No I'm not saying you have to be a gun nut but I feel in order to have an intelligent discussion you should know a lot about the opposing view. In fact the more you know about the opposing view the stronger your argument becomes (at least that s what I've been teaching my students for the past 15+ years).

Strange then that so many people on these and other forums have strong opinions on a variety of topics despite lacking any real expertise in most of them. You don't have to be an expert on firearms to understand the risks associated with them. Moreover, it seems that a simple handgun is deadly enough in the wrong hands. Why do I need to be an expert on specific firearms to feel that they are all fundamentally dangerous?

I can say when it comes to guns, I am glad I don't live in the United States. Even the discussions on gun rights are unsettling.

you are glad you don't live in the us because of guns? i vacationed in arizona last year where people can legally open carry and it's no big deal. Just got back from the florida keys last week (florida has very very lax gun laws) and again, no problem. saw pearl jam in st. louis last year (very close to ferguson, mo) and again, no worries. to me the majority of the problems happen in the inner city. just like anywhere else in the world you know where to go and where to avoid.

and i agree with you, it is strange people have such strong opinions on here (and everywhere) without fully understanding or grasping the other side. it's amazing when I teach the hot topic "issues" in class, kids at first think they are one side. but then when you give them the objective facts many switch sides because they didn't know anything about the other side.

I'm asking for an honest opinion here, but why do you think our gun culture is insane without experiencing what it's actually like or being around: hunting, going to the range, shooting skeet, entering a competition...etc.? (or maybe you have)
What do you see that points to our gun culture being insane? Is it the news? School shootings? I can only base my opinion on my personal experience but when ever I participate in any sort of shooting event, safety is the number 1 idea stressed throughout.
Again, looking for an honest answer and 100% not being a dick lol. Just looking for some insight from the opposing view.
and I have zero problems with background checks and registration; we already do these measures here in NJ plus a hell of a lot more.

That's not what I said and you know it. I said when it comes to guns I would rather not live in the US. There are many aspects of American society which are fantastic. I don't feel that your love of guns is one of them.

The US has a very unique culture when it comes to firearms and its not one that I'm comfortable with. I don't feel afraid when I travel to the US, nor do I think I'm in any measurable danger if that's what you're trying to get at. I'm not even opposed to Americans defending their right to bear arms as I'm sure the overwhelming majority of gun owners are responsible and law abiding. I simply don't embrace that aspect of your culture and would rather avoid dealing with it on a semi-regular basis.

Even NRA members (when polled) believe that more restrictions need to be enacted.

Certainly not where I have been (i imagine there is a larger gun presence in some places, and not in others.
I love the US, and can think of a lot of reasons why I would like to live there (in some places, anyway).... what might keep me from moving there is the general gun culture, not the guns themselves. But really it would be the Healthcare system, war mentality of the government, and the racism problem!

I am not converting anything. I know 2 people who have converted semi auto weapons to fully auto. One was an ak47. I do not remember what the other one was.

My uncle and cousin, who converted the ak47, said that it wasn't a difficult process at all. My only question was why do it? Their response was "because we could."

I am not converting anything. I know 2 people who have converted semi auto weapons to fully auto. One was an ak47. I do not remember what the other one was.
