2) how was this not an issue when Obama, during his presidency, actively campaigning for Hillary/against Trump?

This is pretty scary. Gary Cohen was one of the few competent human beings who worked in the Oval Office. You can disagree with him on policy but he was a normal, functioning, rational human being. There are not many of them who work in the White House. Now he is leaving. And there are lots of reports that McMaster, one of the few other rational human beings there, is on his way out in the coming weeks or months.
I'm legit scared. Our country is run by incompetent boobs. Sooner or later a life or death crisis will come around....
