After several listens, I am very satisfied with the Columbia boot.

At $0.36 per song, this is certainly the most affordable concert souvenir I've ever purchased.

It may not be perfect, but I certainly do appreciate it!

They're not the best bootlegs we've ever had (2006 are my favourite), but they're still great to listen to!

They've improved each time, with WPB/Tampa being the worst and Columbia/Virginia Beach sounding the best so far. Camden is now available but i haven't heard it yet.

Those complaining about Boom's piano on 'Down' are over-exaggerating waaaaaaaay too much. I happen to think it sounds awesome!

Last Exit in Tampa 2000 was from the soundboard and it sounded great.

but it didn't sound better than the rest of the album

I'm listening to Camden now, and whoever is mixing these has definitely improved imo. Corduroy in particular sounds great!

I've been happy with Columbia, Va. Beach, and Camden 1 (mp3 versions).

Hell, they're all better than when I had to scrounge around for those import bootleg dealios back in the mid 90s. They sound like they came off a cassette recorder in some dude's pocket.

This has probably been answered somewhere along the line, but do these boots come with a couple pictures from the show?

So another day of listening to Tampa -- yes, it's fine for the casual fan. If you're a Mike-head however, avoid Tampa -- he's nonexistant at least through Down, really the whole main set.

I'm beginning to think it actually was something to do with Mike -- he steps up later in the concert, and you can hear him a tad more from Do The Evolution on... He's more present in the Encores. A tad.

So either he himself had turned himself down and started to crank it up later -- and/or, when running through the mix, the mixdown engineer set Mike's levels by some of these later tracks like Life Wasted. I can't imagine they'd fuss with individual levels from song-to-song...

One song in particular, you can suddenly hear Mike just JUMP OUT like he's just discovered his volume pedal or knob wasn't cranked! That's when I went, "Oh! This might be Mike's fault...." (No I don't recall, was driving home last night when I heard it, but it was disc 2....)

And NO -- the freakin Tampa FLACs came with absolutely no artwork....

I'm listening to it for the first time right now and I couldn't agree more about Mike. The whole band seems a little off actually.

The intro to 'Alive' from WPB sounds like someone recorded it with a cell phone. I hope this improves for the Hartford boot.

They sounded great live - no problem at all hearing Mike.

For most of the boot it sounds like they were only using Matt's kit mics.

    Just terrible.

the American half of the 2000 tour still remains the gold standard in live Pearl Jam recording/mixing/releasing/pleasing

I disagree, I think the euro boots from 2000 were better. Matts snare was so high in the mix, i fuckin love it.

The Euro boots turned me from an admirer to a full on fan. Drums are great! But Stone & Jeff are pretty low in the mix. The US leg, some great sounding boots (Pittsburgh, Detroit) but some crappy sounding ones (West Palm Beach, Seattle 2)

2003 was awful, with possibly the exception of the Japan boots. No drums in the mix at all, Vedder turned up to high.

2006 was the best IMO. Everything balanced right.

2008 - I am wating for the CDs. Not feeling that hopeful

I think that the "What Stage" Bonnaroo is just absolutely amazing in terms to the quality of it's system. However, nothing against [is it Brett Eliason?] the sound dude, but I've come to realize, especially after seeing them there, that a PJ show just isn't ever going to be perfect sound-wise. Such a harsh thing to say, I know... it's as though it's complete an udder shite, but it always could use some work. I remember seeing them in Edmonton in '05, and while i believe that arena has a shitty-sounding system, I think that the drums were the only thing that came through well that night. At Bonnaroo, Jeff hardly came through at all, whereas when other bands would play that stage, you could feel the lower notes rattle every bone in your body. What happened to Jeff during Daughter? I could hardly hear his sweet grooves. He was louder for I think the second half of the show.

Bah, just suuuuuuuper sleepy and blathering away.

I'm hoping that this these boots, we hear less crowd. What's the deal with that thus far? I think that 2000 was especially crowd-heavy. But all in all, PJ boots still sound pretty decent I s'pose.

EDIT: Ahh fuck it, why was I even bitching. The whole PJ crew rocks. I think I was just real cranky that night.

i have an odd complaint, again about the crowd noise. listen to how loud it is in encore break 1 of Columbia. that's how loud it should be the whole show. but in an unprecedented fashion, they drop it back down when ISJ starts.

its hacky to raise and then lower the crowd noise. just keep it at one level, the loud one.

I just had a quick sampling of all the shows released so far, and as an audiophile, I have to say this...

Mike's guitar is no less "quiet" than the first few 2006 shows. If you look back you'll see I made the same complaint back then. He is nowhere near as prominent and ballsy as he was in 2000 or even 2003 to an extent. It's possible that Mike fucked around with his rig and ruined the sound, although it wouldn't hurt to bring him up in the mix a little.

The mastering isn't any hotter than usual, but there is some kind of problem with the bass overdriving and distorting. I don't think it's a mastering problem, but a problem with the recording/mix, because for the most part, the level of bass is fine.

It appears to me that Mike is almost in the center for the first two shows, then they move him left a bit more after that.

All in all, I think they sound pretty similar to 2006, except the drums sound a bit better.

I wonder if the people complaining bitterly have heard many 2006 shows? Especially the first few? Because these 08 boots don't sound much different.

I also wanted to mention that Ed sounds drunk as fuck at Camden 2, at least based on the song "Dissident". He's slurring words left and right, and sounds totally different than in WPB.

Agreed. In 2006 the crowd levels were much better on the recordings. In a song like Present Tense or Better Man, you need to hear the crowd properly.

Wow. Am I the only person that can hear almost nothing of Jeff from the Euro Boots and very little more from the US ones from this tour? I mean no bass at all. I was actually very pleased that I could finally hear what the bass was doing on the 03 Boots.
