Like yeah, dont expect a halo of 3 feet in any direction. There will be a little contact. A bit crowded....
But is it a license for every bro who was out guzzling beer until 8PM to try to nudge up front in front of people who waited a long time in line?
Exactly why it's stupid to wait in line all day.

GA at usa is like making love and in SA and Europe like hardcore sex
And in Greece?
last time i checked map,Greece was still in Europe!!
"...Dimitri...He talks to me...'.."The Ghost of Greece..".
"..That's One Happy Fuckin Ghost.."
“..That came up on the Pillow Case...This is for the Greek, With Our Apologies.....”
Here's my solution for GA - works great for all things PJ.
"Hey, listen asshole, one more fucker throws a fuckin' quarter up here and we're outta here, I'm tellin' ya, FUCKER! What the fuck, you're blowin' it for fuckin' everybody. Hit me with a fuckin' quarter again and, fuck it, I'm outta here. We're all outta here. Fuck you, and if anyone sees someone throw fuckin' change right next to them, you have my permission to beat the fuckin' holy shit outta them."
If you want your personal space don't be in GA. That's silly.
in Europe or South America
I think anywhere. If you happen to be in a pit that's tame, cool for you i guess, but i don't feel like it's something that should be expected, that's all.
With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy. ~ Desiderata
I'm 47 yr old, a woman and still feel the need to keep it moving in the pit. I cannot help myself, either reserved or GA! I just cannot stand still, but rarely move from my foot spot.
Some of us feel strongly that the greatest compliment you can give a band is allowing their music to move us. We want the band to put on this rocking, electric engaging show and are inclined to recipacate with similar body movement and or vocal approval.

Wow. 47 feet!
I dont have an issue with people moving with the music and getting crazy. I do.
As tame as you all think everyone is, just wait til vedder comes into the crowd by you. 50 year old woman turn from sweet concert goers to Tasmanian devils. I really was a slight angle away from one of these ladies breaking my foot last night with the force they were stepping on and over me to get 4 inches closer to EV.
Interesting topic, my feeling is a GA ticket entitles you to entry to the building, beyond that it's down to following your own moral compass. Best way to be is look out for each other and remember how wonderfully rare this moment is...

SICK OF IT ALL are badass. That's a festival full of fucking meatheads. SOIA shows aren't really that crazy. Lots of mosh and such, but their crowd is also full of old folk now just like Pearl Jam. Personally, I have no problem with the occasional crowd surfer, and I love a good pogo. I'm happy to be able to be 10 feet from the stage now without being suffocated and kicked in the head by muddy doc martens.

Me too!!! I can't believe I used to go into pits like that with zero hesitation.
prob why I am so f'd up today.
I think the sickest pit I was ever in was either korn or ratm. I remember during the first song at rage my nose and lips were bleeding. I had a black eye and a doc marteen scraped the shit out of my legs
agree. I saw Korn/Helmet co-headline and all the skinheads were beating the shit out or the rap-rock kids.
then Rage at Lollapalloza 96 in New Orleans. I was in the first 3 rows for the Ramones and anticipating Soundgarden next. on comes RATM for a surprise set and all the ragin Cajuns and frat boys start killing each other. Took me at least 30 minutes to extract myself from that mess.
went and hung out at the 2nd stage and watched Soul Coughing play to about 30 people.

^^ I recall being at Lolla 93 with AIC and Primus headlining and the crowd surge when AIC played the opening bass line of 'Would?' made it clear that nobody had any say whatsoever in where they were going. 20,000 or so people in front, 10,000 or so people behind and everyone packed in like sardines just floating around. It was fun as shit but I don't want to be in such a position as an old man. After the closing set of Primus I remember how torn up I was. (All of the people jamming together started pogo-ing)
Those lineups were awesome! I got the shit beat out of me at the very first warped while quicksand was playing. I was literally covered in black and blues. Remember how nasty your snots were after shows?! Lol. Ah to be 18 again
For the most part, PJ pits have been soft (in the U.S.) since '96.
The '98 Tour had some good Pits. It was the last NA tour with GA floor (and some venues entirely GA). The Seattle II '98 pit was one of the most insane PJ pit's I've ever seen (The whole stadium was GA, not just the floor... that big of a GA event.. it creates pandamonium!). I actually backed out of it. The Missoula pit was perfect, but still had the raw energy and boatload of squishing up front.
I don't think we'll ever get oldschool pits for regular shows again. The pits are way t0o small and controlled. You need large masses of people to have access, because crazy pits stem from everyone wanting to be up front. If a whole venue is GA they are insane, if only the floor is GA, then it's a bit crazy. If the only a small section of the floor is GA that's not very condusive for pits.
Hope isn't nigh though. Festivals! One of my favourite shows over the past 10 years was Calgary in 2009. They played the old olympic grounds (they had a stage setup at the bottom of the old ski hill). There were no other good bands on the bill. It was basically indiefest, a hip hope artist and Pearl Jam. It was all GA. That pit was crazy. I didn't have the energy to stay in it but I enjoyed the hellout of the energy the crowd was exuding. It made me feel like it was the 90s again. PJ played a setlist with favoured older songs from their catalog. The pit was ferocious. The weather was perfect. It felt old school epic.
I guess i'm saying, if you want to experience PJ and an old school pit, try see them play a festival show where there's no seats. I bet Pemberton will have a helluva pit going on. If you go to an Arena show all the older fan club members have the best tickets. Go to a festival and all the younger folk get up front
You're not going to see big active pits when the pits are really small and only 10c members have access to them.
just to clarify... I am reminiscing nor wishing for it to come back. I should've been seriously injured in some of these including my first PJ show in NOLA 1995. hot as shit, poor security, very little water, and about 10/20k people. all GA tickets, on a high school football field. still don't know how I survived that one 5 rows dead center.

haha... or a roadie trying to hose down the crowd at one of those blazing hot summer festivals where you cooked alive in the pit.
I used to love that stuff, but I've pretty much stopped. I went to a NIN show in Vancouver (2005?) and the dick behind me was using his elbows to prop himself up behind me (We all know to use forarms, because forearms are flat and they don't hurt people!). I kept trying to crush his feet with my feet to make him shift away, but the he kept doing it. I had these horribly dark purple bruises on my back when I got him. Never had anything like that in a pit before. With the exception of an AIC show a few years later (when a friend older than me went into the pit, so I felt I had no choice but to follow) I've avoided going deep into pits. Not that many bands I see have pits anymore.
