when inconsiderate people smoked anywhere and everywhere making us non-smokers suck in their cancerous second hand smoke and made us smell like an ash tray ( come on you guys deserved that one )
when banks weren't open on weekends and no ATMs so you had to get all your money for the weekend by Friday
when Columbia House would send you 14 cassettes for a penny if you agreed to buy a 15th, then sent you one every month which you had to send back if you didn't want it

To our credit... at the time we had no idea that they were as dangerous As we now know them [cigarettes] to be.
Got 3 yrs not smoking, ( cigs at least.. still smoke pot) as of Feb. 22nd.
pjhawks, columbia house... got myself many cassettes through them.
you felt good & weren't as stiff as frankenstein with all the aches & pains.
the green rotary house phone hung on the kitchen wall with a short cord. it was kick ass the parents hooked up a phone & a rotary dial television in your bedroom... that was living.
... you had to read in a car to entertain yourself. ... you were left guessing at lyrics rather than being able to look it up
You also had to learn to read maps..( which they taught in school); there was no GPS. You as well, had to learn how to utilize reference materials to study; Google was a far fetched idea! But saddest of all.. I remember when it was important to learn proper grammar, punctuation, and communication skills. You were taught manners in the home, you sat around an actual table to eat meals; only the rich had televisions.
...you could actually print something? God knows I can't hand write for shit anymore. It's some sort of weird cursive-print bastardization that looks like it's straight from a serial killer.

And you had a giant Rand-McNally in your trunk at all times.

In Cali we had Thomas-Brothers guides.. same thing though.
You had to find a pay phone to check your messages and then actually call and speak to people.
You had to write a letter on actual paper and wait a week for it to be delivered.
Getting charged for toll and long distance calls (I remember a $1400 phone bill from March 1997).
These are painful memories... especially when you were paging 'your guy'.
Remember when you could have an actual interesting argument about something, rather than someone just saying "google it" in the first 20 seconds...ending heretofore interesting argument?
There were no dog poop bylaws and there was dog shit all over the fucking place and stepping in it was a fairly regular event (not all change is bad, lol!).
With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy. ~ Desiderata
