    AK-47, for the record.

Also, for the record, I think PJ_Soul forms her opinions in her brain.

Her brain is a good brain.

You don't need to know what an AK-47 is to understand the proliferation of guns problem that the US experiences. And attacking someone for their lack of experience with guns instead of the argument they present is telling me that the pro gun side needs to swing wherever they can.

I'll post this here, too, since it's taking place at the behest of Alison Parker's father and it seems like one thing that conscientious gun owners and anti-gun folks can agree on -- namely, that Congress needs to do its job and champion the will of the people (and not the NRA) in this country, nearly 90% of whom want some kind of reform when it comes to background checks (http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-fix/wp/2013/04/03/90-percent-of-americans-want-expanded-background-checks-on-guns-why-isnt-this-a-political-slam-dunk/) in order to decrease the number of these types of incidents.

For the link lazy, it's an online pledge to do something on Sept. 10 to help get Congress to listen to its constituents. You might need to make a call or two, or you might need to wear a silly T-shirt at some kind of rally at your State House. Whatever it takes.

    Information, man.

    Don't shoot the messenger.

Why are people always talking about AK-47s then? Whatever that is. I don't know about guns. Is that still semi-automatic? No one should be able to have one of those either, or anything like it. I also don't support people owning handguns, actually, but thinking those should be banned isn't realistic enough.

Yeah, I think the education you're talking about also would not help the gun culture problem. Better not to talk about it at all in schools IMO. Somehow, the US has to get guns out of American's brains. Adding gun education won't do that. On the contrary. Yes, yes, I understand the issue here.... you've got a gun problem, so you need to teach kids gun safety. Yes, it's a rock and a hard place. But seriously.... Americans are gun nuts, and it's way too in the forefront in your daily lives. Something needs to be done to stop that.

Hahahaha! Such strong opinions on stuff you have zero clue about. What's an ak47?? Hahahahahahaha

Seems to be the case around here most of the time.

I didn't realize that it is imperative that I had to remember whether or not an AK-47 is automatic or semi-automatic in order to have an opinion.
    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!
You just experienced what it's like to live outside of America, where the particular specs of military grade weapons aren't common knowledge. HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! image

Yeah, so civilians shouldn't have military grade weapons. I know, it's hilarious.

Hey, wait. Are you picking on me?!?! =)
So how on earth can you have such a strong opinion on something that you know nothing about? That s crazy.
What is it you're expecting me to know about? Whether an AK-47 is auto or semi-auto off the top of my head while writing a post? Why do you think I need to know that in particular when considering my opinions here? Are you and JAG trying to say that you have to be a gun nut to have an opinion about the gun problem in the US?
No I'm not saying you have to be a gun nut but I feel in order to have an intelligent discussion you should know a lot about the opposing view. In fact the more you know about the opposing view the stronger your argument becomes (at least that s what I've been teaching my students for the past 15+ years).

It seems like whether it is semi-auto or auto really has nothing to do with any part of the discussion. Single shot is most likely more accurate than fully auto....so what? A willing killer with a gun is the issue, not whether or not someone that realizes that our gun culture is insane knows whether or not a weapon is semi-auto or full auto. That's like arguing over a spelling error.

An AK-47 can be either "semi-auto or full auto" depending on the model. Also a "full auto" weapon, any full auto weapon, has strict laws for owning them. Just sayin'…

And just throwing this out there.

Death by auto in 2014 was 10.345 per 100,000 in the USA.
Death by auto in 2013 was 6.9 per 100,00 in Germany.

I think we both have a car problem...

not knowing whether a not a gun is automatic or semi-automatic is the same as saying that pearl jam is a country band. it's a pretty big difference knowing the difference between auto and semi-auto.
Are you serious? When did I say I didn't know the difference between auto and semi-auto?? How dumb do you really think I am? It is very clear that I said I wasn't sure at that moment if a particular gun was auto or semi-auto. Wtf. Gern was right. You are basically doing the equivalent of trying to shoot someone's opinions down because they spelled something wrong.

Can you point me in the direction of a fully automatic ak47 for sale? Something under $15000? And I m not talking downtown Mogadishu.
You and I both know that they are few and far between and it takes a hell of a lot to own one. It s not like they are sitting on the shelves of bass pro shops.

Doesn't it take like $40 and 30 minutes to make an ak 47 a fully automatic weapon?

    false:
The National Firearms Act (NFA '34) registry, wherein all full-auto weapons must be registered, was closed to new entries in 1986. The only way to acquire a full-auto anything is to buy an existing weapon (very very expensive. 15K and up) Since the supply is frozen and the demand continues to grow, the prices reach stratospheric heights.
The Feds take illegal full-auto conversions very seriously. If you get caught doing this you are going to jail for a very long time.

    Yes sir.

I did want to show people the difference though. There is a HUGE difference between the two.

So back now to the opinions!

Strange then that so many people on these and other forums have strong opinions on a variety of topics despite lacking any real expertise in most of them. You don't have to be an expert on firearms to understand the risks associated with them. Moreover, it seems that a simple handgun is deadly enough in the wrong hands. Why do I need to be an expert on specific firearms to feel that they are all fundamentally dangerous?

I can say when it comes to guns, I am glad I don't live in the United States. Even the discussions on gun rights are unsettling.
