Back then it seemed we all knew better as we were always personal with each other. We had no choice. There were no cell phones, no cameras, etc.

What about the issue I see in a lot of these African American videos where they sucker punch people, beat up old ladies, etc and people just film, watch , and 99% of the time dance around and yell worldstar....There are a lot of self absorbed punks out there or maybe they are just cowards...Seems like they enjoy it to me though.

The Knockout Game is a sweet game. Random people going to and fro work... getting drilled in the face and being filmed while getting drilled in the face.

I see shit like that and 12teen or 20... I want to beat the piss out of the punks participating. Absolutely freaking ridiculous.

Who shoves an old woman to the ground? What values have been instilled in you where you think its alright to shove a 66 year old woman to the ground while in a school no less?
I looked that kid that tried that on me straight in the eye and saw desperation, self loathing and total anger. Fucked up history, culture, parenting and system= fucked up kids.
I forgot about your involuntary participation in that game.

I do understand the process of neglect and how that tends to manifest itself. Some kids have no chance, but it doesn't make it any better for the victims when they express themselves as they do.

We can blame the parents, but in reality... they're products of their environment as well- just the fully ripened products.
Right again, Thirty. And yes, these guys are old enough to be held responsible for their actions. I would support community service time, challenging/hardcore counseling and heavy duty probation for these guys.

I would tell the kid that hit me that I'm guessing factors beyond his control helped make him the punk he is and I get that, but its his choice to either break the cycle and become the decent kid he could be or end up dead or screwed in a heavy duty prison.

This kind of thing won't stop until several things happen like...

Think of all people as human beings and as gimme said, not animals and savages. Maybe they are messed up human beings but the hatred keeps the cycle going. I hate it that that kid hit me, I get angry/sad/bummed when I think about it and at first I probably would have said I hate the kid but now... no, I don't think so. It does no good to hate him. I'm actually sad about that kid.

We could do with some big changes to many school districts. Less like training institution, more like helping kids move forward.

Be aware of prejudice. Why does the heading of the video mention race when nothing in the article mentioned it being a racially motivated situation? Yep, you got that right.

Educate young adults about having kids. Fewer screwed up kids would result. Support Family Planning.

After reading through this thread I believe you were the only person that drew offense to a woman being manhandled.

I'm shocked that more people don't have a problem with this.

It's an elderly woman. Who does that to the elderly?

I think the consensus is that it needn't be mentioned as you would be perverse to think otherwise.

I think the degree to which someone might take offence could be called to question.

When you speak to motivations, optically, it presents a mindset that sympathizes with the offender to some capacity.

I gotta be honest. this has been happening to teachers for decades. remember sally jessie raphael? in the 80's she constantly had kids and their shitty parents on her show, sending them to boot camp and showing them crying and whining because they abused their teachers, their parents, their classmates.

I'm not saying it's not a problem, it's just not a NEW problem. now it's just all on video, and for some reason, people seeing it with their own eyes is what is causing the uproar.

Exactly, Hugh. It really is an old problem.

I still get the impression the video was at least subconsciously intended to be racially biased.

Heres what I see specific to this case, at least 4 students had ready access to thier phones during class instruction time. How wasn't that addressed by administration before this?

    Because 'access' isn't a problem.

Using it while the teacher is instructing... or using it while they should be working on something else is.

You don't get your phone taken away unless it has become a distraction to the learning environment. Were you implying something else?

Access or no access, why are kids allowed take phones to class in the first place? I see no reason for it. If I were teaching again it would be strictly no phones.

Only that the temptation to use them during class is great enough to justify turning them in at the start of class as a means of marking student as present then returning at end of class.

    Its not unreasonable.

my daughter's school has banned Pokemon cards, as kids were getting distracted during class trying to trade, etc. surely there is a policy banning phones as well. not sure as we're not yet at that age.

My advice to teachers is- make school interesting and challenging (in the good sense of the word) in such a way that they will not miss their cell phones when you tell them they are not allowed in class. And lead by example. No teacher should have a cell phone in their classroom. It worked in the Human Services program for which I was program assistant. The instructor I worked with told the students none of us were not allowed to have cell phones in class- and these were college courses with students ranging in age from late teens to mid sixties. There is no need for phones in a class room.

  • Phones actually offer students a device that can assist learning- one being a personal device that can access internet. There are numerous apps that are school appropriate as well.

There's been a shift in the delivery of content material and how students can demonstrate meeting the learning objectives.

Well aware of laptops or tablets in the classroom. Have yet to hear about phones being the primary internet access device for schoolwork.

In fact, the sro removed her laptop from her desk before commanding her to get up then removing her violently from the desk.

You obviously haven't been in the public school system lately.

Nope. 30 yrs since I last set foot in a school. Doesnt matter though. This school seemed to allow laptops for learning. To the point of the teacher requesting the phone be put away . So it seems like phones aren't to be used for learning there.
