thug was used in 70's(and before that) to discribe truble makers and never was used bassed on color, black kids started using the term on t shirts, rap music etc. so now I have to be careful not to use the word thug in mixed company ?...so as not to offend the group that gave rebirth to the term "thug" .....bullshit !

I'm sure everyone knows how I feel about it, given all the past threads. Nothing wrong with the word, it's how you use it and in what context. Sort of similar to the way we use "gay". Words evolve and over time the use of them changes. I almost never here it used to describe white males, almost always young black males.

I agree with dignin that thug isn't necessarily a racist word, and it depends on context. I personally use the word regularly, and more often than not to describe white guys, because the thugs I generally see are white. Thuggee or Thug has been around since the 1300s and they were an Indian cult of robbers and murderers. It is a word that has a lot of history. It is only recently that the hip hop, gangsta crowd co-opted it for themselves. If they want to be known as thugs, that's fine with me, but they don't get to dictate how I use it. And neither do sensitive, liberal whites who automatically assume it is a racist term. It isn't. It can be when used that way, but the word itself isn't racist.

Nevermind, don't want to derail the thread.
I will just say there isn't a difference and any difference could be negated by using another comparison...such as the attacks on tje Sikh temples and Synagogues which weren't terrorist acts.
The point is that this selective use of words is racism.

This is actually the context I used the word "thug" most while growing up. Hooligans and thugs to me were the skinheads. They were white guys. I NEVER thought of blacks as thugs. I know times change, and words change, and meanings change, so I get that. But I'll keep using the word thug based on actions, not skin color. If someone doesn't like it, that's on them.

I also don't want to derail the thread but I do want to agree and expand here. Absolutely, James Holmes' crime and the Fort Hood shooting have a quite a but in common. So too with the Marathon bombings. No one calls Holmes a terrorist in part because of skin color and faith, but also because we as a society give the Tsarnaevs and Nidal Hasan too much credit. We take them at their word that they did the things they did because of jihad, because of U.S. occupation, etc. It feeds into our ongoing arguments about religion and U.S. foreign policy and the middle east and on and on. Holmes didn't write a spiffy note in a boat, or claim to be a "Soldier of Allah", so we (correctly) regard him as the piece of shit mass murderer that he is.

As for the thread topic, I think the backlash against the term "thug" does reek a bit of PC-ism. One more word that you can't say because it offensive somehow to someone somewhere. The group I've used the term most often to describe is hockey thugs like Ulf fucking Samuelsson.
