Out of the years I have the 08 boots sound the worst to me.

Its to distorted. The only way to lessen this I have found is to dick with my EQ and kill some bass. I have no idea why they are mixed this way. Thankfully I have already setup a preset for them so not all is lost but 06 was much better in my opinion. That said I will still get them all :)

Hopefully they realize the mix just is not right. Matt is loud as hell (fine) but Mike is too low.

Yes, very sad to hear that Columbia is still sounding bad. I won't buy.

But I still have faith for the rest of the boots !!

  • Sound bad???

I think that maybe some of you guys just expect too much.

I have all that are available so far and I love them.

Maybe you need to get some new speakers and learn how to tweak your EQ. I don't know... I can hear Mike just fine.

Good news. After listening a few songs, Columbia sounds much better than the first two.

Still not perfect but the guitars are present :)

    Thank you 10c

  • I'm listening to Columbia right now and I think it sounds fantastic! Sure, it sounds a little bit muddy in spots but it doesn't bother me. Some folks with deluxe systems may experience some issues with the bass. I'm not an audiophile - it sounds fine through my JBL computer speakers and subwoofer.

I should also mention that I was at this show and I'm just so thrilled to be re-living it that I'm not very focused on how the sound quality compares to other boots.

I havent heard any of the boots from this tour. But the 2000 and 05-06 sound great. Some are better than others but do you guys know how hard it is to record live? Its very hard so the fact you hear anything at all is blessing because someone knows what they are doing.

I thought 2000 & 2006 were great sounding boots. 2003 was too lively, too muddy, too in your face.

Will wait for my 2008 boots (ordered physical copies)

Went for : Tampa (bad choice it seems now)

I don't know... I can hear Mike just fine.

I only have Tampa, and just check for me, cordoroy, why go, severed hand -- songs 2-4, tell me you hear Mike? Tell me you can hear Mike's solo in Why Go esp. Marker he starts the song off and then disappears.

I gave it the car test this morning, and sitting in the driver's seat I should hear Mike overwhelming me on that side. Literally nuthin. So I skip ahead to Yellow Ledbetter -- ok, he was there, he was playing a guitar we can confirm from YL. And then as Stone comes in on acoustic, Boom in on organ, jeff/matt -- bye bye Mikey! ON YL!!!

I shouldn't HAVE to EQ this stuff -- I can't believe Mike would have signed off on this, wonder if the band actually does sign off on it? (Jeff, "Yep! That sounds awesome, what do you think, Matt?" Matt, "That's a wrap!")

Two theories: one, this is the dreaded iPod production mix phenom, engineer doing a mix-down then dumping to MP3 and listening on an iPod -- so extra bass and drums for those crappy lil' earbuds. Two, this was not a rock-n-roll producer/engineer, sounds like he/she's more used to Pop/Dance/Rap bass/drum thumpin'. (Third theory, the engineer's monitors are waaaay midrange crazy with no low end.)

But I'm more and more thinking they just didn't have a good source on Mike? At times (Black), sounds like Stone and/or Mike aren't direct from soundboards but rather some shotguns pointed at the PA!

Energy of the show is great, clarity overall of the recording is great, setlist and all that, wonderful show to listen to, but man, I'm crying over the Mike-lessness....

Can someone confirm if Tampa is the anomoly? Only one I got so far, might just get Roo and call it quits if all of 'em are this way. Well, and Ace!

I got Id - from Columbia is in my ears a this moment. And I love it. I think the sound is just great. It sounds "full" - it really does it for me.
Great show by the way, seems like the band is into it.
Looking forward to roo ´n Hartford.

So far I have WPB and Tampa. I have to agree that the boots from the U.S. 2000 tour is the best. Jeff is turned way up this tour and the piano during "Down" is overbearing. I'm not sure what company is handling the mixing since it was never discussed. I know for the 2000 shows it was Brett Elliason.

Also, anyone else annoyed with all the false starts, mix ups, during the shows? Some of the older shows were absolutely flawless. Here is to living in the past.

I think they should've had a fourth option for buying bootlegs which they would've made much more money off of due to the tiny amount of effort required on their part... individual parts available. Each song would have an mp3/FLAC for each instrument (and Eddie). It would take forever to download, but this way, everyone could have the ability to make exactly the mix they like. I would buy every show this tour if they did that. :)

  • Also, the first minute of Betterman is actually at the end of the W.M.A. track. I thought something was up when I saw that the track time for Betterman was 3:47. And I've only listened to four or five tracks so far.

Ok, now this is inexcusable. Granted, most everyone will be listening to the shows in order, but how does this happen??? I mean seriously?

I can somewhat overlook the crappy mix to some degree, but mistakes like this really look amateurish.

What's next? "Drop the Leaves" or "Steal, Lie, and Trust" listed on the tracklist?

I agree. For me, the sound quality of the Columbia boot is not a problem but the W.M.A./Betterman thing is a bit annoying. I'm sure I can fix it in Garageband.

I wouldn't let this stop anyone from downloading it because the show is fantastic.

LOL ... "Steal, Lie, and Trust?" ... That one was new to me. I do have Drop the Leaves, though.
    :)
  • what do you mean wma/betterman thing? does it repeat itself, like the i got shit/betterman from toronto 05? can you describe the issue?

Does the mix sound bad only on the mp3 downloads or do the FLACs sound bad as well? Just curious.
