Figured I would start a thread to talk USMNT and the MLS.....

I went to my first MLS game this past Saturday. Although it's in a brutal location, the Chicago Fire have a pretty nice stadium. It was a really good time and the Fire actually won. I'd still much rather watch the EPL or other European leagues over MLS, but MLS is growing on me a little bit. Just sucks that the MLS is on a completely different schedule than the rest of the world.

Never been to a game, but have walked by where Toronto plays on game day and the place is always packed and noisy and loud. But Toronto's team seems to always suck lol

Sounders fan here! Hopefully this thread will get some traction.

Toronto has a nice stadium and great support. It sucks for the fans that they've never made the playoffs. It looks like they've tried to address that by signing a couple of big names in the last couple of years, so we'll see.

I'm a Sounders season ticket holder, and have been since the a-league and USL days. I sit 2nd row behind the players' bench, and love the atmosphere at games. Everyone standing, chanting, yelling. It's a blast. Sounders have done well to make the playoffs every year, but we just can't seem to get to the big game. Hopefully this is our year.

Yeah, hopefully we can get some good MLS and USMNT talk going here. U.S. has not looked good at all since the World Cup. Hopefully they get their shit together for the Gold Cup and win it this summer so they qualify for the Confederations Cup in 2017.

That's awesome that you have 2nd row seats. You Sounders fans are crazy! I love watching any Sounders home games that are on TV because the atmosphere there is so awesome.

What do you think is causing the USMNT issues? Lack of cohesion due to different players being called up? Players playing out of their normal (club) positions? Overtaining/injuries at camp? Formation? Lack of motivation? I'm concerned as well, and hope it gets straightened out soon! Gold Cup isn't too far off and we've clearly got some work to do.

I definitely think lack of cohesion has something to do with it. The rosters for all of these sets of friendlies have been very different for each one. But when you look at the number of goals they've given up in the 2nd half compared to the 1st half, it is really bad no matter who is out there. I'm a huge fan of Jurgen, but it is definitely concerning going into the Gold Cup. This friendly with Mexico coming up should be a good indicator of where we're at...

Midfielder from ny team got called up for this, which I suppose means he ain't gonna be playing against Philly on Thursday, which makes me sad.

Yeah, that's the blessing and curse of having national team players on your club roster. You have the benefit of having a world class player, or up and coming world class player adding value to your club, but that player will often get called up to the national team just when they're needed most - especially toward the end of the season during the playoff race. It is frustrating. I know at one point we had 5 guys gone for international duty and of course those 5 were starters. At least we aren't in a World Cup year this year, so absences should be shorter and more infrequent than last year.

U.S.-Mexico tomorrow night. Being in San Antonio, I assume this will be far from a home game. No Jozy and no Dempsey. Hopefully no more last minute collapses...
  • jeffbrjeffbr Seattle Posts: 7,177
I'm looking forward to the game, but know it will probably be filled with plenty of green shirts, being in TX. Normally I don't put a lot of weight into friendlies, especially with the way Jurgen has been using subs and getting new guys some exposure. But this is against Mexico! While technically a friendly, it should never be played like one. Unfortunately with Jozy and Clint both out (arguably 2 of our 3 or 4 best players), I'm worried that we are not going to be able to field the quality side I'd like to see against Mexico. I just hope the newer/younger players understand the opportunity they've been given, and work their asses off. There really is no excuse for fading at the end of the game. These guys should be in shape and motivated. The big issue is the short prep time they've had. Looking for another Dos a Cero game for the USMNT!

Doesn't sound like Mexico will have their top squad here either. But like you said, this is still US vs. Mexico. Dos a cero sure would be nice!

Love the dos a cero result as well! And was also happy to see Morris get his first cap and his first goal. He's just 20 yrs old, a Sounders Academy alum, and still playing in college. He's got a bright pro future ahead, although I think at some point the college soccer will hold back his development.

Haha, good question. He wants to finish up his Stanford education. Once that is done he wants to play for the Sounders. They offered him a homegrown contract this year, but he turned it down to head back to school. I'm sure he'll benefit from his education, but I also think you have to take advantage of opportunities when they arise. Stanford will always be there, but his youth, speed, health, and an offer to play professionally might not always be there.

Yeah, it's hard to fault someone for wanting to finish college. But being talented enough to be called up to the national team and not be playing professionally is kinda crazy.
