam following successful surgery last Saturday to address an orbital bone fracture in his left eye, the team announced, and the results are encouraging.

Embiid, who in addition to suffering the orbital fracture, suffered a concussion after a head-on collision with teammate Markelle Fultz last week. The All-Star center has been cleared by an independent neurologist earlier this week, but must begin non-contact cardiovascular exertion steps in order to complete the NBA's concussion protocol.

Although the medical staff was "pleased" with the progress of the healing, there's no timetable for the big man's return.

yeah that was probably the most entertaining game of the year for me to watch.  Dallas up next which they should win their 14th in a row and 50th game this season.
