just wondering as I was at my 2nd job last night and one of my coworkers was super upset that Obamz used the word "thug"....and the TVee peoples on CNN were debating it...so, what gives...?

thug was used in 70's(and before that) to discribe truble makers and never was used bassed on color, black kids started using the term on t shirts, rap music etc. so now I have to be careful not to use the word thug in mixed company ?...so as not to offend the group that gave rebirth to the term "thug" .....bullshit !rgambs said:

I'm sure everyone knows how I feel about it, given all the past threads. Nothing wrong with the word, it's how you use it and in what context. Sort of similar to the way we use "gay". Words evolve and over time the use of them changes. I almost never here it used to describe white males, almost always young black males.0

I agree with dignin that thug isn't necessarily a racist word, and it depends on context. I personally use the word regularly, and more often than not to describe white guys, because the thugs I generally see are white. Thuggee or Thug has been around since the 1300s and they were an Indian cult of robbers and murderers. It is a word that has a lot of history. It is only recently that the hip hop, gangsta crowd co-opted it for themselves. If they want to be known as thugs, that's fine with me, but they don't get to dictate how I use it. I'm waiting for someone to provide evidence of major news sources calling white criminals thugs.
We have had threads on this very board in which white people were making trouble and thug never came up.
I am not disputing that these kids are thugs, but when a word is only used for a particular race, it is being used in a racist way.
