    There is no such thing as a set culture. This argument you're making sounds very much like something somebody might have said to justify segregation in the 1950s or slavery in the 1800s. The US like every other nation is constantly changing, sometimes for the better and sometimes for the worse.

    You may not tolerate that immigrants have the right to hold beliefs that are different than your own however it won't stop those individuals from migrating to the USA and leaving their mark on your society. People have doing it for centuries.

    Look, if I was not tolerant I would be blowing things up....... :fp:

    I would never move to a country if I did not agree with there culture....
    Example......I have been to the beautiful country of Italy, Naples to be exact. I was not a tourist I went with a friend that has family there. I loved it there. If it was not for the way the men treated the women (there wives) I would have loved to live there..They treat women very mannerly but when you become a wife the story changes.......I would not move there and expect the people to change to my liking.

    Should everyone in America become a racist, bigot, and hatemonger? Would you be happy then?

    Thanks for getting to this for me, Byrnzie. You never addressed the last portion of her statement which, at a very minimum, deserves some form of response. I guess because she had responded to my post... I'll do it. Sheesh.

    Aerial, I might be confused (so forgive me if I'm wrong), but I'm pretty sure you are one of the God-fearing types on this forum. If so... why would you accept gluttony- a sin- as a freedom or right? God doesn't approve of people stuffing their faces and sitting on their asses. He probably doesn't approve of people picking and choosing from the appropriate Christian behaviours as if they were options at a buffet table either.

    I have been there.....I lived with them.....I visited many family members and socialized outside of the family.....
    I was around Italians for ten years and I DO know their culture.

    So.. you've been to Napoli once on holiday? 'Lived' with a friend's relatives for... how many days/weeks? You 'know' their culture through some perceived 'observations' you had with the friend's male relatives? Or maybe discussions? Do a couple of said friend's male relatives/outside the family make the 'Italian culture'? Then I ask (or rather ponder)... do these friend's relatives then see you as representative of american culture and how american women are/treat people?

    I have never understood this line of thinking. why should anyone acclimate to the culture they find themselves in? as far as I'm concerned, if they get let into the country through legal means, you can do whatever the fuck you want. YOU ARE NEVER OBLIGATED TO LEARN THE NATIVE LANGUAGE. I get so tired of hearing fellow Canadians yell "learn some fucking English" after speaking to someone who doesn't speak it very well. it's maddening.

    they come there because of many reasons. poor living conditions where they are, poor ecomony, corrupt government and police, oppression, etc. just because they want to go to the US doesn't mean they need to become aerial.

    People who move to the US (or most likely any country) don't necessarily assimilate into the larger culture BUT THEIR CHILDREN DO. The US has had a history of so many groups immigrating to the US that it seems as if these new immigrants are not joining in when in reality most adults would never fully integrate into the larger culture of any new country they moved to, not just immigrating to the US. It is too difficult to do as an adult. The US has a history of hating and wanting to remove certain immigrant groups because they are different than the groups that have already assimilated but eventually these groups are accepted and many of their traditions become part of the larger American mosaic. I think we'll see acceptance of Muslims as they become more integrated and native born Americans become used to the 'differentness' of these groups.

    And I think AMerica has a unique culture but it may not be what some think of. I think we transmit alot of our culture to other parts of the world through media outlets like TV and movies and music, for better or worse.
    Are we getting something out of this all-encompassing trip?

    Seems my preconceptions are what should have been burned...

    Nope, very often you are saying how great your country is, at the expense of another, all I ever try to point out is that these freedoms you hold to be virtious are not exclusive to the US.

    Many countries offer the same freedoms America has, however some of you seem to refuse the very notion and close your mind off to the idea that the USA is not the exceptional experiement that the army recruiter says it is.

    I judge you and others by the beliefs that you communicate, such as having a mistrust of those claiming to be of the Muslim faith. That is why I call you a bigot, pretty simple really. And you can choose to aling yourself with similar ignorant thinkers, that does not make you right, just means you're not alone.

    No one is trying to change your mind, just open up your perspective a little, I actually think it is very sad you hold such predjudice at your age, and yes I do realise how patronising that must be.

    big difference between criticizing a country's GOVERNMENT and saying you distrust an entire group of PEOPLE and "want them sent back to where they came from".

    Has anyone here, besides you, ever done the latter?

    What's kind of lost in all of this is the fact that Godfather and Aerial are two of the biggest critics of their own government.

    Earlier, Brian had offered a couple of items 'typifying' US culture. I contributed mentioning sports (in particular, baseball) were great things about the US. None of the cultural characteristics were offered in negative fashion such as we don't eat dog. These types of comments are naturally going to elicit counter comments.

    As for a blatant racist to come out and call his critics snakes points to the sheer fanaticism of his ideals. Most people, having been completely destroyed on a message board after presenting something outrageous, eat a piece of humble pie and seek reconciliation. They don't continue with their plodding manner which ultimately serves to make them look foolish.
